children of the wild ones | Roxanne&Riley
It was finally here. The night of the full moon had arrived, perhaps a bit more quickly than most would have liked. Although Riley had been trying her best to keep her cool and pretend that she was completely composed, her stomach was a knot of nerves. It didn't make any sense; she wasn't even one of the unfortunate souls who had to turn tonight. Even so, she was able to at least empathize. The idea of the werewolf curse being passed down in their genes was terrifying to her. There were times that she lay awake at night, so crippled with fear at the very idea of triggering the curse. But like Cassie had told her many times over the past week, she had no control over what happened.
So instead of focusing on her fears for her own life, Riley had taken to worrying about Roxy. Generally, that was Roxanne's job; she was the older sister, the mother figure. She fretted over Riley more than she probably should have, and there were times that Riley complained about that. But now that she was the one worrying, she understood why Roxanne acted the way she did. It was just to protect her.
Riley wished that she could protect Roxanne. As they walked towards Derek's house, Riley sent a few furtive glances in her sister's direction, checking to see that she was still holding up alright. "So how secure is this place?" she asked finally, breaking the silence. Sometimes she wished she could read her sister's mind just to find out what she was thinking. Riley was convinced that Roxy kept most of her thoughts to herself, seeing it as some strange form of being strong and protecting her from the bad things in the world. "Like is it so strong that not even a band of hungry ogres could break in?" She smiled slightly, hoping that her sister wouldn't see through her feeble attempt at diffusing the tension in the air.
