Background: Celebrate the 70th anniversary of an event in history called the Partition of India. In August 1947, British India won its independence from the British and split into two new states that would rule themselves. The new countries were India and Pakistan. East Pakistan has since become Bangladesh.
Project brief: Diaries of 1947 is a personal project to document untold legends about the Partition of the Indian Sub-continent through web design for educational purposes.
Target audience: The target audience is 16 years + since the young generation would like to understand the stories of late family members who experienced what Partition was like.
What is the design problem or opportunity?
Progress has been made and many people will be celebrating India's independence this month. But just as the country was divided 70 years ago, there are still divisions to this day. Many young people know little about one of the 20th century’s horrifying conflict, 12 million were displaced in the biggest mass migration in recorded history.
There’s a collective amnesia about the Partition: it’s not taught in schools, there’s no memorial to its victims, no state-funded museum either side of the border. Therefore, my web design will highlight the nostalgia, memorials of dear ones died and mark the 70th anniversary of an event in history in today's current time.
What is the role of graphic communication in achieving this?
To design a website that it is more like praise to people's memories and stories. Using visuals, photographs from that era, to understand what life was back in time.
