Final Crit Comic
Reflection on This Week
After creating this week's comic, I once again looked at my midterm comic. I am much happier with this prototype than the first even though I was pretty happy with the first one when I first made it. I took a lot of feedback from my midterm critique as well as from my meeting with Nick, and I can really see why the changes were suggested. I made the character that was supposed to represent the main character's anxiety look different from other characters by making her more abstract and a flat shadow on the wall. I hope that this will fix any confusion of the viewer thinking that she is just another one of the main character's friends. I also enjoyed giving myself more freedom the not have everything be so clean. It was not only more relaxing to make, but I also think it helped with the mood of anxiety. I hope that I can continue to be happy as develop the comic to the final product.

Aspect Prototype 2
For this week's prototype, I drew another scene of my comic taking a lot of the advice from my midterm critique into account. I redesigned both the main character and the character that represents the main character's anxiety. I tried making the anxiety character more flat and abstract than the main character and making her a shadow ot the main character. I also made the whole look of the comic less clean by using textured brushes.
Main Character Design: Shape Language Comparison
Nick and I had a conversation about shape language in my character design when we last met. My original design was too square, which communicates strength. We talked about using a mixture of circle (friendly) and triangle (unpredictable) to better communicate what I wanted my main character to be like.
Oblique Strategy: Accept Advice
For this week's active research, I decided to accept advice and work on redesigning the main character of my comic based off of Nick's advice. I tried using more rounded shapes and giving her a more unique silhouette. I also tried using more textured brushes to make it look less clean based off of Nancy's advice.

Midterm Comic Coloring Experiments
After getting feedback during my midterm critique and from one on one meetings, I chose to experiment by coloring my comic by hand this week. I used colored pencil, alcohol markers, and acrylic paint for these experiments.
Colored Pencil
In my colored pencil i found I had most control over the textures I could create, but color choice is limited. I am also not sure how I feel about the white of the paper showing through.
Alcohol Marker
This has a cleaner look than the colored pencil. There is still texture but without the white of the paper showing through like it does for the colored pencil. I am also limited in color choice.
Acrylic Paint
The paint gives me the most control over the color, but it is also the medium I have least control using. It was a challenge to stay within the small shapes of the line art. Also, since it is an opaque medium, I had to overlay the line art back over the painting digital after scanning it in.
10/27/21 Secondary Advisor Meeting Notes
On redesigning internal monologue character
menacing might not be the right word
try symbol instead of individual
objects: mirror, microscope, magnifying glass
maybe a version of the main character
what if the portal was the guide
Understanding Comics realism spectrum: try making this character either more abstract or hyper-realistic than the rest of the characters
Difference between worlds
Make the difference more distinct
Match the feeling of the situation
Maybe style/or material can vary per situation
be experimental
Colors
The two color palettes may be too similar
Try warm and cool
Acrylic iteration in the 7 days of iteration may be too much. Somewhere between there and the current palette
May just be that purple palette doesn't have enough contrast
Character Design
Shape language- circle, square, triangle
Current main character design needs tweaking
shape language- too square now.
May be looking for use of circle and triangle (see watercolor design in 7 days of iteration)
circle + triangle: friendly looking with some uncertainty
Character silhouette should be recognizable without inner details
Current main character silhouette isn't recognizable right now.
current inner monologue character has a more recognizable silhouette
Revisit style iterations
use texture
Drawn to my hand-drawn style iterations

More white space

Fantasy Anxiety-Inducing Scenarios
This week I've been thinking about how I could make other anxiety-inducing scenarios into dangerous fantasy situations. Here are some examples I came up with.
Walking through a room full of people: tile door puzzle. step on the wrong tile and statues turn at you and begin to shoot arrows.
running into aquaintances, unexpectedly: stealth mission, don't be noticed.
writing emails/texts: riddles. writing the wrong thing sets off some kind of trap.
ordering at a restaurant: puzzle. You have to put the right thing in the right place.
meeting a group of new people: gladiator style performance where the audience has to like what you do.
My installation for midterm critique this week. It includes some early comics I made, the style tests I completed for seven days of iteration, and my prototype of an intro to my comic.
Prototype
I made a 7-page prototype of the beginning of my graphic novel. It follows the main character and her anxiety around making a call. When she is anxious she is transported to a fantasy world where the phone call turns into monsters jumping out of a portal (phone.) The character within the fantasy world is supposed to represent her inner monologue/anxiety.
Movie: Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen: Directed by Stephen Chbosky. With Ben Platt, Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams. Film adaptation of the Tony and Gra
I saw the Dear Evan Hansen movie recently, and I thought it might be good to talk about since the main character, Evan, has social anxiety. While I am familiar with the Broadway show and love the music, I do not think that this is a good representation of people with social anxiety. Evan's social anxiety leads him to do terrible things that I do not agree with. I do think that the song "Waving Through a Window" is very relatable to those who have social anxiety.
Secondary Advisor Meeting 10/6/21
I met with Nick last week to talk about my project. Here are my notes.
Things to look at
Chris Ware
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud
The X-Files-Good example of vignette style storytelling with some short arcs that go for a few episodes and some single episode arcs (monster of the week style)
Anime, Manga, and animated shows- also can be looked at for telling stories through short arcs.
Tips on how I could approach writing this story
Visualizing instead of explaining is the strength of comics as a medium (show don’t tell)
Word of caution-it’s hard to create a cohesive narrative when it is based on personal experience, so vignettes might be easier.
Don’t get stressed about length. Get the story done and then if it’s too much, reconsider.
Might be good to look at how serialized TV shows approach storytelling (see above examples)
Break it down into small pockets and refine them over and over.
Develop scenes, and put them on flash cards and move them around to see where they fit best.
