Some of our knowledgeable volunteer guides like to ask visitors to guess the purpose of this handsome mahogany furnishing located in the corner of the dining room in our historic house. Go ahead, guess! Here's your hint: #partyinthelibrary This elegantly carved object is a cellarette, a kind of freestanding liquor cabinet designed to keep a household's wine and spirits secure (note the keyhole) and, if necessary, chilled: the hinged lid opens up to reveal a zinc tub to which ice could be added. Happy New Year from the Rosenbach! 🎉 🥂 🎉 Whether you'll be partying or not, we wish you all a safe and satisfying start to 2018. [Wine cooler. Mahogany and zinc. England, c. 1775-1825.
