just a little scene after toriel finally lets frisk pass and they feel like shit for disappointing her. at least they’ve got good ol’ chara to give the worst pep talk in the world
So for no particular reason, some of my vague headcanon amalgamates:
Frisk:
• Is deaf, if anything. They can see /albeit with a heavy squint because their eyes are really photosensitive) and talk, even if they can’t hear what they say. Even with Chara helping, fuck the piano puzzle.
• Pretty sharp at puzzles and good at reading people. Perspicacious, that’s the word.
• Can be kind of a jerk!
• Chara supplies the suggestions, and the player picks which one, but they choose how to carry them out.
• Apparently doesn’t know what heckling is.
• See re: jerk. They really know how to gut punch emotional weak spots.
• A petty thief and compulsive hoarder. Nothing anyone has ever done has been able to curb this habit.
• Used to looking after themselves for a long time even before climbing the mountain. Which probably explains the earlier bullet point. Light rained down from the heavens when they learned monster food doesn’t rot. They don’t care about stale.
• They eat a lot and they eat fast. But surprisingly tidily.
• That Person who just silently and deadpanly judges you from the background.
• That expression that says ‘I’d like you to just kind of replay what you just said/did in your head and tell me what’s wrong with that picture’.
• Seriously at several points they are just so done with all this bullshit.
• Especially if they’ve seen it before by reset. They just kind of mentally tune it out ‘til it’s done.
• Will eventually beat the Snowdin Dogs at poker only to lose to Sans.
• Friendly, playful, whimsical and mischievous. While genuinely curious and explorational, they often like deliberately examining absolutely everything just to rile up an impatient Chara.
• Frisk is a nickname they got once that stuck because they liked it enough to make it their own name.
• Often surprised that anyone likes them.
• Kind of passive. They prefer to let others take the lead in conversations and planning etc. Very much an introvert. However, they’re not a pushover. They got determination after all, and won’t budge once set on a thing.
• Is the sort that listens and listens and then says a single sentence that blows everything out of the water for everyone. That trope.
• Has a very flat head and knows it.
• Thinks that actions the Player takes that they would take are their own, although they do feel kind of different during events the Player has no control over, like when they hide behind the lamp. Pretty much all Neutral runs fall within this latitude, because they actually do believe ‘kill or be killed’, at least outside of a Pacifist run where they slowly realize the holes in that philosophy. They don’t want to, but they will attack or kill to survive if accosted.
• Look I basically headcanon they’re Mad Max you can’t stop me.
• Thinks that actions the Player takes that they would not are Chara’s. The line is drawn between ‘killing things that engage in a manner that could kill them’ and ‘deliberately hunting down monsters to kill’. They just kind of… break, under that.
• Likes butterscotch.
Chara:
• Is a massive NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD
• Supplies all the music, because nerd.
• Multilingual! Love showing off they’re multilingual.
• Love showing off period.
• Seriously, that ‘stop being so dramatic’ ‘I don’t know what you mean, I say, as I descend from the ceiling surrounded by mist’ post? That’s them. Nothing anyone has ever done has been able to curb this habit.
• They could have made a good actor.
• Snarky, cynical, pessimistic, observational, logical, practical, a total cactus, misanthropic, well read, low opinion of self despite projecting confidence, and a pun lover. So… kind of Peridot now I think about it. I need to stare at a wall for a bit.
• They really like being the one ‘in the know’, because they like being in control.
• No really, they need to be in control, or have power in a situation. They hate not knowing what’s going on or being powerless, probably because of their past. They like to be needed rather than need things themselves, because that’s a kind of power.
• You can see this in how they act in the Asriel tapes.
• …aaaaand this is also the side of them the Player warps and twists in Genocide, until it’s all that’s left.
• Because while Chara is a dick.
• A. Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiick.
• /Asriel wasn’t wrong.)
• They aren’t a demon. Not until you make them one.
• Kind of a cautionary tale on the dark side of well meaning determination; running roughshod over what people actually want in the name of doing what you think is best for them.
• In this way they’re very much a foil to Frisk.
• Impatient. Tends to focus on something and consider everything else a distraction from the goal. Frisk faffing around really grinds their gears, which is often why Frisk does it, the troll.
• This is also why they’re aspected towards the FIGHT and FLEE buttons. Whatever gets the roadblock of a confrontation over quickly.
• Manipulative, but their impatience and desire for control can often trump this and ruin subtlety whoops.
• I’m torn between them fading away after Pacifist because the entire thing is Asriel and Chara learning to let go and having them stick around so they can be disgruntled that Frisk knows more about the current state of the surface than they do and comment on everything with a bit of a ‘in my day’ air. It’s a conundrum.
• Thinks everything the Player does is Frisk. Poor Frisk.
• Likes cinnamon.
And for fun…
Reada:
• A total dork. But that’s not news.
• Had an existential crisis in their teenage years that was so bad they got sent to the local shaman/witch/doctor person, who was a bit ‘that sounds fake but okay’ on learning what prompted it. Now I think about it this might be how they met the purple soul.
• Never killed a sentient being with their spear. It was for hunting. The sword was their first true weapon.
• Fun loving gregarious personality that slowly got worn down through timeline after timeline after timeline of failing to achieve an end result where no humans and no monsters died. Plus LOVE. After a while, started having trouble telling which timeline they were in from major PTSD.
• The six souls got increasingly capital C Concerned. Those could only SAVE.
• In a way, the barrier was kind of them giving up/the six humans staging an intervention.
• They could RESET, but could only reset to the point where they first died and by then the war had already started or near as.
• In the modern AU, writes secret fanfic of an OT3 of them and Toriel and Asgore. It’s kept in a locked drawer, but it’s only a matter of time before the kids find it and start giggling.
• Speaking of, they were a major shipper on deck for everyone else.
• Loved learning new things; would often pester people demonstrating a skill to teach them that skill regardless of what it is.
• As a result they kind of have a very eclectic skillset.
• Breaks into people’s houses to say hello. Nothing anyone has ever done has been able to curb this habit.
• Not the River Person. Sorry, passivechara. I do like the idea that monster dust + human determination = not good for the human tho.
• /I admit I prefer the River Person to be the River Person. Mysterious and meta but themselves.)
• Their magic is kind of reinforcing and subtle, and takes advantage of knowing the tricks of reality. If their sword started glowing red, you knew you should run.
• Chara would later show this ability on the Real Knife.
• Never had a Player.
• Doesn’t know what either butterscotch or cinnamon are.
• It’s a travesty.
So I have been reading some cool stuff passivechara wrote about poncho human (if you haven’t, you totally should check them out, i mean it, some really good stuff there!!!) and I suddenly came up with this idea that Chara could have worn the poncho thing with the villagers (since Chara was the first child to be fallen after the war so they would have been born shortly after the war). I was just enlightened and doodled some crazy sets of smol Chara wearing poncho. This is just few of my favorites. It’s my headcanon now.
