I also went to the Bois de Vincennes park today and explored the restored medieval castle there. The Bois de Vincennes park was once a royal hunting ground with a lodge that was built by Louis VII in the 12th century. Then after the Revolution, the army decided to use the area as a training ground and the castle became prison. Some of the famous prisoners included Marquis de Sade and the philosopher Denis Diderot. In the 19th century Napoleon III made the park part of his urban renewal scheme, unfortunately the chateau was destroyed in 1944 by the retreating German army but it has since been restored and is magnificent!
