After hustling for years as a singer, dancer, and comedian, Rudy Ray Moore ended up working at the record store Dolphin's of Hollywood. He heard a customer telling raunchy tales of a character named Dolemite, and assumed the role and his stories for his nightclub act. In 1971 and '72, he released three albums of Dolemite material. Moore spent the entirety of his record earnings on the movie Dolemite, which became a seminal example of blaxploitation, and a big hit. His work as Dolemite garnered him the title the Godfather of Rap. Snoop Dogg once said without Rudy Ray Moore, there is no Snoop Dogg. Dolemite appeared on 2 Live Crew, Big Daddy Kane, Busta Rhymes, and Snoop records. He cameoed in an episode of Martin. In 2000, he reprised his Dolemite role in the Insane Clown Posse movie, Big Money Hustlas. His final recording was also his first collaboration with Blowfly, in 2008.
