Schitt's Creek - what is it about this (wonderful!) show that you love? When did you first tune in to it?
And who's your favourite?!
Hi, @alysiswriting Thanks so much for the ask! Sorry it took me a hot minute to respond. I was wrapping up with my pride fest projects and I didn’t want to give you a half assed answer. I wrote out a whole response only to then delete it by accident. So, if you want to know how life is going that’s a pretty accurate summation. 😆 Anyway, I rewrote my response:
I started watching SC in the 5th season. I had a very stressful job at the time (still do) and it has been my saving grace ever since. It makes me feel better no matter what I am going through.
The character development drew me in right away. I felt like I knew who they were as individuals from the very start. Each season showed character growth both individually and with each other. They change so much between S1 and S6 and I attribute that to each actor’s skill and commitment to the role as well as Dan’s writing/directing. It showed their growing pains as they adjusted to no longer being wealthy. You saw them become motivated to accomplish their goals based on their own merit rather than relying on their money to do it for them. And, you saw them finally admit (to themselves, at different times) that being a family was important to them. They wanted to be together rather than being together out of obligation. I still tear up at the end of barn party because the family feels are so palpable.
I was also drawn in by the humor. It’s placed to accent what is going on as opposed to using it as a crutch to move the plot along. Or, to mask the fact that there is no plot like most TV shows here in the U.S. Each character also has their own sense of humor woven into them. They use it in various ways to interact with each other and the world at large.
My favorite character is Patrick. He’s a sweet little button face and I am irrationally protective of him. He’s boring, patient, and stable compared to the others. I mean, it’s not hard to accomplish 😆 but he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doing any better than the rest of them. He just hides it better and his “fake it til you make it” is more believable. He’s not the rock everyone thinks he is and he goes into inward distress when he can’t live up to it. In fact, he needs a rock more than anyone else. He had a lot to process and, according to canon, he was left to do a lot of it on his own. I analyze by nature and by profession so I think he’s actually one of the more complex characters. When it really comes down to it the reason I read and write fic is because of him and his relationship with David. This is probably a longer answer than you were looking for but, like most things in life, I have no shortage of opinions or thoughts 😆 This is probably a much longer response than you were looking for but I have no shortage of opinions and/or thoughts about SC.
