Southern Air
Honestly I don't follow the news like I feel I should. As it is, it's so overwhelming. The corruption, especially as it relates to military decisions and spending is truly hard to fathom. But often it seems to me that I do not dislike the villains nearly enough. That thought made me think of Pat Robertson who I disliked plenty.
Along the way I stumbled across a publication online, oddly hosted by the CIA. It's a PDF of Covert Action magazine from Spring 1987, Special Issue of the Religious Right. CovertAction Magazine is the current iteration of the publication.
It seemed to me that Pat Robertson really had to work hard to be evil. Whereas being evil appears effortless for Elon Musk, Jared Kushner, Stephen Miller, and today's cast of evil baddies. That seems the opposite of progress.
The Covert Action issue probably came up because I was searching for Southern Air. In October of 1986 a plane carrying arms to Nicaragua Contras was shot down. The plane's pilot was Eugene Hasenfus and his capture began the unraveling of the Iran/Contra plot. This chronology is a useful resource for understanding the Contra War. Historian Greg Grandin ten years ago--on the occasion of the 30-year anniversary of Hasenfus's capture wrote in The Nation, Iran/Contra Was the Prototype for Post-Vietnam Imperial Adventure.
Trough today's lens it seems there were many prototypes. My opinion is we don't pay enough attention to Africa. Perhaps the extraordinarily evil African immigrant, Elon Musk, may help us focus attention on this aspect of our Nation's history and legacy.
