ikea shark can be soooo personal
The reason why Ernst Schmidt is so important (for me)..
As an first introduction. I am myself a scientist / science student in the field of Geology and Paleontology but with an interest in astrogeology and astrobiology, climate change and microfossils
I am German and my flatmate is astrophysicist. (That makes him cool ok?)
So why is Daniel Brühls character so important for me...
He is not evil. That maybe sounds weird but german characters (especially scientists) are often portrayed as evil in American films. Yes we get it you hate us. I nearly freaked out as I saw the film the first time and thought he was the bad guy. Thanks God it turned out to be wrong.
He does not die. Most germans again, die in filmes especially the evil ones. But also do the scientists. Mostly the film heros survive and they are often the ones without a scientific background - yeah yeah the hero has to fight cool and most scientists are awkward and clumsy right? - wrong! I know more scientists that make some kind of martial arts than nonscientist people. Believe me nothing is more bad ass than a cute girl with pink hair that has a black belt in karate and knows how to use a geology-hammer! (Go Cora!) Even my clumsy and nonsocial astrophysicist makes vovinam (a vietnamese martial arts)!
We know he is German! (I am looking at you Pasific rim!) So well that only makes sense if you like/know Pasific rim. Hermann Gottlieb and Newton Geiszler are German scientists in this scifi film and we only know from the books! They are portrayed (absolutely amazing portrayed) by American actors without an german accent. They use the english pronunciation of there names (that makes no sense!) They not even once speak german not even between each other... but hey a Pasific rim and the cloverfield project crossover is possible so let's do it! I need more interesting scientists in my life!
Representation of the ESA. Nasa is cool yes. Esa does not shoot people to space but... they are cool too. More international (you can work for Esa as a non European citizen!) and they make a lot of the GPS and earthobservation.
He is not escapist. Not all scientists are weird, have some kind of autism (I am sorry for this bad representation in films my dears) or have crazy nearly impossible ideas or explain everything absolutely complicated. He is social, funny and is not a genius. That makes him as a character relatable.
Well now a bit more private... I struggled a lot with my studies and he is a bit motivation. I lost a bit interested in my mean topic but with someone to look up to it is easier to focus.
And he is cute and adorable!
There is so much more to unpack but this is it for now. I would love to discuss this topic with you!
Thanks for reading.
Fuuuuuuck ya!
