In February 1981, 45 years ago, Emmanuel International began its first project in Brazil. It was in Passabém, a small town in the countryside. A team of young Brazilians and foreigners lived for four years in tents and worked with needy families in rural areas, helping with health and income-generating projects and sharing God's love with adults and children. This is the account of Jurema, who lived this rich experience.

45 years since the 1st Emmanuel International project in Brazil

In December 1980, the team of EI missionaries who would come to work in Brazil graduated. In February 1981, they arrived and joined the Brazilian team to start the Passabém Project in Brazil countryside.

This month Emmanuel International is celebrating 45 years since the beginning of the first EI project in Brazil. In February 1981, after months of preparation, Brazil Youth for Christ, in partnership with the Emmanuel International, sent a team of Brazilians and foreigners to work in Passabém, MG. Dênio, Jurema, Fred and Carla, Daniel and Ivanise, as well as Cathy, Rob, Debbie-Lea, Lois, Glen and Anita, all very young and full of dreams, moved to Passabém and there they set up their tents and a kitchen with bamboo walls and a canvas roof, to live on the same level as the poor families in the region and meet the basic needs of these families, in order to demonstrate in a practical way God's love for them.

Next weekend, the Terena Indigenous Church is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first church built in an indigenous area, in the Terena Bananal Village, Brazil. Emmanuel International Brazil has been a partner of the Terena Church since 2003, and we are sending three people from the mission's leadership to participate in this important time of celebration.
