This was Sandbag, he’s a camel spider and I could only really post these pictures from his travel tub because the others are pretty gory or blurry, these were taken a bit over a year ago

I really really love camel spiders but they just don’t do well in captivity and there just isn’t enough research yet

#gif #camel spider #sun spider #sandbag #Solifugae #saw the little guy in a shop in that tiny tub and went away to do research #after doing as much research as I could get I found they don’t do well in captivity at all and the longest they’ve lived is 4-5 months #I did find a research paper that suggested a hibernation period and set up an enclosure to mimic his natural home as much as possible #I got him despite the fact he was already a bit lethargic so at least he didn’t have to live in the tiny box anymore #he lived about 4 months after I brought him home #found that he didn’t much like the crickets like the one already in with him in the picture #he preferred softer bugs and the odd pinky mouse #it was really upsetting when he passed away but at least it was better than letting him stay in that tiny tub #past bugs #while doing research I found they’ve got a really wild reputation #apparently they eat camels #and they supposedly run 10mph #and they do in fact chase your shadow in the desert to get away from the sun #there’s a funny video of a group of soldiers being scared by one #like actual soldiers are scared of these #they’ve got a nasty bite but not deadly #they chew into food too #seriously just google myths about them it’s wild #bagt post #bugblr #the fluffy camel spiders are the cutest thing there’s some videos on YouTube but not many

Some budwing stick insects I had ages ago, I don’t have this species in my collection anymore but maybe I will again in the future! This is actually the first stick insect species and first bug I ever had when I was 10

So these were my Nan’s giant African land snails

She had 4 adults, 4 baby albino ones and then the brown ones had a bunch of babies She sold them all about a year ago and I’m not sure why but I got pictures! I love the albino ones and the babies are so so cute

Two mantises I had 3 years ago, sadly I only have three pictures of the first but the second is the one I posted about previously That’s my pinky finger for size comparison the first day I got them! First is a giant shield mantis and second is an Indian flower mantis

A mantis I had again 2 or 3 years ago, now this little one went through a lot of colour changes and he came out very silvery which pictures do not do justice to in his final moult He’s the only mantis to attempt to eat me to this day and it happened more than once including during the handling session in the first picture but he failed I’m afraid and it just felt weird He reminds me of Martha, she has also gone through these colour changes so she might turnout the stunning silvery adult too but we will see!

So the first of the past bugs pictures was my very first mantis ever! She was a giant rainforest mantis and she only ever flew once, as soon as I opened her tank after her final moult she flew onto my face which took me by surprise and it was so loud! It sounded like bird wings flapping when she flew but she never even attempted to again for some reason The pictures are from the very first day I got her up to the last picture I have of her She developed some kind of eye problem during her life which I still don’t know the cause of despite so much searching for mantis eye problems but she still managed fine with her one good eye, she just focused on the prey a little longer than most
