Gifs with solid backgrounds tutorial
1. Extend the size of the work area to the top :
2. Select the color at the very top of your image :
3. Use that color to create a solid background, you will place that layer at the very bottom of your layer column :
4. Add a basic coloring, try to lighten the background color (with selective color for example) :
5. Add your black and white coloring. [green framing; I have the habit to use a solid red layer with “color burn” as blending mode, it allows me to tone down the gif or make it a colored gif if I want to] :
Tips: You can use selective color and boost the “black” in the black section to darken the characters :
1. Extend the size of the work area to the top and add a solid black layer at the very bottom of your layer column :
2. Add your basic coloring and your b&w coloring; tips: use selective color and boost the “black” in the black section (it will help you erase some of the background details that you don’t want) :
3. To erase the remaining details of the background, I usually use selective color and boost the “black” in the black section (the same tool as in step 2.) except that I concentrate it on certain areas not on the whole gif. You can also use the pen brush and use black to erase small background details that are not in contact with the characters :
It goes without saying that it’s very complicated to achieve this kind of gifs if the background is too detailed and if the characters are cut at the top.
