Tiana felt badly about it pretty much as soon as she left the party. Vixey had apologized. And maybe Tiana should have done as she said, accepted it and forgiven her and played charades and acted like it was just a little hiccup in the night, just a little bump in the road that they could look back on later and laugh about.

But she couldn’t. Finding out everyone knew about Vixey’s boyfriend except her, and worse, that it was because Vixey was trying to protect Tiana’s feelings— it had poked at bruises that Tiana thought were healed, but, it turned out, really weren’t. She felt like she was on the outside, separated from everyone by her own hurt. She needed to talk to Vixey.

So as Tiana always did when she was upset about something, she turned to food. And she asked Vixey if she could come over, and when she got there, she was holding a tray of macaroni and cheese, her mother’s recipe, with “I’M SORRY” spelled out in bread crumbs.

“Hey,” Tiana said hesitantly. “Can we talk?”
