You: I know we agreed no contact but I just couldn't resist, she looks too much like you right now.-GL
[image of a curly, red headed three month old girl]
You: Right, well, I did expect radio silence. Just wanted you to see her, for whatever reason. I hope you're well, Mycroft, I really do. Afternoon.-GL
Stranger: Mr Holmes is quite fine and passes on his regards. - A
You: His regards, yeah? Any reason he couldn't pass them on himself?-GL
Stranger: He asked me to send a suitable response. - A
You: Anthea, stop fighting his battles for him. Is he really alright?-GL
Stranger: Yes he's really alright and I am just doing my job, which includes answering his calls. - A
You: The calls he doesn't want to, I remember.-GL
Did he see the picture I sent?-GL
Stranger: I told him there was a picture, he asked not to see it. - A
You: Oh, right, of course. I shouldn't have expected him to actually see it.-GL
Will you tell him I'm sorry?-GL
Stranger: For sending it? - A
You: Yeah, I broke the rules because I was human enough to miss him. That's why I'm talking to you and not him.-GL
He told you, didn't he?-GL
Stranger: I am not party to all of the agreements between you bu I am aware that you both agreed to no contact. - A
You: It's because of Anna, because I got pregnant and he wasn't interested in a family. He allowed me to keep her, if I agreed not to contact him.-GL
Stranger: I don't imagine he 'allowed you' anything as it wasn't his decision. And I am also aware that roughly 20% of his salary is being paid into a fund for Anna. - A
You: He had a say, you know that.-GL
And I haven't touched the money in that account. I told him we didn't need it.-GL
Stranger: Whether you touch it or not it is there and it will transfer into her ownership when she turns 20. - A
Stranger: And he may have had a say but the decision was yours. - A
Stranger: Regardless, that is not my business. I will let him know you are fine. - A
You: Don't bother, Anthea, he doesn't want to hear about us.-GL
Thank you for taking care of him and for speaking with me.-GL
Stranger: You're welcome. - A
You: [ A few months later] AKHDKHSlkajfalkfs.-GL
Sorry, Anna had my phone.-GL
You: The least you could do, Anthea, would be to respond.-GL
Stranger: I'm sorry, I didn't realise it needed one. - A
You: I would have figured at this point one of us would have deleted the other's number.-GL
Stranger: Perhaps you should install kids mode on your phone and while he may have deleted your number that doesn't stop you dialling his. - A
You: She grabbed it from the table, she's been trying to pull herself up. Kids mode doesn't work that way, Anthea.-GL
Stranger: Kids mode prevents accidental dialling from the contact list. I use it on mine when I am with the children. - A
You: Right. I'll install it later.-GL
[Delayed] Is Mycroft there? I'd like to speak with him.-GL
Stranger: What is your call in regards to? - A
You: I just want to talk to him.-GL
Stranger: [delayed] He will call you when he is free. - A
You: Thank you. God, thank you, Anthea.-GL
Stranger: [three hours later] "How can I help you Gregory?"
You: "Don't need help. I just..I wanted to talk. Is that a crime nowadays?"
Stranger: "No but I am very busy ad it is the middle of the day"
You: "You could have waited, you know, I didn't want to interrupt your day."
Stranger: "You asked me to call, I assume it is important or you wouldn't have."
You: "I told Anthea I wanted to talk to you because I missed...I was tired of talking to her."
Stranger: Mycroft sighed audibly. "Gregory I have a lot to do. If you want a chat with someone may I suggest you contact one of your friends or parents group or something. I have kept your number unblocked so that you can contact m in case of emergencies, but this is clearly not an emergency."
You: Greg nearly snorted into the phone. "Right.." he began. "Because if there was ever an emergency, you'd come running back, right? You don't have to feed me those lines anymore. I could be nearly dying in a room somewhere and you'd barely lift a finger to do anything, not to mention if it involved Anna..." he grumbled angrily into his mobile. "Consider this the last of it. I'll have your number deleted and the bloody kids mode turned on, tell Anthea not to worry."
Stranger: "Fine" Mycroft said frostily. "I will do that."
You: Greg didn't respond. He didn't much trust his voice or the words that would follow if he continued. He sighed and took the phone from his ear, pressing the button to end the call. He looked up to see Anna holding herself up at the coffee table before he pressed delete on Mycroft's contact and snapped a picture. "Oh, love, you're growing up too fast for me."
Stranger: Mycroft slid the phone onto the desk crossly and returned to his work. He was annoyed that Greg was so hostile when he'd stuck to their agreement perfectly. He'd never wanted children which Gregory had known from the very beginning of their relationship. And when it had ended he had obliging arranged a three month trip overseas to give the other man the space and time he needed to move out, even setting Anthea to find a suitable flat and arrange the financing. He was perfectly prepared to uphold his legal obligations towards the child, making sure Gregory was financially comfortable and not disadvantaged by the birth. And he was also perfectly prepared to be contacted in an emergency, however he wasn't going to go chasing conflict so if greg wanted to be so hostile he was welcome to it.
You: A few days later, John entered Mycroft's office and nearly setted himself into the chair across from the politician, Sherlock coming in after him.. "I know what the agreement was. I know what the conditions were. I know that /you/ have the will power and the coldness to stay a world away from him.." he began, holding up a hand when he took a breath, he was not going to be interrupted. "He does not know we're here. He didn't send us. We came because he's too stubborn after your fight to tell you..." Sherlock, standing beside John interrupted. "He's broken. You've broken my detective and you need to fix it. /Now/, Mycroft. He's not giving me proper cases. He's turning down John's invitations to 'go out', for god sake."
Stranger: Mycroft snorted, not even stopping in his writing, only glancing up to frown at his brother. "I haven't broken anyone. He made the decisions he made and it's not up to me to unmake them... And given he's still on parental leave as far as I am aware it's no wonder he's not giving you work Sherlock. You'll just have to make do with the other detectives... Or come and work for me." He plastered a false smile on his face that didn't reach his eyes as he looked up.
You: "I would rather swim through the times in the dead of winter than to work for you, Brother dear." He said, moving to sit in the other chair. John spoke again. "He took nearly four months of leave, yes. He's been back for two. Anna's six months old, Mycroft, don't tell me you've not been keeping tabs on them. He told me about the money, your still being 'available for emergencies'. Just before he told me you were upset because he interrupted your day." Sherlock grumbled under his breath. "Of course Gregory interrupted his day. Mycroft has no interest in the sentimental nature of their situation. Greg's gone soft after the birth, longs for a family, like all proper Omegas."
Stranger: "No one would ever accuse you of being a proper omega" Mycroft retorted, "we had an agreement, which I am sticking to and he is not. It's that simple." He glared at the two of them. "And I am not his social secretary. If he is not going drinking with you that is nothing to do with me."
You: "Difference is.."John said with a bite. "Is that I wouldn't run away from Sherlock the moment he told me he was pregnant. He's not traditional by any means, but neither is Greg, which we all know is exactly the reason you two were together. You were both stubborn, hard headed and strong willed and you could put up with this bullshit of the jobs you both have." John leaned forward in his chair. "He didn't do this to trap you, Mycroft, it was an accident, a happy accident. It would hardly kill you to be involved in their lives, no matter your thoughts on family." he stood. "And you never know, you may actually enjoy yourself for once." he moved to the door, Sherlock not following him. "He's depressed, an ape could see it from this far away. Fix him." the detective barked before standing and following John out of the door.
Stranger: Mycroft glared after them. It was easy for John to say he would never abandon Sherlock in that way but the matter was hardly likely to come up, and neither of them had any idea how difficult it actually was to stay away from Gregory. He didn't want children, wasn't parental, hated chaos and mess and disorder with a passion and yes... might possibly be afflicted with OCD although he was never going to admit that to his brat of a brother. He'd been quite upset when Greg had told him he was pregnant, and quite... distraught when the omega had chosen the child over him. But he'd borne it, and did his best not to tease himself watching them. He had no desire to alter the status quo. He worked for another two hours before he gave up and picked up his phone with some misgiving, sending a brief text.
I am told you are... distressed. Would you like to have a coffee with me to discuss. - MH
You: Distressed? No, I'm not. I've been at home most of the day. Unless you count Sherlock barging into my office this morning demanding I find him a body.-GL
And I don't have any one to watch Anna to be able to meet with you. Though it does surprise me you're offering. Who's been talking to you?-LG
Stranger: Sherlock likewise barged into my office to complain with Doctor Watson in tow. - MH
You: Ah, right, he threatened to do that.-GL
Sherlock's upset I don't have cases he wants to take. John's upset we don't go out anymore. They'll get over it, I'm sure. Things have changed for all of us. Just ignore them.-GL
Stranger: Fine. They suggested you were 'depressed'. - MH
You: That's what John keeps telling me.-GL
Stranger: Does he have reason to diagnose that? - MH
You: Do you really care for the answer?-GL
Stranger: I wouldn't ask otherwise. - MH
You: [delayed] I haven't been feeling myself lately, no. I think it's just the stress or my hormones. I'm sorry they bothered you with it.-GL
Stranger: Perhaps you should see someone about it. - MH
You: I have. I hadn't stopped crying for nearly a week when I finally went.-GL
You: And the doctor said it's normal, especially in Omegas who don't have Alphas. I meet with a therapist once a week, my hours are reduced so that I can still work and be with Anna. I'm trying to stay away from medication while she's so young because I'm still feeding her.-GL
Stranger: Well that all sounds perfectly reasonable. Is there anything else you can do? - MH
You: Find an Alpha that doesn't mind raising another's child, perhaps? But I'm not interested, really.-GL
Stranger: Mycroft growled at the idea of Greg with another alpha but he stifled it. Gregory wasn't his after all... He considered his response and decided on diplomatic.
I'm sure there are alphas who would be interested. - MH
You: Says the man who has none.-GL
Stranger: You know how I feel about children. - MH
You: And chaos and sentiment.-GL
I do, Mycroft, that's why I never argued when you told me you didn't want her.-GL
Stranger: And you chose her. - MH
You: [delayed] I made an appointment, right after you and I had that fight. I thought I could go through with it because I didn't want to have to lose you and it really hadn't sunk in that I was carrying a human.-GL
Stranger: (still typing?)
You: [delayed] I made an appointment, right after you and I had that fight. I thought I could go through with it because I didn't want to have to lose you and it really hadn't sunk in that I was carrying a human.-GL
Stranger: But you couldn't. - MH
You: No. I saw the scan and heard her heartbeat and I couldn't go through with it. I knew as soon as I walked out of the doctor's office exactly what it meant. That's why I never came home. I couldn't..I didn't think I could handle having to look you in the eye after that. It hurt to much just to think about it.-GL
Stranger: I see... I did wonder. - MH
Well, regardless. We both made our choices and have to live with them. - MH
You: I know. That's why I did as promised and deleted your number and have restrained myself from feeding into my want to begged you back.-GL
Now, if I could only reign in Sherlock and John, you're life would go back to normal completely.-GL
Stranger: (I think some of that was missing, could you re-send?)
You: I know. That's why I did as promised and deleted your number and have restrained myself from feeding into my want to beg you back.-GL
Now, if I could only reign in Sherlock and John, you're life would go back to normal completely.-GL
Stranger: My life was normal when you were in it. - MH
Stranger: Mycroft regretted sending it almost as soon as it was sent.
You: You don't have to humor me. I wrecked all sorts of havoc on you, remember? I'd leave my underwear on the floor, wet towels at the bath. I'd cook for you but make a mess in the kitchen.-GL
Stranger: And I cleaned it. - MH
You: Wasn't your responsibility.-GL
You: Just like this isn't. I'm sorry John tried to worry you with it.-GL
Stranger: Your mess became quite predictable. I got used to it, and to an extent the child is in part my responsibility also, hence the trust. - MH
You: I was predictable, terribly so.-GL
The trust was very generous of you, Mycroft, but I don't expect you to be responsible for her, no matter what you think you have to do. You're not obligated to help anymore. You did so much before she was born.-GL
Stranger: In law I am obligated to help her until she is an adult and I have to objection to it. It is all I /can/ do for her. - MH
You: If I had wanted to force your hand, I would have gone through the law.-GL
You can do anything for her, you can do nothing for her. It hardly changes how I feel about you, Mycroft.-GL
