Hello Tumblr! 

During the winter of 2013, I wanted to create something to put on the walls of my and my soon-to-be-roommate's new house. As women who grew up in the 90s and, thus, avid Disney lovers, I decided it would be fun to make something to represent our favorite Disney movies (Aladdin and Pocahontas for me, Brave and Frozen for her). The only problem? I wasn't very good with drawing or painting, and I had a hard time with characters' faces. The solution? Using scrapbooking paper I had found, I began to create the landscapes from those movies by cutting out and gluing little bits of paper. Over the next few years, I began to give PaperScapes to friends and family as gifts, expanding from just Disney movies to other fandoms (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Marvel, etc) as well. When I saw the interest people started showing in them, I decided to open a shop so that I could share this niche art form I had found with everyone. I create each PaperScape by hand using cardstock, scissors, and glue. Each PaperScape takes anywhere from 13 to 22 hours to make, from deciding upon a color scheme, creating the background, building the main feature of the PaperScape, and adding detail work such as stars/shadows/windows/textures in grass. When I was young, I always enjoyed pretending I lived in another world, a magical place from a story I was reading or my favorite movies. And now, I suppose this is my way of keeping that magic alive.

I found an interesting article about a Ford Cortina driving down a Skeleton Run during an Olympic Games. From this fun fact we created an alternative poster about the Ford Cortina. We built a skeleton run entirely out of paper and placed 2D paper cars piling up at the bottom.

A sublime chart of 870,000 scientific studies.

Paperscape shows each scientific paper as a circle, with the size of each determined by how many others cite it.

Users can toggle the heat map, which colors each study according to its age. ArXiv began in 1991.

A cluster around the topic dark energy shows that it spans multiple fields, including quantum cosmology, quantum physics, and condensed matter.

The study of the universe is a universe itself. An infographic designed by two physicists maps the hundreds of thousands of studies in  arXiv, an open repository for physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, finance, and statistics papers that is maintained by Cornell University. The category of a paper’s research determines the color of its circle, and the more cited the paper is, the bigger its circle. Each marker is placed according to the number of references it takes to get from it to each other paper. Accordingly, papers are clustered around topics, such as extrasolar planets, dwarf stars, and superconductivity. Some multicolored clusters show where disciplines intersect around topics like neutrinos, dark matter, dark energy, and networks.
