Keeping that side of himself locked away from her was normally easy. Normally he could suppress his anger well enough and get the job done, protecting her with no slip ups. But seeing her thrown to the ground, the loud crack that had followed sent rage through him. Keeping her safe was top priority and he’d fucked it up. He hadn’t searched well enough, hadn’t noticed the lingering sense of a presence that shouldn’t have been there to begin with. It had all been looked over and that’s how they’d ended up here.
His normally brown eyes and turned obsidian, hands forming into claw like appendages. Dom had made sure there was no trace of the creature once he was finished but that left him bloody, his white shirt now stained and torn beyond repair. Once he’d realized she was fine he’d taken a deep breath. Then another. Black eyes flickered brown and he’d followed her to the car. It was something he’d never thought she’d see. It was something he never wanted her to see.
The words had slipped out before he’d even processed them. His brain was a fog and her hand to his cheek caused him to freeze. The touch wasn’t unwanted but he hadn’t been prepared. Once he was done tearing the creature to shreads he’d assumed she’d get scared....want nothing to do with him anymore. This had been the final straw. But here she was, touching him as though he hadn’t brutally killed in front of her only an hour ago. It was more affection that he’d ever been used to.
Her words sting although they shouldn’t. He should be embracing her, thanking whoever was listening that she was alright. But he can’t bring himself to do either. Instead he is still. Dark eyes search her gaze before letting them fall to his lap.
“And I’m really....really fucking glad you’re okay,” A pause lingers. “I never wanted you to see that...that side of me.”
