How We Operate || Mark and Derek

At first he’d been avoiding Mark as he tried to figure out a way to tackle this tumor. And then, as it does in life, shit hit the fan. Joy, Allie, Clay and Chris...things had happened one after the other. But now, with the reality of what had happened to Chris and Clay, he had a renewed sense of fight, a belief that they could do this. He couldn’t be mad at Mark for leaving if Mark was gone. Bright and early the Monday after the funeral, he heads into the hospital and then heads to Mark’s room. “Rise and shine,” He announces, knowing that the nurses had just left from a vitals check anyways.

Matters of the Heart || Mark and Lena

The consult request came in the form of an email, Dr. Shepherd requesting that she assess a patient that was here for treatment of a heinously sized spinal cord astrocytoma. The moment she opened the attached scans and saw it, Lena’s eyes almost popped out of her head. Heinously sized was the understatement of the year, that was for damn sure--it was so big, she snapped a picture of it with her phone and sent it to Clay in a text message with the wide eyed emoji before she went on looking at everything. It takes her a moment to get to the name of the patient. Mark Sloan. She’d heard whispers of his reputation here, and his reputation as a doctor was huge--she’d read several of his papers before, and they’d met very briefly once or twice on the conference circuit. 

After thoroughly going over his information, including the most recent workups, she heads down to his room on the neuro floor, knocking on the door frame and stepping in. “Dr. Sloan,” She says, finding him sitting in a chair instead of the hospital bed. “Lena Larson, Head of Cardio,” She introduces, holding her hand out.

What Comes Next? || Mark and Allie

He’s asleep when she arrives at the hospital. Not surprising, it’s early, well before rounds, but she wanted to get here early to talk to him. Hearing it from Meredith and Evan, that Mark was back, that Mark was sick, was a a lot different than seeing it, though. He’s asleep, and her plan to start yelling dissipates. Instead, she goes and drops her stuff off in her office, stops to get coffee and get her tablet, and then she goes back. He’s still asleep, and so she sits down on the chair in the corner of his room and starts going through her charts for the day, balancing the tablet on her belly.

Strangers || Derek, Lexie, & Mark

He’d spent the past week pouring over these scans and the info, holed up with Lexie (and Hill and Amelia when they could), trying to make a plan, and a backup plan, and a backup plan for the backup plan. Today, they finally got to meet the patient. “Hey,” Derek says, finding Lexie in the lab where they’d taken up residence. “Lorna called, he’s here. Conference room four. You ready?” He asks, interested to see the man behind the giant tumor he’d been looking at for a week.

A Guy Walks into a Bar || Mark and Lena

It had been a twelve hour day with four emergency surgeries and two scheduled procedures that had culminated in three lost patients and one in the ICU. It had been a crappy day. It had been the kind of day that called for a trip to the bar before going home, because drinking alone in her suite just wasn’t going to cut it. She’s nursing her whiskey, watching some interns play darts with their fresh faces that hadn’t been marred by the crappy side to this job, elbow resting against the bar and head resting against her hand, hair falling over her shoulder. She hears the door open again behind her, another wave of people from the hospital, and sighs, draining the last of her drink in one sip.

Hit by a Hurricane || Mark and Derek

The news that Meredith had preeclampsia was a bit (ok, a lot) of a blow, for the both of them. He could tell Meredith was struggling with the news, as was he. It meant danger, even if Allie kept on top of it. It meant possible complications. The world was feeling heavy after that on top of his sister showing up. He’d neglected to mention everything going on with Amelia to Meredith. While she’d invited for her to stay there, and while she knew some of her past, Derek just couldn’t get into it all now. He wanted to forget about it, not go into details about his sister’s life. But all the same, he needed to talk to someone, and the person here, besides his mom, that knew about it already was Mark. Having agreed to meet at Joe’s, Derek headed over there, Meredith already aware he was meeting up with him. Arriving at the bar, he sits down at the counter to wait.

Collateral Damage || Mark and Derek

Kicked out of the hospital again by Richard, the chief telling him to go home to his kids, Derek sighs, turning onto the road up to the land. Meredith was home, he knew that from the minimal communication they had: mostly one to five word text messages. Always about the kids. And he knew he could still go home, still be with the kids, be in his house, their house, part of him couldn't. It would be easier for her, not having to see him, blame him. Part of him had to think that hating him hurt her, and he didn't want to hurt her anymore. So he'd stay away, until Meredith was at work. Then he'd go home, for the first time in three days. But three days was better than the weeks he'd been pulling before. He was trying for the girls. He was. He pulls off the road, onto the grass and into the woods, through to the clearing where the trailer was. There, waiting for him. Derek parks the car and gets out, uses the keys to get inside, and looks around. He can almost see Olivia and Abby sitting on the floor, playing, and he has to squeeze his eyes shut, wipe a tear away. In the back room, he falls onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling, willing dreamless sleep to come but knowing it wouldn't.

Regret || Mark and Derek

After he'd brought Zola upstairs, he'd come down to find Meredith gone. And that was when the regret started. What if it had backfired? what if he lost her? If it was what she wanted, then he'd let her go, but he'd never move on, that he knew. At a loss, he texts Mark, and once he gets word that he'll be here, he waits.
