Malibu Nights || Grant x Stef
It was funny how things always turned out the opposite of what you expected. Never in a million years did Stefani think this was going to happen to her; cancer. Cancer was something most people talked about and raised awareness for but yet, nobody ever thought it would happen to them. She was in the same boat as everyone else. From touring around the world and performing in front of sold out audiences, to making public appearances for events in between the shows, there was rarely even any time for the pop star to think none the less worry about her own health. To her, it was completely normal to feel fatigued after performing show after show. Throwing up after shows were normal. Having headaches were normal. Depression and anxiety was also of the norm in her life and there was absolutely no reason to suspect any different. Not until things started change; periods of time where she would just blank out completely and have no idea what she was doing or where she was which she would later find out was actually a seizure. The confusion was not normal. The drastic mood swings were not normal. Her balance being off was definitely not normal, coming from the woman who could walk in twelve inch heels without a problem.
Being the stubborn person that she was, Stefani tried to play off those symptoms. Half the time she attempted to hide them with success; either that or people knew not to question her. Could you blame them? There was no way in hell she was going to check herself into the hospital voluntarily to see what was going on beneath the surface. She was too damn busy with the tour and with less than ten shows left, she couldn't let a trip to the hospital get in her way. This was the woman who had to be tricked into thinking she was going to the zoo when a pole hit her in the head and gave her a concussion in order to even get an MRI. If people thought she was going to go there on her own free will, then they were the crazy ones. She had made a promise to her parents to go get checked out as soon as the tour was over and once the artRave finally came to an end she had to hold up her end of the bargain as much as she didn't want to.
It was nothing, they said. They just wanted to run some tests to be cautious, they said. Everything would be fine, they said. What other reason did she have to doubt them? They were the ones with medical degrees. They were the ones who were supposed to make her better and tell her that everything was fine in the place; but apparently everything was not okay. They could have at least prepared her better for this! Telling her that she was going to be fine as if the doctors taking care of her just didn't want someone like her upset with them. God, how could they not at least given her a warning that something like this might have happened? Coming out from an MRI only to be waiting in the hallway, since she was too stubborn to actually be admitted to a room, was not the way someone was supposed to find out that they had a brain tumor. Cancer. If they didn't want her to freak out completely like that and break down in the middle of the hospital, then they should at least have given her a warning. That was only fair.
Even through her melt down out in the middle of the hospital, her mind couldn't help but turn to all the things that she had missed out on because of her career. While most of her friends had settled down and got married, even have a few children, there she was without anyone even by her side when she found out the news of having cancer. How pathetic was that? This only fueled her melt down as she sat there on the bench surrounded by her guards who at that point didn't know exactly what to do or how to comfort her, and took any excuse for someone else to comfort her at that point and that person just so happened to be her parents Grant Anderson; an old family friend that just so happened to work at the same hospital. And for that, Stefani was grateful. Grateful that she had someone to be there at her side at the hospital while going through such a horrible thing, but also grateful that he was able to look past who she actually was. He didn't see Lady Gaga. He saw Stefani Germanotta; the woman who just needed a friend through a tough battle ahead.
Low and behold as the weeks went on, Stefani found herself under his care only when she began to experience weakness and loss of feeling in her knees. Her parents had hired him behind her back to come and stay with her just to make sure that things were okay from day to day and she had fought them about the situation at first, being the stubborn person that she was refusing that she even needed help, but she eventually gave in. He wasn’t going to spill any secrets or information to the media. She had met him a few times in the past, he was a family friend, and he was the one who was there with her when she found out about the situation. Stefani could trust him even if she didn’t know him all that well. For treatments, however, Stefani had gone back from New York to Malibu where she there was going to be plenty of room for the two of them to live together; although she wasn’t that used to the idea as she walked out to greet him in a see-through gown with nothing on underneath. She wasn’t ashamed. Hell, she wasn’t even supposed to be standing without anyone near her just in case she was to fall — a rule that she was already breaking. Grant was going to have his work cut out for him.
“My eyes are up here.” Stefani commented in a teasing tone as she leaned against the door way, half expecting him to already lecture her about standing if her parents had already talked to him, “Come on. I have a feeling you’re going to like it here, but... just don’t get lost, okay?” She laughed nervously, staring at the doctor in front of her, “It’s good to see you again, Grant. Really. I wish I could say it was under better circumstances, but. At least you get to stay in a place that has it’s own arcade and bowling alley. Right? And spend time with me of course, that’s even better than any of that shit.”
