12 and/or 15 for the ask game?
hi!! society has evolved past the need for quads entirely. if ilia ratifies a quint at some point in the next couple years i'm gonna start wondering if the wild isu plan to cut out jumps entirely from one half of the competition is a good idea maybe
the only other sports i will be watching are probably some of the skiing and snowboarding and maybe women's hockey
for the succulent ask: agave, crown of thorns and aeonium
agave: what’s your favorite time of the day?
that one actually kind of depends on the time of the year. I like dusk when it falls after eight pm (and it’s minimally buggy, but let’s not be too picky here). but in the winter it’s just too early and that’s depressing, so I’d probably pick dawn instead.
(do I often get up in time to enjoy dawn? no, you can pry me from my blankets over my dead body. but waking up just before dawn without having to get up, and being able to softly and sleepily enjoy the world waking up? that’s a nice one.)
crown of thorns: are you more of a cozy rainy day or a warm sunny day?
both! and it’s totally mood-dependent; there are definitely sunny days when I long for rain, and vice-versa.
aeonium: what is your favorite tea and how do you take it?
my favorite category of teas can be summed up as “tea that tastes kinda burnt;” I love things like lapsang souchong and hojicha. I suppose you COULD add something to them, but it would be kinda weird for me to imagine drinking them any way but black.
1, 3, 4, 13 and 20?
Thank you for asking!1. What’s your major/field?I have 3 degrees in chemistry/biochemistry, so I suppose technically, that’s my field. I’ve been doing gut microbiome work for the past four years, so that might also qualify. I’ve almost entirely switched over to computation. So, really, IDK?3. What’s your favorite thing to do in the lab?Again, keep in mind that I’m a computational person at this point, but I really enjoy helping people plan experiments. This is partially because its the only stage where everything goes correctly, and I can lay it all out in my head. Plus, its a really good place to make sure that things actually go according to plan, because we have a plan.4. What’s the most interesting lab story?Oh God. I hope the statute of limitations has run out. So, I worked on a large citizen science project. I wont name which one, because Im attempting to keep my public and tumblr life separate, and if you can name the project, you can probably figure out who I am pretty quickly. But, like, suffice to say large microbiome project. And, my colleague D the ancient and I went to Boston for this “field work” event where we got to interact with a bunch of awesome citizen scientists and collect samples. After some interesting jokes, like, “We hope the coffee this morning has moved you to donate your sample. If so, please drop it off with Pigeon in the lobby”, we had about two dozen or so fecal samples that needed to be returned home. We were doing a shipping experiment, so we divided them in half and were going to ship a bunch on dry ice. I, as mentioned previously, have a chemistry background. I’ve worked in wet labs before, and handled things like a -80C freezer and samples on liquid nitrogen. I’ve had a few cold burns, because, well... they happen. D the ancient is a computer scientist. Like, he’s amazing at computers and can explain a phylogenetic tree until you generate a new species, but hes never handled dry ice before. We get dry ice from our friendly collaborators in the Cambridge triangle, and pack our samples on dry ice. There are a few challenges. First, I cannot carry the cooler of dry ice we have been gifted. Second, we do not have adequate PPE. Third, we’re rushing to get he samples packed and ready to go before the truck leaves. So, I pack the cooler while D negotiates with the FedEx people. He gets them to agree that they can ship the dry ice. The truck driver - in what is probably one of the shadiest dry ice shipping related moves of all time - handed us some stickers, and told us to label them are 2.5kg of dry ice. (Again, note, this weighted way more than 2.5 kg. I can lift 2.5kg, even an awkward, bulky 2.5kg). I sealed up the package really well to make sure that we didnt lose any heat. And, we shipped it off.Luckily, no airplanes fell out of the sky and we got our samples in two business days. They actually arrived back at the lab before we did.The next year, I got the dubious honor of carrying the samples home in a cooler. It turns out TSA agents are way less impressed with dry ice than FedEx drivers.13. Favorite female scientists? I am a huge fan of Rosalind Franklin. I just... I super admire her work. I think Jennifer Gardy does some amazing stuff with TB. (Not famous, but badass) and Jessica Metcalf’s ancient DNA work is pretty awesome. I also admire Maud Menton, although her equation was the bane of my teaching experience. And, Jennifer Duda isnt getting enough credit.20. Whats the most “evil scientist” thing you can think of?Oh god, in my field or someone else’s? We played this game once at happy hour. Then, it became a very unhappy hour. Just assume that my ethics board would super not approve because it involves human experimentation in a controlled environment for long periods of time.
