CEBU CITY — An emotional Mary Joy Tabal thanked her supporters and benefactors during a celebration of her qualifying for the Rio Olympics and also admitted that her failure in the Boston Marathon only added fuel to her passion to chase the Olympic dream. Tabal ran the Ottawa Marathon in 2:43:31, better than the Olympic qualifying time of 2:45. It came a month after she faltered in the Boston Marathon, finishing the race in over 2:49. “I really expected to perform and make the 2:45 qualifying in Boston. I was very confident because it was my first time to be sent abroad to train, so I expected big,” Tabal said during her welcome dinner and thanksgiving at the Casino Espanol Monday night. When she failed to make it, Tabal said she decided to push through with her goal of making the Rio Olympics. “Because a lot of people inspired me, I just took it as part of my trial. Whatever were the reasons for my failure, I have to focus more on the target. I have to focus on my own goal and not the expectations,” she said. After a brief rest in Cebu, Tabal left for Japan again where coaches discovered something wrong in her leg that caused her to change her running form. After addressing that problem, a confident Tabal left for Canada, where she eventually made the qualifying time and set the record. Tabal, who left the national team last year, also said she is willing to comply with the process to get reinstated in the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association, to get a slot to the Rio Olympics. Jonel Borromeo of Motor Ace Philippines, Tabal’s sponsor, met with Patafa president Philip Ella Juico recently to discuss Joy’s fate. “It was very positive. We discussed how to get Joy in the Olympics and if the only way is to get Joy reinstated, then we will follow the procedures,” said Borromeo. Aside from submitting a certified finish of her stint in Canada, Tabal will write a letter to Patafa asking for reinstatement. Tabal, a three-time Milo marathon women’s champion and a silver medalist in the Southeast Asian Games, clarified that the decision to resign from the national team was hers alone. “I decided to resign because at that time, that was the best move for me,” she said. Patafa officials told Manila reporters that Tabal opted to resign to focus on commercial runs. However, Borromeo said he isn’t keen on discussing the past but is focused on getting Tabal to the Olympics. “I assume there would have to be some agreement between Patafa and Joy. We can’t get everything we want but our objective is to get to the Olympics,” said Borromeo. Based on his initial meeting, Borromeo also said Patafa is amenable to having its national athletes train outside of Manila. “Actually, they allow athletes to train outside of Manila, they just want to see the program,” Borromeo said.”If Joy does get reinstate, we are going to try and send her back to Japan.” Tabal credited her stint in Japan for the vast improvement in her running. “Aside from the monitored program, whatever changes they want or new things they want to try, they always consult with coach Philip,” Tabal said. Tabal said she trained full time for the first time in Japan, and had everything she consumed monitored. “It was a big adjustment because I’m not really into vegetables but in Japan, I had to force myself to eat vegetables, because that was part of the program,” she said. http://j.mp/1PGVJyt
