Edie Faulkner Wootton: Silver Award - Unit 2 Part C - Effective Arts Leadership (Reflections 1,2,3)

Reflection 1

Date: 17th of august

Notes:  Today I measured everyone's sizes for different costumes and props in preparation of film week which is next week on the 26th of august. This means that I organized the clothes that we had to create different outfits for the characters and I made a list of the props and costumes that we didn't have and worked out whether we would be able to make them or if we would have to buy them instead. I also made a list that detailed all the props and costumes that we would need, where we would be getting them from and what scene it was for. this helped me to be more organized about what I needed to get and what we already had. I think that I have developed my speaking skills while talking to other people as I had to be very clear when asking questions. 

I also did research into period costumes and fashion in different time eras so that all costumes and makeup would be historically accurate to the time setting. for example, I looked online at different hairstyles and makeup that was used in the 1970s so that it would look more like the time period. However we had no resources for the future scene so we used stereotypical clothes that are associated with the future such as light coloured clothes and futuristic makeup and hairstyles.

Reflection 2

Date: 26th of august

Notes: 

Today was the first day of filming meaning that I had to make sure that everyone had brought in all the props and costumes that they said they would for that day and organize all the props and costumes into different scenes so that it would be clear for the actors to know what they needed for that scene. I also needed to make sure that all the props were safe and undamaged by the end of the day so that people could take home the props that they brought in that day and were not needed again. I found it hard to keep track of what things belonged to who, and making sure that nothing got lost. I think that I have improved my organizational skills. 

I also needed to make sure that everyone that the right clothes for the right scene, for example, everyone had to be wearing stylized outfits inspired by 1900s outfits in the 1900s scene which would help to show the time era. for example, for the suffragettes, we had sashes that were green, purple and white as they are the colors that suffragettes wore. They also wore long dresses and hats, to match the fashion that was popular at the time. the extras also wore time appropriate outfits such as the man who wore a suit which also matched the time era.

Reflection 3

Date: 30.07.21

Notes: Today was the last day of filming meaning that I needed to make sure that everything was in the right place and that everyone had returned the costumes and props that they had borrowed and that anyone who had brought anything in got their belongings back. However I also needed to make more props for the final scenes of the film; for example I needed to make badges and cut them out for people to wear. A magazine cover also needed to be made for one scene. I realised that using the scissors could also be a safety hazard so I made sure to take care while using them and to not walk around while using them. today we were mostly filming the scene which took place in the future which meant that I needed to make sure that everyone had light coloured, unbranded clothes such as plain grey and white clothes so that the scene had a more futuristic atmosphere. It also meant that the main character would stick out more as she is wearing her normal clothes which would contrast with the rest of the cast.

Edie Faulkner Wootton: Silver Award Unit 1 Part C - Arts Event Review

Where did you go? What did you see/do? When did you go?

On Wednesday 14th of July I went to an exhibition at the strand by Ryoji Ikedi . in this exhibition the artist used different light and reflections to create extreme patterns which partnered with interesting sounds and music. 

One part of the exhibition was a darkroom with small pedestals in a line in the centre. There was a screen on these pedestals that had different sequences of patterns of numbers which almost looked like repeated barcodes. There was one part in the sequence where thousands of dots blinked on the screen but when you looked closer you could see more clearly that they were lots of numbers rapidly repeating across the screen.

There was also another part of the exhibition where there were 3 massive screens that were also paired with music that used different pitches to create a relaxed atmosphere even though the different pitches together felt almost uncomfortable. On the screens there were different displays such as space and the different planets there as well as different parts of the body and what they looked like. There was even a part that showed how an MRI test works and comparing different ones to each other

I think my favorite part of the exhibition was at the beginning. It was a long hallway that was surrounded by blinding light which made it hard to look around you. It reminded me of films where the blinding light symbolises death. Paired with high pitched music which was almost too high pitched to hear, it felt very cinematic walking through the hallway.

Describe what art forms were involved.

Both sound and visual art forms were used in the exhibition. For example the artist used different pitches and noises that made the audience feel almost uncomfortable at how low and high the pitches could be. He also used patterns repeating patterns that only used monotone colours and centered around lines and the patterns they created.

Have you seen or done something like this before?

I don't think it is like any exhibition I have seen before so it was very interesting to see new ways that light could be used to create different shapes and designs. However, the exhibition reminded me of using projections to create different sequences of patterns. I liked the way that the lights and sound were paired together to create an immersive experience to the audience.

Was there anything unexpected about what you saw?

There was one part of the exhibition that felt unexpected. It was a lack screen that had a blinding white circle in the middle. I thought it was unexpected because the longer that you looked at it, the more patterns were created. I was not expecting the patterns when I was looking at this piece which is why I liked it.

What did you think was good, and why?

I think that the piece that used 3 screens was good because you could see the detail more in depth as different parts of the piece could be seen on the different screens.

Was there anything about the art event that you didn't enjoy and why?

I think that maybe i didn't enjoy the part of the art event where there were large speakers that emitted different pitches so that when you walked near them it meant you could hear the difference in the pitches. However I felt it was a bit overwhelming because all the different sounds overlapped meaning I found it hard to be able to concentrate on each sound.

What have you learned from this arts event?

I think I have learned more about shapes and patterns and the way that light and sound can complement each other to help create the patterns interesting to an audience. I think that I will be able to bring these skills that I have learned about into other projects that I'm doing.

What thoughts or ideas will you take away with you?

I think that I will take away the ideas about light and the effects that they can have on your audience. For example, the way that extremely bright lights can contrast well with dark backgrounds can help to put an emphasis on the sounds that the audience is hearing.

My Arts Inspiration is:

Phillip Reeve the Author of the books: mortal engines; predator’s gold and infernal devices (these are all the ones that I know of).

Why they Inspire me:

He inspires me because his writing is very expressive, and he has been given lots of awards for his books. He uses a lot of techniques like show not tell or cliff hangers and vivid verbs and his books and writing are unique. They also have all these very good plots e.g., mortal engines are where this girl called Hester has an uncomfortable past and meets this bot called Tom that lives in London, but London and all the other cities have turned into a city with wheels, traction cities they call it in the book. So, these two 17-year-old teens are having adventures and fighting these traction city wars. And they also made a movie about it. And all the other books that he wrote are great and have their own plot like Predator’s gold is still based on the girl Hester, an 18 yar old girl, that is now in Predator’s gold. All the books are different. Like how the mortal engines series is set 3,00 years in the future.

What they make and do and how (why not include an example of their work):

He is the author of the books: mortal engines; infernal devices and predator’s gold and other books that are not part of the real story but with the same characters and the same world. He does mostly Science fiction. He uses a lot of techniques when describing the appearance of someone or something and he likes to describe the smells or looks and tastes from his experience or if he ate the food before. To describe, he uses words like: bitter; sweet; uncomfortable taste.

What do others think about their work?: Well, a lot of people adore his books and think he is a great Author and he has been given countless awards for most sold book of the year and things. He is pretty famous but not so famous that people in school talk about him but he is still a very good author.

What I like about their work:

What I like about their work is that he uses all these great techniques e.g.: show not tell; cliff hangers. But also, the way when he is trying to change the scene from one place to another is very cool because he uses words e.g., meanwhile. I also like that he spends a lot of time describing the scene. Like when someone punches, he does not say he punched him, he describes the gesture e.g. “he threw his up to the warm skin of his face, making a red mark knocking him down on the ground”  

What I have found out about their career / technique:

Phillip Reeve has been given the Guardian Children’s book prize. He is the Author of the best-selling, award winning first book of the mortal engine’s series. Philip Reeve published his first mortal engines book in the 6th November of 2001. He was born on the 28th February 1966 and is still alive making more of his good books. His books are normally science fiction. He speaks English and started from 2001 and is still making books.

Reflection 2: Launching our logo

Date: 04/08/21

Notes: I developed the leadership qualities set out in my plan by taking a risk on launching our logo. I took the initiative, as I decided when to post this and how to post it. I decided to post our logo as an image on Instagram as well as changing our profile picture, as that would make it look more like a launch rather than just a random event and would hopefully attract more attention to it. I decided to do this in the middle of editing week rather than what one would normally expect (Friday, the last day) as I wanted to have a new logo before we were completely done and because people would probably be busy on Friday and Saturday and so not see our new logo on Instagram for a couple days. 

Thus, I developed my leadership qualities by showing a greater understanding of how to gain online viewers and how to market our product (the film) to them. A leadership opportunity I wasn’t expecting was trying to make this appear like an exciting event, as previous profile pictures I had just changed without making a post. I did this differently, as it was our final logo rather than a stock image of a goat (our name is GoatPictures). 

I did have to amend my project plan, as I had not originally thought of launching this new image logo as part of an event, but when the time came, it felt like the right thing to do. In terms of health and safety issues, it was making sure this image wasn’t copyrighted or offensive.

Julian Silver Award: Unit 1 Part C Arts Event Review

Ryoji Ikeda Exhibition In central London - 16th July

What event did you attend?

I went to 180 the Strand to Ryoji Ikeda light and sound exhibition which is the largest exhibition of the artist’s work ever staged, Ryoji Ikeda is a visual artist who makes sound and light installations. 

What did you see/do?

In this exhibition there is millions of code shown on the monitors in the first section followed by a walkway of blinding light as you enter the mysterious complex sound waves which is was made at very high frequency, to the verge of human hearing.

The second section was a room with a light focusing on a black hole whilst releasing this abstract sound wave which led to the laser that showed an animation of an orbit with a corrupt error every few seconds:

Which art forms were involved?

Light, sound, video and curation

Was there anything unexpected about what you saw/experienced?

I never experienced anything like it before as it had really intense sound and light features and wouldn’t have expected

What did you think was good, and why?

I think the intense sound was really good, because I could even feel it in my body. That contrasted with the lighting involved in the exhibition made it very immersive. I liked the fact that all the senses were engaged.

My favourite piece of work was the light hallway because it felt like some sort of heaven, as it was so bright. You couldn’t open your eyes, it reminded me of this place where the sky and the water merge:

Was there anything about the arts event you didn’t like? Why?

One of the rooms only had one work in it and it was a bit repetitive sometimes. 

What was the creative impact of the event?

There was one room where there were multiple screens, showing lots of coding and videos, there was lots of black and white and grey which had a visual impact. It was very abstract. 

Did the event develop your knowledge and understanding of the art form(s) ?

When I was walking around the exhibition, I got an idea as to how made his works using code and maths. I also learnt more about sound, such as the maximum frequency for humans, pitch of sound, volume of sound.  Hannah, a sound artists took us around the exhibition, and explained at the end that some of the sounds were sounds of the code itself.

London Transport Museum and Depot Tour 12th June & 19th June

I was very impressed with the tour at the depot and the museum as they both contained very specific details on the the buses such as the real bus route on the the buses from world war 2, the figurines involved on the scenery making it feel as if you were in that period of time.

My arts inspiration is: Millie Bobby Brown.

They inspire me because: 

They act not just with emotion but also with characteristics that include changing their accent. That helps a lot because it makes the movie or series seem more realistic. Another reason it is helpful is because it can help you when doing comedy shows for example because you can change your accent to make it seem funnier. It is also a skill in life that is just fun to do.

What they do and how: 

Millie Bobby Brown is an actress. She mainly acts in movies, series such as stranger things, and on TV. She is more into acting on screen and TV. Millie Bobby Brown has said that she is not much of a method actor so we don’t really know her secret to acting yet. She is also an influencer on tiktok and has her own beauty line. Unfortunately she has quit tiktok due to the hate she was getting. Another thing that she does is make scenes seem very realistic and change her accent. These are 2 skills that will improve your acting greatly.

What other people think about their work: 

People think she makes everything seem real but recently people have been thinking about her for something else. She has just released a new beauty line but people think it may be a scam and fake. This is one of the reasons she has quit tiktok. The young actress was a very successful girl and actress with upto 17.6 million followers before she quit. She had many supporters but with supporters come haters. She unfortunately could not deal with all the hate but is still happy and working hard.

What I like about their work: 

I like how she acts like whatever she’s acting is real because it makes it very realistic. I also like how she can change her personality when acting because it lightens the mood in tense and sad or angry scenes. I also like how they not only act but also take part in helping people because Millie Bobby Brown has also achieved her goal of being a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF.

What I have found out about their career or technique: 

Her technique is not using method acting but pretending it is really happening to her. Millie Bobby Brown is 17 years old now in 2021. She was born in Marbella, Malaga, Andalucia, Spain.

Millie Bobby Brown started acting in 2013 in shows including Grey's Anatomy and NCIS but she only played small background roles. Her biggest role was as eleven in Stranger things Which is a science fiction drama series. She has gone from background roles to acting in famous series and even having her own beauty line. She now knows many famous singers, rappers, actors, dancers and artists.

Syon: Bronze Award Part C - Arts Inspiration

My arts inspiration is: 

Daft Punk

Why they inspire me: 

Daft Punk are musicians from the 1990s. They inspire me because they have a very distinctive style of music. They also inspire me to explore more genres of music. They also inspire me to make my own music.

What they make, do and how: 

They used to make electro dance music. Sometimes their music is dance music, rock music, pop music and Jazz music. They use a Roland Jupiter-6 which is an analogue mixer to make their music.

What do other people think about their work: 

People like that they are extremely versatile. They also like that their style of Music changes and evolves E.G Jazz Funk Rock Pop. This article shows how fans reacted to Daft Punk announcing that they were going to break up. It is clear to say that they were devastated at the news.

I like their type of music and how they like to stay very anonymous. I like their style of clothing and helmets and how their looks have adapted over the years. 

What I have found out about their career and technique: 

I have found out that their names are guy and Thomas and that they started their band in 1993 and they also don’t talk through their helmets ever. Their music has featured in movies such as TRON Legacy and Interstellar 5555

Why they inspire me

In my eyes, Damien Hirst is one of the greatest living artists as he produces art that other artists don't come near making. His originality with many of his works is inspiring as well as his creativity to make unheard of art which compliments the atmosphere of the 21st century contemporary art world. Although there is a lot of controversy towards his work, there is no doubt that he is a creative genius and has produced intelligent and impressive works throughout his career.

What they make or do and how

Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist and sculptor who associates with a variation of art. He is well-known for his dead animal displays and spin-art paintings. He only paints some of his paintings, however, as for many of his paintings and sculptures, he has a team of assistants to help him, although the inspiration supposedly comes solely from his part.

What do other people think of his work

It is fair to say that Damien Hirst is a very controversial artist and his public impression varies immensely between individuals. Of course, there are the fanatics who are very fond of his original and previously unexplored style, which attracts a huge audience from all over the world. However, there are many who are against his artwork as they question the ethicality of some of his projects such as rotting animal corpses as well as the making of his art, whereby he often has people helping him with its creation rather than he himself making it.

What I like about his work

I think that his work is interesting as there are very few artists who have delved into such a genre of art. His artwork encapsulates his career and sometimes reflects his struggles in order to get the crowd that he does now, especially with his abstract spin-art. I also like the ideas associated with the work he produces and the many different interpretations towards it.

What have I found out about their career/technique

I’ve learned that a lot of his work is inspired by the odd mix of death and butterflies, while his painting shines with vitality and optimism. Also, I’ve learned that Damien First struggled a lot when he was younger to find a fitting art school for him that appreciated his style until he found one in London where he was able to produce artwork with similar features as his current work.
