The biggest mistake that Achilles probably makes is that he know his happiness lies in Patroclus, in being with him and loving him. Yet he goes off the path and loses his sanity and love to fame. Achilles is doomed the moment he thrives for fame. If he only had thriven for happiness he would have found it in his love that was with him from the very beginning on.
