Name: Paranthodon africanus
Name Meaning: Near Anthodon
First Described: 1929
Described By: Nopcsa
Classification: Dinosauria, Ornithischia, Genasauria, Thyreophora, Eurypoda, Stegosauria, Stegosauridae
Paranthodon is a poorly known Stegosaur from the Kirkwood Formation of South Africa. It lived about 145.5 to 136.4 million years ago, in the Berriasian to Valanginian ages of the Early Cretaceous, making it one of the later surviving Stegosaurs. It was also fairly small, about 5 meters long, with an elongated snout. There was little to no overhang of the teeth row, unlike in Ankylosaurs, indicating a difference in diet between the two groups of Thyreophorans (which may point to why the Stegosaurs eventually went extinct). Given it’s limited remains, it is uncertain where it is placed within Stegosaurs; but Stegosauridae is the most recent bet. It lived alongside a few other dinosaurs, such as Nqwebasaurus, Algoasaurus, and some unnamed animals.
