Benson stared at him through the glass with something that looked almost cruel. He had spent months trying to push Randy away.
He'd told Randy to leave. Told him to stop coming back. Told him he was wasting his time on someone like him. Every ugly thing had been shoved into Randy's hands, practically yelling at him to take it and walk away.
Every time Benson lashed out, he just smiled at him.
Hated the way Randy looked at him.
Like he was worth staying for.
"Leave, Randy." Benson's voice came out rough through the phone pressed against his ear. He forced it lower, harsher. "Does your mom even know you came here?"
Randy laughed softly on the other side of the glass. It wasn't even a proper laugh.
Just a small breath of amusement.
"Well..." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I
might've told a tiny little lie."
His voice cracked at the end.
Something warm and painful twisted inside Benson's chest.
"Why won't you just go?" he asked.
The question slipped out before he could stop it.
This time Randy didn't answer.
He simply stepped closer and lifted his hand, pressing his palm against the glass between them. The gesture was so simple it almost felt unfair. Just Randy sitting there, looking at him with those adoring eyes and that impossible patience.
Benson stared at the hand for a long moment.
Then he sighed through his nose.
Reluctantly, he lifted his own hand and slowly pressed it against the glass. Right over Randy's palm. The cold surface separated them completely, but he could still trace the outline of Randy's fingers beneath his own.
He could almost feel his warmth .
Just that same soft, stubborn smile that made it seem like none of Benson's words mattered. Like Benson could spit venom and Randy would still look at him as though he was worth standing beside. Benson hated it. Hated how it made his chest hurt. Hated how Randy looked at him like he was the only thing left in this godforsaken world.
Benson kept his hand where it was.
The silence stretched between them
He lifted his head, finally making eye contact with Randy again.
