Gaia commission for Patitomuerto~
Can I put in my two cents? In Sally Donovon, I saw a story arch that we hadn't had the pleasure to see. She's a strong, smart, and beautiful woman, the first two absolutely needed in the profession she's in. Being a detective, literally in a mans world at that. When we first meet her, she's defensive around Sherlock, angry even before he makes his acussations. What I heard in her words was a woman who had been like Molly, who had that same love of Sherlock and his abilities (tbc)
Continued: Unlike Molly, she didn’t demurely come back to Sherlock after he disgraced her again and again. She decided if he couldn’t be a person to her, then why should she be one to him? Obviously, it isn’t the best reaction, and for Sherlock doesn’t make a difference. As for Andersons ‘reconciliation’, I’d almost find it more embaressing for Donovon if she’d been the one to go insane and obsess over Sherlock. And I have a feeling that if it had been her, people would complain that she was being shown as another example of the otherly emotional, unstable woman stereotype. Instead, she continued to be Lestrades right hand woman. Steady in the face of his anger, and sure they would catch a criminal, something more important then obsessing over a man she had wronged. She’s a wonderful charecter, and if anything, they wrong her by not having her more in the show. Sorry this was so long! Just wanted to show how I saw things.
This is a super valid response and I just have a few things to add/clarify.
1. I don’t mean to say I want Sally to take Anderson’s role, I just question that an arc many people have interpreted as redemptive was given to him when Sally got next to nothing, not even a chance to react to Sherlock’s resurrection. I agree that her suddenly worshiping Sherlock would be super problematic.
2. It’s awesome that she’s still doing her thing in Season 3, but it still wasn’t her case. She was practically set dressing and even though it seemed like she was doing just as much work, they still referred to it as Lestrade’s case. I think she even said something about someone else taking credit for Lestrade’s work and I wanted to shake the TV. GURL WHAT IS STOPPING YOU FROM GETTING IN THERE AND TAKING CREDIT ARE YOU ATTACHED AT THE HIP WHAT EVEN
3. I like that headcanon for Sally, but the writers never bother to tell us that. They don’t waste time explaining her disdain, which means they just wanted an antagonist, not a sympathetic character.
I’m super happy you like Sally Donovan in spite of the way the show treats her she is a queen among thorns and I wish Moffat and Gatiss would realize that too.
