Any tips on getting a job at 16? I have no idea where to really start.
Restaurants, cafes, retail stores, those are going to be your best bet. If you don’t have any work experience for your resume, list volunteer experience, school-related activities, if you’re in AP/honors classes or received any certifications/awards. And PLEASE, get a professional-sounding email to list at the top. Do not put “[email protected]” or something.
When you submit an application, come dressed nicely (nothing too fancy, but a nice pair of pants and a blazer/cardigan) and ask to speak to the hiring manager. Introduce yourself and give them your application. Be friendly, ask about the position. Show interest.
YOU call THEM the next day. Don’t wait to hear back. I cannot stress this enough. Show initiative, show that YOU want the job. Call and check every day if you have to. Don’t worry about being a pest. If they’re actively hiring, then you calling them is already saving them a ton of time.
If you get called back for an interview, dress accordingly and prepare a list of questions to ask the hiring manager (they will ask if you have questions at the end, they always do). What’s the typical day-to-day like? What sort of qualities do the management staff consider most important in employees? How many people will you be working with at a time? There’s a lot of other questions and good interview tips to be found online. :)
Most importantly, be confident and don’t get disheartened. You WILL be rejected. Just keep that in mind. Everyone in the world has been rejected for a job.
Finding a job is now your current job, so treat it as such.
