Asian Representation in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021)
After watching “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, I had a feeling that this movie would be a turning point for Asian representation in movies. With an Asian-American director and predominantly East Asian cast, the story was able to highlight the Chinese folklore and martial arts beautifully. The attention to detail when it came to the spoken language, the settings, the styling, the characters and the story itself came together to create an amazing story they highlights Chinese heritage. I was really impressed by the part when they enter the magical world and see the Chinese mythical creatures for the first time. It didn’t feel cheesy/corny/racist in any way. They were really careful to create this world that these creatures could live in without changing the folklore they’re from. A lot of respect was paid and I loved it. I also really loved that this film broke boundaries and didn’t follow the stereotypes that Asians would be typecast in. I do wish I saw more South and Southeast Asians, but since the story is mainly about the Chinese culture, I think the majority East Asian cast makes sense in this context. I’m really inspired by this film to take what I’ve learned about people and their stories and create a portrait that beautifully highlights who they are.

People liked the short design of Ricki! Started trying to do a full body turn around for Ricki at least and tried to start writing and reading up on things.
Started researching more about Zines and how individuals make them and such. Learning the start of the history behind zines and especially how the queer community utilized them during the 1980s and 90s with the HIV epidemic.
I remembered an artist I looked up to for their comic Sister Claire and numerous fanarts of Stratogirl and Elastigirl. I recalled that they made a lot of zines for their art and the story they tell through them. I reread some of them that I had bought a few years ago during this week and found the stories to still be compelling as ever. They can be found on tumblr https://yamino.tumblr.com/, for their specific tumblr for the Incredibles and other art, https://elastigale.tumblr.com/. A few of their zines can be found here https://yamino.gumroad.com/.

I asked my roommates if they would be willing to be part of my project. They said yes! All three of them! So I started designing and mapping out their counterparts in the story.
Ricki- vampire
Naruto(?)- kitsune
Ro(?)- cat individual, like Catra design
Spider and Shumai -> spirits/ghosts
Planned scenes:
-PA trip -> Leave The Road
-Remember when we were trying out a new name for two weeks? Yea, good times.
-Hallway chats at 12 am
-Cats playing and fighting over a new toy
-Our hallway ghost and cats

I went to watch Venom: Let There Be Carnage with my roommates during the weekend. It held a lot of sly romanticisms of how a couple might act but between a space alien and a trying reporter. It was interesting to see and found to be amusing throughout the gore through the movie.
We picked up a few episodes of another LGBTQ friendly show with prominent actors. For instance in OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, there is a character named Enid who is one of a few guiding characters for the young and upcoming hero K.O. But in why it matters to me who Enid is, she has numerous implied relationships with other female characters such as a previous rival who she looked up to, her current coworker who she had previously had a crush on, and her current girlfriend and best friend.
Train to Busan
Just watched Train to Busan a movie that critiques capitalism.
Summary:
-This movie shows the selfishness and individualist attitude (interested in exploring this)
-See a little bit of glorification of work (in lines implying that you need to study hard and that the daughter will understand while he worked so hard and couldn't be with him)
-See the attitude that the only way you can fail at this capitalistic game is if you're lazy or stupid (the binary thinking in Capitalism I'm interested in exploring, winners or losers)
Notes:
Love of working, suggestion that failure can only come from not being smart or working hard “don’t flunk school or you’ll end up like him”
Idea that you must finish what you start and not really care about emotional feeling or what causes you not to finish
Idea that people shouldn’t protest or fight against the status quo that things would be different in the past “people riot over anything back in the old days they’d be re-educated
Government lies about pandemic, says just violent outbreak.
That idea of not working together when the daughter gave up the seat for a woman. He says she needs look out for herself.
Only thinking about yourself wanting to go to Busan alone the Dad days and a Train Car
Individualism
Selfishness
Wanting to leave the train with the people behind
Contrast with the pregnant woman’s husband who opens the door for the asshole dad who wants to bring people behind. Who tells the Dad to stick his head back in to take out some zombies and helps the jerk protagonist father get his kid back.
Working together in the fight. Character development?
Glorifying sacrifice or suffering —>she’ll understand why you worked so hard when you get older
Jerk guy CEO of something express embodiment capitalist ideology wanting to kick those others out fighting so hard to keep them out. He throws people into zombies as diversions sometimes unnecessarily. Always looking out for himself.
Capitalism cutting corners for profit causing the spill to leak and the zombie apocalypse.
Movie: Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen: Directed by Stephen Chbosky. With Ben Platt, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams. Film adaptation of the Tony and Gra
I saw the Dear Evan Hansen movie recently, and I thought it might be good to talk about since the main character, Evan, has social anxiety. While I am familiar with the Broadway show and love the music, I do not think that this is a good representation of people with social anxiety. Evan's social anxiety leads him to do terrible things that I do not agree with. I do think that the song "Waving Through a Window" is very relatable to those who have social anxiety.
