Till Death Do Us Part | Tobaria (Email Para)
This was it. This was the day.
Her fingers trembled lightly as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. She had never done something so impulsively like this. Everything was done within a few days. Procurement of a dress, shoes, bouquet, a church.... Aria's teal eyes looked at her own reflection in the mirror, scrutinising every detail one last time - her simple diamond earrings Toby bought for her yesterday, the simple lace over the sheer fabric of her dress, the beading and finally... the engagement ring she had donned for a month. She was getting married. And it felt surreal.
They had decided to have it small and private -- away from London, away from anything familiar. No one was invited. Only the priest and a few witnesses -- Maxine's temporary Icelander nanny, their last-minute wedding planner who has been running around to find and coordinate everything. Toby knew their family would object to this very idea and really, who the hell cares. This day wasn't about them -- people who didn't wish them well. This day was for him and Aria. His heart was drumming against his ribcage as he straightened his jacket and vest.
"Are you ready, Mr Hawkins?" asked the priest gently. His kind brown eyes seemed to assured Toby that everything will be taken care of.
"I am, whenever the bride is," he replied. His voice could not mask his nervousness.
"Aria?" called out Nora, the wedding planner. "We need to be by the door now." She urged the bride nearer before taking Aria by the hand. She felt the bride's cold trembling hands and hoped that the warmth from her own palm would make her feel safe. Aria walked with Nora silently. Her sheer veil was already down, covering her face. She could no longer hear anything except for her own heart beating in her ears.
"Are you ready?" Nora whispered, fussing over Aria one last time before handing her a bouquet of red roses. Aria could only nod. Nora stared at Aria before going forward to open the double doors of the church. She stood aside, smiling gently as tears brimmed in her eyes. Every single time she witnessed a wedding, she tears up. It doesn't matter she has been a wedding planner for years now. Aria took a nervous step forward as the organ music resonated through the church walls. She was afraid to admit it but this was something she had always dreamed of. She wished her father was here by her side walking her down the aisle but the fact that he didn't walk Alice either, erased all hope. She finally reached the altar with her heat pounding -- threatening to burst through her chest. She brought her eyes slowly to Toby's bright blue ones and gave him a small smile.
Seeing her walk down the long red aisle caused him to stopped breathing. His heart skipped a beat as he watched Aria approach him. Even through the veil, he could make out her beautiful face that he had memorised so well. He held out a hand to which she met with. Flicking his attention briefly to the priest whom nodded, Toby lifted Aria's veil gently. A smile spread across his lips before mouthing "You're beautiful." His eyes never left hers.
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, in the sight of god, to join together Ariaella McKinnon and Tobias Hawkins in holy matrimony; which is an honourable estate, instituted of god, since the first man and the first woman walked on the earth. Therefore it is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently and soberly. Into this Holy Estate, these two persons present come now to be joined." The priest looked at both of them with his gentle eyes before nodding. "Your vows please."
Her breath caught in her throat as her fingers gripped tightly onto Toby's. "Toby," she started, breathy, Aria took a deep gulp of air before continuing, "When I was growing up, things didn't make sense to me. I didn't have a normal set of parents, my home was.... a living hell. I was the kid no one cared about -- until I met you." Moisture had already glistened over her teal hues. "We've known each other for so long, we've been parted for so long too. The day I had to leave you behind, the day I had selfishly thought you wouldn't accept me for who I really am, broke me. It killed a piece of me and I knew that if I were to ever see you again, I will never let you go. You're so.. kind and gentle. Generous and sweet. You deserve someone so much better yet you chose me. And let me tell you, I am beyond ecstatic. I love you. I have loved you since the day you gave me a piece of pie behind that laundry shop. I have never stopped loving you and I never will. I love you with every fibre of my being, Tobias Christopher Hawkins. And it looks like you're stuck with me till the end if you say 'I do' at the end of all this," Aria chuckled nervously. "You are my sun, my stars. My moon even. I wouldn't be smiling like I am now, Toby. And you are the very reason. I love you, it's not complicated nor is it incomprehensible. It's simple. I love you and I can't wait to start a life with you." Tears were already on her cheeks with her lips pursed slightly as she wiped them away. Ella had strangle gone quiet in her head. Aria expected her to interject but she was calm, perhaps the bitch had accepted the fate.
"Tobias?" prompted the priest. Toby had been too caught up with her declaration to even think about his own vows. He swallowed before letting go one of her hands to reach into his pocket and extracted a piece of paper. "As you can see," he teased lightly, "I didn't have it memorised." Toby grinned widely before he started.
"Aria, when I first saw you on the rooftop of my house, reading a Harry Potter book, being away from the party downstairs, the first thing that came into my mind was how intriguing you were. I wasn't the easiest person for you to understand. All those mischief in school, all those random outbursts I had.... you stood by me even though you could have walked away. When you did walk away from me, leaving me hanging, I thought I would never see you again. But here we are. Because when I saw you again in London 7 years later, reading a book no less, I knew, I have never stopped loving you either. People said we were children back then and we have no clue what... love is. But I knew... and it was you. After all that we have been through recently... After everything, I can never see my life without you in it. You believed in me even when I made grave mistakes. You gave me chances I never thought I deserved. You deserve me and I deserve you. I love you. Nothing will ever change that." He could finally exhale and relax as he put the piece of paper away. His hand returned to holding hers. This was where he belonged. He belonged with her.
“Ariaella–," the priest prompted, "will you have this man to be your husband; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love him, comfort him, honour and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to him as long as you both shall live?”
There was a beat of silence.
Without a shadow of a doubt, Aria knew she would do everything the priest had asked and perhaps beyond. She spoke firmly, confidently, "I do."
“Tobias–," the priest prompted, "will you have this woman to be your wife; to live together in the covenant of marriage? Will you love her, comfort her, honour and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all others, be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?”
"Then with the power invested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife."
They both broke into giddy grins as the few people present in the church applauded enthusiastically. Even Maxine let out a cheerful gurgle.
The bride and groom shuffled slightly to take their partner's before slipping their respective rings onto their fingers. 'I love you,' they mouthed to one another.
"You may kiss the bride."
