Patrick was an interesting colleague to have to say the least. You weren’t quite prepared for everything the consultant had to offer when you first came onto the CBI team. It was a little after Van Pelt did so you at least weren’t alone in being a newbie. Patrick took an immediate liking to you, which you didn’t mind at all because you felt the same about him.
The consultant was interesting and wild and an entire different vibe than the rest of the government field had to offer. Patrick was a breath of fresh air. The only problem is you had started to catch feelings for the mentalist. How could you not? Patrick was everything you had ever wanted and more but there were two small issues.
“I know I stand in line until you think you have the time To spend an evening with me”
One: You were colleagues, well technically you were even though Patrick wasn’t an agent. And Two: You knew he wasn’t ready for a relationship yet. Maybe he never would be, you didn’t blame him of course. Patrick loved his wife and child and you never wanted to try and step in before he was ready for something new.
You respected Patrick and his aversion to a new relationship but you just wished he’d stop, oh I don’t know being the way he is.
“And if we go someplace to dance, I know that there's a chance You won't be leaving with me”
It felt like every case, every turn, every everything had him finding a new excuse to flirt with someone. There were times Patrick flirted with you, of course it was in his nature, but someone from the case? It’s ridiculous! Every time you felt like maybe there was a spark between you and the consultant he was flirting with the widow of the victim or something like that that made that dream crumble away.
You lived with it though. Lived with that feeling of love you felt every time you and Patrick had a conversation. Lived with the fact you knew it couldn’t ever happen. Even though you lived with it, it killed you.
Today was like any other, another case closed and more paperwork to be dealt with tomorrow. Tonight though? Tonight was for partying. Patrick always insisted that the team needed to “unwind”, or whatever he called it, after a long case like this one. Of course Rigsby had finally gained the courage to ask Van Pelt out so they were sneaking off, to no ones surprise, to have a “secret date”. Cho didn’t want to go out and get hungover on a weekday and Lisbon didn’t want to get stuck third wheeling with you and Patrick.
So of course now it was just you and the man you were desperately trying to avoid because the aching in your heart grew every time you were together.
“And afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two”
Maybe drinking with Patrick wasn’t a good idea. Maybe you should have gone the Cho route and not come to a bar. Maybe, maybe, maybe, whatever. All you knew at this point was that Patrick was just having one or two soft drinks and you were, well you were going all out.
Who even knows why. It’s probably the stress or probably the fact you’ve had a one sided love with your coworker for who knows how long. But here you were, Patrick had been with you the night being so kinda and funny and charming and now he’s taking care of you drunk and your mind was flooded with adoration for the man.
“You’re so nice to me Patrick,” you ask groggily, voice muffled by the way your head was face planted into your arm on the table.
“Oh no no you wont be saying that when I tell the team all about this tomorrow.” Patrick jokes, taking a sip of the water he had originally gotten for you but went basically untouched. “Just you wait.” Patrick smiles and you can practically feel your heart reaching out for him.
“No you’re nice, so so nice.” You slur your words and it’s a wonder Patrick even knows what you’re saying.
“And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love you"
You weren’t thinking straight, not in the slightest. “You know Patrick,” You start and then stop and think. But again, not thinking straight. “I just, I just really love you but I can’t I shouldn’t” You’re words are muffled and slurred but Patrick hears it all the same. “I don’t know I just really really like you.” You start to giggle at yourself and probably something else you’ve found funny.
“I can see it in your eyes That you despise the same old lies you heard the night before”
Patrick on the other hand has an uncomfortable sour look on his face, not in discomfort but some other emotion you weren’t paying enough attention too distinguish. You didn’t know that his heart dropped at your words. You didn’t know that he felt the same way but he wasn’t ready, he couldn’t let himself go there again. Not yet.
But there you were, still had the same innocent dreamy look on your face as you took another drink of the cheep booze Patrick bought for you earlier. He still loved you. But he was afraid and wasn’t ready. Not for this.
“And though it's just a line to you, for me it's true And never seemed so right before”
“Patrick do you not feel that way about me?” You’re voice cuts through Patrick’s thoughts. The man noticed the way you suddenly were very sad and the way your beautiful eyes began to fill with tears.
“No,” Patrick swallowed the lump in his throat, “No that’s not it. I do,” he paused, even now Patrick had a hard time bringing himself to say those three words. “I do feel that way about you but now isn’t the time. Okay?” Patrick find’s the words and delivers them gently enough it doesn’t break you.
All you needed to hear is that he felt the same way too and the tears in your eyes were all dried up. You pushed yourself up off from laying against the table and stretched.
“I think we should be done for the night,” Patrick poses it as a statement and leaves no room for disagreements on your part. Patrick is desperately trying to get his bearings back and start acting normal again. You just whine at his words which makes hims chuckle but he pulls the drink in your hand away from you and replaces it with water.
“I’ll take you home, common y/n” Patrick says to you and that’s the last of the night you remember. It’s been quite some time since then, you didn’t remember basically anything from that night and Patrick made it his mission to keep you from remembering what you had said about loving him.
But time had passed and Patrick’s feelings for you were growing with every passing day. The emptiness in his chest was being filled and it was all thanks to you. The idea of being in love and being in a relationship weren’t so scary anymore. But now Patrick had two problems.
One: How was he going to go about asking you out. And Two: Do you still have feelings for him? Of course the second one wasn’t too hard to figure out considering he was almost able to read minds but he still needed to be one hundred percent sure before he let himself go there.
“I practice every day to find some clever lines to say To make the meaning come through”
Of course Patrick Jane was still Patrick Jane though at the end of the day. He was getting more flirty and bold with his advances on you. But for some reason nothing was really working, at least he didn’t think so. Both you and Patrick considered each other you’re closest friend and even though you knew what he was doing you were worried that it still wasn’t real.
This new change up in how Patrick was acting last for a little over a month before this case’s investigation started. The case was nothing crazy by any means, well until the end of it.
Patrick had gone out and made the killer mad, to no ones surprise it got him into trouble. The killer wanted to make what Patrick called his "final stand" meaning he was tucked away in some warehouse and it was your teams job to capture him.
It was late when it happened, Lisbon was instructing the team on what to do and where to go. You and Vanpelt took the left exit while Rigsby and Cho took the right. Lisbon stayed behind with Jane and the local police to find a way in through the front.
Vanpelt walked quietly behind you checking every door and corner you came across and yelling "clear" every time she didn’t find anything. Suddenly a loud crash was heard right up in front of you and the other agent.
Yours and Vanpelt's guns immediately darted towards the source of the noise. Before either of you could do anything shots rang out from the killer. Your mind and body were immediately flooded with nothing but pain.
It all happened in a blur. You got shot in the side, boiling pain seeped through your body from the impact. Your gun, and your body, dropped to the floor in a painful heep on the ground. There were more gunshots which you hoped were from Vanpelt behind you.
That’s when you blacked out. The last thing you remember seeing was Vanpelt hovering over you. The last thing you felt was a burning fire in your side taking over you.
When you woke up the first thing you noticed was bright lights baring down onto you. The air was cool and and you felt a little like you were floating. The next thing you noticed was a heavy weight on the bed next to you, blond curls and a grey suit jacket told you all you needed to know.
"Patrick?" You say but your voice is hoarse and you dont have enough strength to move much at all. It was then you relied where you were, it was a hospital room. You must've been brought here after what happened.
Fear prickled your skin and made your mind race with adrenaline but the sudden movement next to you seased all the thoughts in your head.
Patrick had woken up and was wiping the sleep from his eyes. "Y/n?" The consultant mumbles and then fully wakes up. "Y/n, you're awake!" He exclaims with a happy smile on his face.
"I am!" You try to match his energy but it just isn’t in you. "What happened?" You ask looking around and then down at yourself.
"You got shot and had to get brought in for emergency surgery, everything's ok now don’t worry." Patrick explains calmly but it looks like he's been in distress for the past few hours. His face his tired and he looks worn out.
One of your hands reaches up to hold his face in your hand, your thumbs brushes the skin beneath it gently. "Thank you for being here Patrick." You mumble and it makes Patrick have a tired smile that is infectious.
“But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late and I'm alone with you."
It's quiet for a while, it's just the two of you basking in each others presence gazing into the other's eyes with adoration. “Has the doctor said anything about my condition?” You ask and suddenly Patrick is very solemn.
“You’ll be alright it’ll just,” Patrick hesitates, “Take some time.” You suspected as much but hearing it doesn’t make it any better. You let out a quiet ‘oh’ and shift a little in the bed. The quietness is back but it’s disturbed, Patrick’s hand reaches for yours and when he holds it tight the pain bubbling up in you chest subsides.
"The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get red and, oh, the night's so blue”
“Y/n, when you got shot I,” Patrick starts but his voice is tight and it’s as if he’s holding himself back from crying. “I was so worried about you. And I was terrified of what might happen to you.” The man explains as his grip on your hand tightens.Your heart swells the more Patrick talks, you try to cut in and say something but he stops you.
“Please?” Patrick asks while raising a hand to show he wants you to let him speak. “I thought I was going to loose you and it made me realize that I need to stop being afraid.” Patrick explains and the more he talks the wetter his eyes get but he pushes through.
“And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like “I love You”
“Y/n I love you,” Patrick confess and immediately you are flushed with a bubbling sense of butterflies that make your face red. A tear falls down Patrick’s face as he talks and his hand still hasn’t let go of yours. “I have for so long but I’m ready now and I can’t risk loosing you again before you know how I feel and how much you mean to me.”
It looked as if Patrick had more to say but was loosing the word the more choked up he got. There wasn’t even words to describe how you felt about Patrick so instead you let the drugs clouding you mind do their magic. You free hand goes to Patrick’s face and holds it like you did before, thumb brushing away a loose tear falling down his cheek.
You gently pull him towards you and with all the strength yo can muster you push yourself up to meet him half way. Your lips meet in a gentle passion that say everything neither of you know quite how to say. It’s passionate and sweet the way Patrick’s lips are gentle on yours but leave a fire in their wake none the less.
When you have to reluctantly pull away your eyes stay closed for a moment longer and when you open them you’re met with a bright blue eyes looking at you like you just rose the sun yourself and a smile that warms your heart.
“I’m sorry it took me so long,” Patrick mumbles and he’s so close his lips brush against yours with every word. You shush him before he can say anything else.
You lean back into him this time with the yearning passion that’s been building up for months. Patrick lets out a breath of relief and love as he melts into you, finally the time was right.
Thank you for replying to my question about you writing for The Mentalist.
Could I please request something with Patrick Jane dragging Reader into dancing with him and this prompt "I'm not very good at this.." "Well you've stepped on my feet at least 5 times, so trust me, I know"
Thank you and have a lovely day❤️
sorry this took so long, i hope it's what you had in mind <3

pairing: patrick jane x reader
words: 500 words (sorry she's so small, i'm having a terrible writer's block T_T)
warnings: none, we stay wholesome in this house; fic from reader's pov per usual (if you're new here hi welcome this is how we roll)
summary: Dance Dance Revolution (jk refer to ask for plot summary x)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contrary to what I had believed for most of my life, I was, apparently, a terrible dancer. I always thought I'd be decent or, like, not dying scarecrow-esque at the very least, but come the day of the undercover op, I found that my feet were suddenly sentient, and would not listen listen to me.
"God, I suck at this, don't I?"
"Well you've stepped on my feet at least 5 times, so trust me, I know"
Patrick, bless his heart, was trying his level best to keep up with the battle between me, my feet, and the ground (we were all losing badly), but he didn't even attempt to hide his amusement at my plight, which, honestly, made me want to step on his feet on purpose.
"Stop laughing, it's not funny," I tried to sound stern and argue, but noooooo, it had to come out sounding like I was desperately trying to hold back tears, as if not being able to dance was a terminal medical diagnosis.
"It's a little funny, I'll admit it-"
"Jane! I look ridiculous."
“No, no,” he said, lips twitching as he fought (and failed) to keep a straight face. “Ridiculous would imply some level of intentional absurdity. You, on the other hand, look like you’re attempting to fight the laws of physics in real-time.”
I groaned, glaring at him. “How are you so good at this?”
“Oh, it’s simple. I just listen to the music.”
I opened my mouth. Closed it. Then narrowed my eyes.
“That’s the worst advice I’ve ever heard.”
Jane sighed, like a man deeply burdened by my lack of coordination.
“You think too much.” He spun me- rude- before I could protest, catching me as I stumbled back into place. “Dancing isn’t about micromanaging every step. It’s about letting go. Trusting your partner.”
I let out a short, incredulous laugh. “You do realize I know you, right? ‘Trusting my partner’ sounds like an incredibly dangerous idea when my partner is you.”
Jane just grinned, completely unoffended. “Fair.”
And yet, despite everything- my lack of rhythm, the ongoing war with gravity, the very real possibility that I was going to need to ice his feet later- he didn’t let go. If anything, his grip shifted, just slightly, like he was actually holding onto me rather than just keeping me upright for the sake of the case.
It was subtle. Barely even a thing.
But I noticed it.
And then, because I was me, I immediately noticed that I noticed it, and my brain short-circuited for a second.
Unfortunately, Jane picked up on that, too.
The corner of his mouth quirked upward, and his eyes flickered with something- something unreadable, which was unfair because reading people was his thing, not mine.
“Relax,” he murmured, voice softer now, just between us. “I’ve got you.”
I’ve got you
He smirked, eyes glinting with amusement. And just like that, whatever almost moment had passed. Back to work. Back to the case.
Vamos a ver."
"No."
"Ella no descubrió nada. Exploraba posibilidades."
"No, estoy bien, gracias Jane."
────── · ·

"No tenías qué [ ...
Tomaste asiento junto a Van Pelt.
"Me alegra verte bien [ ...

¿Me oíste?
"Patrick... disculpa yo... no sé qué decir..."

The team was on about day seven of their most recent murder investigation, the case wasn’t anything crazy but the victim was someone of somewhat high status making the paper work hell on earth.
Rigsby and Cho had taken to an office room so they could work on their joined paper work in peace which was of course broken when a certain consultant that felt left out. Cho didn’t mind too much considering he was quite good at tuning Patrick out, poor Rigsby though.
“So how is it going with Vanpelt?” Patrick asked his coworker absent minded as he played with a quarter, flipping it through his fingers with ease. The tired agent just sighed.
“There’s nothing going on we are just coworkers-” The agent started but was cut off by the other men letting out their respective scoffs and a “bullshit.”
“Ok ok so I haven’t asked her out so what?” Rigsby was starting to get frustrated with all this big talk from Patrick he was hearing recently.
“So what? It’s been forever Rigsby you’ve gotta ask her eventually that’s what. I don’t know why you’ve even waited this long.” Patrick shook his head in thought as he teased his friend and colleague. “And after all that advice I’ve given you.” Rigsby shook his head and rolled his eyes.
“How good is your advice anyway? I haven’t seen you with a woman like ever, sure you can flirt but where’s that gotten you recently huh genius?” Rigsby exclaimed clearly annoyed from both the paper work kicking his butt and his selectively annoying friend.
Cho looked up from his papers to glance in between the agent and consultant. Patrick grasped the quarter in his hand and sat more upright in his chair.
“I’ll have you know that it’s gotten me a-” Patrick stopped himself. Trying to act nonchalant - and like he didn’t almost spill something he shouldn’t- the man laid back in his seat. “It’s gotten me many things Rigsby.” Patrick said with an innocent shrug of his shoulders.
“Wait a minute Jane, what was that?” Rigsby asks, his focus completely abandoning his paper work in turn shifting it to Patrick. Even Cho was perking his head up.
“What was what?” The blond asked and damn was he good at lying, but Rigsby was an alright detective and has known Jane for years so he kept pushing.
“You were about to say something but you didn’t.” The agent points a finger at the consultant as if he’s accusing him of an evil crime.
“What would I have even said Rigsby? You’re being foolish.” Patrick says in defense and before Rigsby can retaliate Cho cuts interrupting the conversation.
“he was about to reveal his girlfriend.” Is all the agent says like he didn’t just drop a bomb shell onto his friends. Rigsby’s face drops in shock.
“What? Jane you have a girlfriend?” The man asks in disbelief looking between an indifferent Cho and a bashful Jane. “And Cho knows about her?” Rigsby furrows his brows at the last question.
“I found out, I’m not an idiot.” Cho says, his focus already back to the papers in front of him. Rigsby on the other hand has his full body turned to the accused man.
“So who is she? And how long has this been going on? And- hey wait a minute Cho are you calling me an idiot?” Jane can’t even get a word in and hasn’t since his secret has been aired out. While the two agents bicker Jane collects himself. His team knowing isn’t a bad thing per say but he had hoped he could reveal it under different circumstances.
Jane’s voice too Rigsby’s attention away from his bickering with Cho. “Her name is Y/n I met her when we were working a case - remember that small town we had to go too a while back for the triple serial case? So I guess it’s been going on since then.” Jane wasn’t ashamed about it at all, in fact he was very proud and happy about his relationship with you. He simply wished to keep you away from this life he led at the CBI as separate from you as he could.
“Wow, really?” Rigsby asks the disbelief evident. When Jane nodded his head with a genuine smile on his face Rigsby just shook his head. “Hey I mean good for you, wait who else knows?” The agent asks his coworker. Jane just shrugged his shoulders and began playing with his coin again.
Rigsby stood up and made his way to the office door to which Cho tried calling him back considering the fact they still had work to be done. The man just waved him off making the annoyed agent turn to Jane.
“Look what you started.” Cho deadpanned making Jane chuckle a little and innocently shrug his shoulders as he too stood up to follow Rigsby. The man had found both Vanpelt and Lisbon in the main office area looking over a computer.
“Guys you’ll never believe this.” He started to which an irritated Lisbon and an interested Vanpelt look up from their work. “Jane has a girlfriend!” Rigsby exclaimed after leaving enough time for dramatic build up. The man of interest walked in right as Rigsby revealed the news.
Vanpelt smiled and looked over at Jane happily while Lisbon just looked at Rigsby as if to say “really? This is what you’re off task for?” Jane just smiled and waved Rigsby off with a bashful look on his face.
“So what?” Lisbon asks, slowly getting more and more annoyed. The other agents just ignore her in turn to focus on Jane.
“Jane really? That’s so great!” Vanpelt exclaimed happily, she was glad Jane was finding some love and friendship in his life. She worried about him sometimes. Suddenly Vanpelt let out a gasp at a good idea she just thought up.
“We have to meet her Jane!” The red head agent exclaimed happily to which Rigsby made a wide eyed look with a wicked grin and their superior just sighed while slightly shaking her head.
“You know we should, see what this is all about.” The trio watched Lisbon pick up her things and go to the office room where Cho remained. In turn Rigsby took the open spot next to Vanpelt. Jane had an unsure thinking look on his face as he shook his head.
“I don’t know,” The consultant said then hesitated, “she has been wanting to meet all of you for quite some time,” Jane was mostly thinking aloud at this point but the two agents nodded along as he spoke anyway.
“Then lets do it!” Vanpelt exclaimed, always happy to meet new people. Rigsby threw his hands up with an idea.
“How bout when we all go to dinner together after this case is done you can bring her.” The man suggested and Vanpelt made a sound of agreement. Jane, with the same sense of uncertainty as before just shrugged his shoulders as he turned towards his couch that was on the other side of the room.
“Maybe,” he said, “probably not,” Jane was walking towards his his couch now and spoke with a ‘maybe-maybe-not’ tone. “But maybe! We’ll see.” And with that the consultant plopped down on his couch happily taking in the coziness of the plush leather.
The two agents just looked at each other with the same annoyed expression but took that as their sign to get back to work. Vanpelt put her focus back on her computer and the paper work Lisbon had left behind. Rigsby begrudgingly dragged his feet back to the office where Cho and his boss worked.
A well timed buzzing caught Jane’s attention right as he was getting comfy. Pulling out his phone to check the caller ID he recognized it as you. A small smile reached the man’s face as he lazily brought his hand up to his ear, pressing answer.
“Hello dear, to what do I owe the pleasure?” Jane’s sleepy voice was static-y through the phone but you grin either way.
“Well hello to you too Patrick, I was just thinking and there’s a city band thing happening a little ways away tonight. Would you like to come with me?” You ask your boyfriend cautiously trying to hide the excitement in your voice. The date would be amazing but you didn’t want your boyfriend to feel bad in the case he couldn’t make it. Of course even if he couldn’t, he’d still go.
“That sounds amazing y/n I’d love too,” Jane spoke through a sigh, imaging how nice the date sounded. “I’m free to come home soon, boring paper work and all that needs to be done.” You chuckle and the sound makes Jane smile.
“Well then fill out the paper work faster I was hoping to maybe go somewhere for dinner too,” You teased your boyfriend, on the other line you heard him shuffle around on what you assumed was the couch he has told you about.
“Yes of course dear that sounds lovely,” Jane responded with genuine fondness in his voice. Thinking for a moment he spoke up again, “oh and uh I have some,“ he hesitated, “news.” You hum in response, urging him to go on.
“The team found out about you,” he paused, “and us.” Again, Jane wasn’t ashamed of his relationship with you at all. Under any other circumstances he’d have told his team, his family, way sooner.
But there was a fear that suffocated him every time he tried to talk about you, bring you up, or anything of the sort. But Jane loved you and needed to conjoin the two parts of his life eventually. The man could almost hear the happiness that enveloped you at his words.
“Really? That’s great!” You thought for a moment before speaking again. This time more reserved. “Isn’t it?” Jane’s heart ached a little bit, you were so interested in his team and wanted to meet them since you and him started this whole affair.
Jane nodded even though you couldn’t see him, “Yes it is a good thing.” Your boyfriend assured you and even though you could hear the reservations in his voice you knew he meant it.
“Well than when do I get to meet them?” You asked excitedly to which Patrick chuckled.
“Soon soon, never fear. After every case we have a celebratory dinner of sorts.” Jane explained. “And you have been invited to come along.” You boyfriend finished to which you gasp a little with happiness.
“That sounds great Patrick!” You exclaim, the joy bubbling up inside of you. Just then Lisbon walked into the large office room Jane was currently attempting to take a nap in.
“Hey Jane, get off your ass we need you for something.” She commanded and waved in the direction she came from with a nod of her head. Jane just sighed and groaned as he pushed himself up to instead be sitting on the couch.
“Well dear duty calls,” the man says into his phone making you pout a little.
“Aw all right if you have to go.” You voice is slow and sad as you speak which makes Jane’s heart swell two sizes bigger. “I’ll see you tonight though for dinner and the band right?” You ask before you say your goodbyes.
“Yes of course,” Jane says with a smile, “I sadly have to go now. See you tonight. I love you y/n,'“ Jane’s voice is smooth and reminds you why you swooned for him in the first place.
“Ok ok don’t let me keep you. I love you too Patrick, see you tonight!” And with that the lines dies and Jane is left to go do more soul sucking paper work that he’d trick Rigsby into doing later. The warm thought of getting to see you tonight kept him going and gave him the energy to stand up from his couch.
“Common Jane,” Lisbon says impatiently as she walks back to the office room that the rest of the team resided.
“I know I know,” Jane held his hands up in defense. When he got to the room he found it filled with his friends sitting around chatting and having fun despite their boring circumstances. The thought of getting to share you - the most important person in his life - with the people he has come to call family was enough to bring a happy smile to his face and some water to his eyes.
Summery: A Red John case rattles Jane but luckily you are there for him. This case had been hell, worse than hell. All cases connected to Red John were. Jane was being strung along like a puppet in a sick, twisted game that Red John controlled. Every time Jane thought he was close to finding out anything about him, he would be met with a dead end after dead end.
You could physically see the toll it was taking on the poor man. Jane’s eyes clouded and lost in his ever racing thoughts. His body sagged as he walked, feet dragging against the ground with every step he took. You were sure he hadn’t slept and god you were even sure he had eaten or anything of the sort for days. Jane was consumed with Red John.
Another wild goose chase was resolved for the night. If resolved meant a dead woman and that damned bloody smile painted up on a wall. Red John had taunted Jane and given him a riddle that led him to some random warehouse he was supposed to be at waiting for Jane. Of course, that wasn’t the case. Instead, a dead body was lying in its own blood, waiting for the CBI to find it.
Lisbon had called off her team. Jane was too exhausted to do anything useful and the team as a whole needed a break. They tasked you with taking care of Jane, considering your relationship with him. It wasn’t a romantic relationship per se, but the two of you were fond of each other and you liked to think it could lead to something more.
The two of you flirted and acted like a couple without the stuff that actually made you a couple of course. But you were there for Jane and he was there for you in a way no one else was. So of course you were there for him now.
The car ride was mostly silent. Jane wasn’t talking at all, too caught up in his own thoughts you weren’t even sure he knew where he was and what was going on. You were told to take him back to his house but you weren’t sure that was the best place for him to be right now.
You had been there, seen what a hollow and sad place it was. An empty vessel of what it used to be. Jane couldn’t be there right now, couldn’t see the bloody smile he still had yet to clean.
So instead, you made the executive decision to take him to your place for at least a little while until the adrenaline and shock wore off. You had asked Jane if it was ok he was getting taken to your apartment. To which he just responded with a nod and you weren’t sure he even knew what he was agreeing to, but you kept heading there anyway.
A part of you was nervous, this was a step you and he hadn’t taken before and you were honestly a little giddy at the idea of Jane being in your apartment. Though the circumstances weren’t ideal. But Jane needed you and you were more than happy to be there for him like you always were.
Jane had gotten knocked up a little bit like he always did when the case involved Red John. He was being reckless, letting himself talk freely and act however he wanted, which angered people and got himself hit. He really had to stop letting that happen. It was ruining his pretty face. Your car pulled into the parking lot for your apartment building at the early early time of two in the morning. Your poor neighbors were probably going to complain later on about the noise, but you were too tired to care.
“Jane?” You asked the man sitting next to you once you found a parking spot. Jane didn’t move. You softened your tone and reached over to put a gentle hand onto your friend’s shoulder.
“Patrick? We’re here.” The consultant snapped out of his trance for a moment to look over at you. You could see the sadness welling up in his eyes, it was paired with a raging fiery anger that you knew all too well. It was the look he always got when Red John slipped through his fingers all over again.
“I’m sorry, Patrick, but we’re gonna have to get inside now.” The man nodded and undid his seatbelt as you turned the car off and got out of the vehicle yourself. The walk to your apartment wasn’t anything to take note of. You tried to be quite the best you could, but neither of you were talking anyway so it wasn’t too hard. You fumbled with your keys for a moment, the fatigue slowing getting to you as well, but you managed to make it in.
“Well welcome to my humble abode.” You said with a care free tone, trying to lighten the mood as much as possible before getting to taking care of Jane. You walked to your kitchen, the room close to the front door. Your purse makes a soft thump when you toss it haspazerdly onto the counter along with your keys. You turn to look at Jane as he wandered in himself. He seemed to be getting back to himself as he looked around the apartment taking it all in.
“I can make something to eat and then look at fixing up your poor nose.” You say gently while Jane makes his way over to you and motions towards a seat to which you nod your head and he sits down slowly.
“I don’t need any food.” Janes voice comes out scratchy and you can tell he’s trying to hold back every emotion waiting to pour out of him.
“Yes Patrick you do. When was the last time you ate?” You ask a bit too harshly so you make a mental note to watch your tone.
“I don’t have an appetite.” Jane responds simply but you dont care, you make a move to your cabinets to look and see what you’ve got to work with.
“I’m going to make some soup for me and I might accidentally make too much and you’ll just have to help me out,” You joke but you hope Jane will eat some later anyway. Jane doesn’t say anything though he just watches as you open the can and pour it’s contents into a pot. The exhausted consultant can feel his eyes well up with the tears hes been choking back this entire night.
“Thank you Y/n.” Janes words came out more as a sob than anything else. There had been a select few times you had seen Jane cry but nothing like this. He was sobbing, you turn around to see the emotion flowing out of him in the form of tears. You rush over to him quickly forgetting about the soup on the stove to give your full attention to you poor friend.
Janes hands reach out to you and through tear filled eyes you can see whats he’s asking for. You reach out for him as well and when you get to him he grabs you in his arms tightly. The sobs wrack Jane’s entire body making him shake uncontrollably. You slowly stand him up and lead him to your couch where the two of you sit wrapped up together in a more comfortable hug.
“Y/n he was there he was right there and-” Jane tries to speak but it’s all too much and he looses the words right after they leave his mouth. You shush him softly.
“You don’t gotta say anything, just let it out, it’ll be ok,” Your voice is soft and gentle as you squeeze him in a comforting tightness.
“I’m here Patrick.” Jane stops trying to talk all together at your words just letting the pain seep away through every tear.
The two of you couldv’e been sitting there together for years and you wouldn’t even know or care. Jane held you tightly until he was either done crying or was just too tired to carry on. When the crying finally stopped Jane loosened his grip and sat back a little bit, enough to look at you.
“You’re beautiful y/n,” Jane says suddenly and fondly. “Truly you are.” The sudden shift surprises you but his words make you blush none the less. Janes eyes still wet with tears admire your face lit up from the moonlight seeping through your windows.
“Oh, well thank you Patrick.” Bashfully you rub the back of your neck while Jane shifts to let his hands hold yours instead of being wrapped around you.
“Are you blushing at that?” Jane asks and you see a tired smile slowly tug at his lips. “That’s adorable.” His voice is airy and sounds like he doesn’t even really know what he’s saying but means it nonetheless.
Janes words only fluster you more but you keep your cool, the man has done his fair share of flirting with you before. This is nothing new. The way he says it though, and the situation itself makes you almost believe what he’s saying is how he really feels.
Your thoughts are cut off when he brings one of your hands to his face. You watch as he kisses each of your knuckles slowly and carefully before turning you hand around to kiss at your palm. Jane guides your hand to his cheek as his blue eyes find yours.
Jane’s gaze is intense like a burning fire that is ready to consume you whole. That fire looks down towards your lips and back to your eyes in a passion you are scared to match.
Janes body shifted, his hand tightened it’s grip around yours and he slowly began pulling you towards him. That passion you were scared of was getting closer and closer. Janes face was inches from yours, every breath mixed with yours in an intimacy you weren’t sure you were up for. Normally this would be your dream but was Jane even in the right head space for this, was now a good time or would it just be something to regret tomorrow?
Without thinking you sprung to your feet, “Oh no I forgot about the, um soup yeah right. Well uh I’ll go get that ready and you can go, you can go get the first aid kit yeah,”
You desperately attempted to ground yourself and think of anything you could that might make the situation any less awkward than you were making it.
“Of course you wouldn’t know where it is so you can go check on the soup and I’ll get that, right I’ll go do that.” Your words were jumbled and didn’t make all that much sense but you didn’t wait to see the look on Janes face or even if he made a move to go check on the soup. Your feet were quick and steady as you rushed to your bathroom. The cool air and harsh lights hit you like a truck that you didn’t see coming.
Your chest pounded with every harsh intake of cold air that filled your lungs a little too much. What were you doing? Leaving Jane like that when he was about to kiss you. He was about to kiss you right? Or maybe coming in for another hug? But he wasn’t thinking straight anyway, he couldn’t be. Finally looking up at yourself in the mirror you saw the mess you were. Days on end of strenuous work were taking their terrible tole on you.
Splashing cold water on your face to try and get yourself to lock back in on the task at hand and actually look for the first aid kit you came into your bathroom for in the first place. You could hear a faint sound of cupboards opening and closing coming from your kitchen, closely followed by the sound of the sink turning on and off.
You took this as your sign to go see what Jane was up too, you took another deep breath. This time the air didn’t feel suffocating and you were starting to feel more like the put together CBI agent you were. All of that came crumbling down when you made it to you kitchen to see Jane putting a tea pot onto you stove next to a pot of soup. He had taken off his suit jacket and blazer which left him in a tucked in button up and dress pants.
Thoughts of what it’d be like to see this every day flooded your mind before you could stop them, this paired with the almost kiss from before was too much to bare. Jane was slowly killing you, you just knew it.
“I found your tea supply, though it was very heavily lacking Y/n, I must say I’m disappointed.” Jane shook his head in mock disappointment which mae you roll your eyes at his antics.
“I wasn’t expecting to have any tea conisurs over as guests or I would’ve stocked up.” You fire back as you set the first aid kit onto the kitchen counter. Jane stirred the soup with a spoon and fiddled with the knob until it was at a temperature he approved of.
“You think you’ve got enough time before your tea’s ready for you to visit the doctor?” You joke with him teasingly to which he smiles and leaves his post by the stove to walk over to a chair next to where you are standing and sit down.
“I always have time for you Y/n,” Patrick says sweetly which makes your stomach flutter and your face flush in a way you were hoping wouldn’t be seen in the dark lighting. To distract yourself you open up the first aid kit, Jane’s injuries weren’t anything serious.
He got hit by some guy he thought mightve been Red John but was really just a random man in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was some bruising near his eye and his nose didn’t look broken but was definitively bleeding earlier and needed to be patched up.
“Alright no whining or anything ok?” You ask Jane as you turn his direction to find him already looking at you. The way the two of you were positioned had him in a chair sitting and you standing between his legs working on fixing his poor face. The whole situation was intimate in a whole new way. Forcing yourself to focus, you cleaned his face up carefully and as best you could.
The whole time you were grabbing bandages and wiping up his wounds Jane’s eyes never left your face. Whether he was looking at your eyes or your lips he was honed in on everything you. When you first started the whole ‘patching up’ thing Jane was slowly - and with much attention on how you were reacting – put a hand on your waist. You didn’t mention it and did your best to ignore it. But the closes, the romantic ness of it all was slowly getting to you. As much as you wanted it, you couldn’t let yourself go there.
“Patrick,” You mumble while concentrated on applying a bandage to a scrap above his eye.
“Yes y/n?” Jane mutters in that same tone you used.
“Your’re staring,” You inform him as if he didn’t know what he was doing.
“Am I?” Jane asks sincerely, to which you roll your eyes.
Your voice is stern in a over dramatized sort of way, “Very much so.”
Jane sighs in a dreamy sort of way. “It’s hard not to with how pretty you are,” that makes you blush but it’s not the first time Jane has said something like that. Not even the first time tonight. So you keep your cool. That cool facade was slowly fading as that hand on your waist began rubbing the skin under it’s fingers. It was joined by another large hand meeting your opposite and lonely hip.
“Really y/n you’re gorgeous, I know you don’t believe it but I’m telling the truth.” Jane flatters you, maybe too much, but the way he was looking at you right now with that same fiery look back in his pretty blue eyes you really did believe him this time.
“Thank you Patrick,” You say and hope he knows you are being genuine. Patrick took to silence as you finished up with his face. There wasn’t too mutch work to be done so after a thorough examination of his face you catch yourself finding new little details about him you had never noticed before.
Everything about the man before you was beautiful. Jane’s curly, golden, locks that still looked perfect even after a night like this. His rosy pink lips that were always fixed in a permanent grin that annoyed you but damn did it fit Jane’s face perfectly. The curvature of his nose that has been molded from various breakages and dislocations still was pretty in its own disoriented way.
And finally the bright blue eyes that had been taunting you the whole night. Jane’s gaze drifted from your lips up to meet your eyes and it was then when you realized what you had been doing.
“Now who’s staring?” Jane asked and you knew he was starting to feel better because his teasing tone was making it’s way back into every word he spoke. Your hands held Janes face tenderly at his cheeks, your fingers unconsciously twirled a little bit of his hair.
“Am I?” You ask him, mocking what he said before. That made Jane chuckle a little bit and that damn smile that tugged at his lips made your heart ache a little.
“Very much so,” Jane responded, now light heartedly mocking you. Without realizing it the two of you were slowly leaning towards each other in a slow and caseous pace. You wanted to think that this would be ok and Jane really did feel this way about you, it wasn’t the adrenaline or his mind being clouded. But it was him. Him wanting to kiss and hug and be with you.
Your eyes fluttered shut as your head tilted to the side a little to fit with Jane like a perfect puzzle finally being completed. Your gentle hold on his face tightened as if to ground yourself in the fact he was real and all of this was real. The tightened grip on your wait helped ground you in that as well. Jane held you close and in a way that made your heart stutter the same way your breath did the closer and closer Janes lips got to yours.
Suddenly you became very aware of a deafeningly loud whistling screech coming from your stove. Of course, Janes tea. Janes tea and your soup were left unattended while you and Jane played hook up. Abruptly getting taken out of the moment your head wiped to the side so see the smoke rushing out of your old tea kettle Jane had put on the stove earlier.
You hurriedly let go of jane and rushed over to the stove, when you left the man to sit by himself you felt him try and keep you there with his hold on your waist. And maybe, just maybe, you heard him let out a little groan followed by a “Dammit”. Your hands moved quick across the stove to take the kettle and pot away from their respective burners in time for them both to not explode.
“Sorry Patrick the soup is gonna have to cool down for a while but I can get cups for the tea and-” You spoke quickly and multitasked by reaching for you cup cabinet that held your mugs. Jane cut you off though by putting a hand on your waist and pushing you in a way that had you turning around to face him.
“You have to know what you’re doing to me y/n.” Jane looked over your body and back to your face, his eyes downcast and it seemed like he was speaking more rhetorically than anything. You felt him motion for you to move away from the stove and too a safer part of your counter to lean upon.
“What do you mean?” Your tone is innocent and it just makes Patrick sigh in a tired sort of way. The consultants head comes down to rest on your shoulder.
“You must know about the affect you have on me, every day it’s like you cast a spell on me or something.” Janes talking to himself mostly and like hes thinking aloud. His face is tucked away into your shoulder as he hesitates for a moment.
“You’d tell me if you were a witch, right?” Janes asks you sincerely which makes you chuckle a bit.
“Yes Patrick I would.” You tell him with the same dramatic sincerity he had when asking the question in the first place. You hear him sigh again.
“I love when you say my name,” he pauses, “y/n.” Jane’s getting that dreamy tone back in his voice which makes you think. Everything he had been saying. About the affect you have on him and how you say his name. It’s almost like he’s been crushing on you or something. The idea makes your chest feel fuzzy and your heart beat a little faster.
Jane lifts his head to look at you, really look at you. The eye contact makes you a little nervous but you hold it anyway.
“Y/n?” Patrick asks, his gaze not leaving yours.
“Yes?” You respond.
“May I kiss you,” The man pauses, “please?” You feel every reason you had to say ‘no’ leave your body at once at that soft gentle ‘please’. You nod your head before you can even think, it wouldn’t have made any difference anyway this is what you wanted. What you needed. For what felt like forever.
“Yes Pat-” You can’t even get the word out before Jane is crashing into with a hungry passion that consumes you whole, and you let it. Suddenly everything is Jane. You can smell him, taste him, your eyes are closed but all you can see are thoughts of him. Everything is Jane and you can’t get enough.
Janes needy but steady hands grab your waist tightly as you reach up to hold his face in your palms just to get that much more of him. Your back arches against him as your hands find their way from his face to his hair that is much easier to cling to. The kiss is burning with a fiery passion you’ve been avoiding all night but you were finally getting a taste of it and you couldn’t get enough. The rhythm of everything was uneven and rough but neither of you cared. It was a perfect collision of you and Jane and god did you love it.
A dull tingle in your lungs reminded you that the kiss couldn’t last forever and eventually you’d have to part ways if even for a second. When you reluctantly pulled away when the lack of oxygen was too much there jane was again, following your lips as if he was a starving man that only need you. You were inclined to let Jane devour you right then but you turned your face to the side instead making him peck your cheek.
Both you and Jane were panting, chests rising and falling in the same shared rhythm. You were close enough to him that you shared the same air, now even that was Jane and you didn’t mind at all. The two of you didn’t say anything for a while, basking in the calm silence together. Until Jane broke that calm.
“You know I’ve wanted to do that for quite some time now.” He says matter a factly. To which you just chuckle and blush at his confession.
“Really?” You ask, trying to mask the giddy tone infecting your voice.
“Really.” Jane confirms. And then it’s just the two of you again. In a comfortable unmoving silence. You rest your back against your counter top and were brought back to where you were and what the situation was. After a minute of thinking you speak up.
“Patrick?” You ask the man still holding you like you were his life line. He hums in acknowledgement. You hesitate before taking a deep breathe and continuing.
“What does this all,” You pause, “mean to you?” The question sounds dumb the second it is out in the open but you know Jane knows what you’re trying to say and is willing to hear you out. The silence that follows your question is slowly sucking your soul away but you wait for Jane to respond none the less.
“Ever since my wife and daughter were murdered I haven’t really felt love like that again.” Jane started then stopped. You didn’t say anything, instead gave him time to think.
“Its lonely but I let this life of solitude and endless crime solving in the pursuit of revenge consume me,” Jane pauses, “And I try to let that be all I am but ever since you came along everything has been different. I’ve been different.” The man in front of you was on an endless train of thought you were letting him get it all out as you listened.
“My life is more than what it was before. I’m happier and better and y/n I,” Jane stops himself not letting him say what he’s been trying to say to you for the longest time.
“Y/n I love you and it scares me. The woman I love was killed because of me, and with that monster still out there how can I let myself love someone else?” The confession shakes you to your core. Jane had just confessed he loved you, like really loved you. His eyes were downcast but you saw the sadness filling back into them with every word he spoke. Your hand reached up to hold his face and guide it to look at you.
“Oh Patrick,” You sigh, “it scares me too. But you’re a different man than before. You’ve grown and changed and are a better man who will catch that monster one day. But why do that alone?” You try to find the best words that will help comfort him and when thinking doesn’t help you choose to just speak from the heart.
“I love you Patrick and I am here for you and I want to help you find that monster so you can live and love freely without fear. I want to be with you for who you are and what you do, and that doesn’t scare me at all.” Your confession makes Jane smile, it’s a sad tired smile that holds hope in it.
“Thank you y/n, for everything. I wouldn’t be here without you.” Jane is getting that dreamy look in his eyes as he admire everything that is you.
“Of course,” You respond with a calm, gentle smile.
The two of you stand together in silence just taking in all that had happened that night and what it meant for your future. Patrick began to move from his position to the cabinet you were reaching for for mugs before the whole kiss and confession thing happened.
“What’re you doing?” You asked confused. Jane looks at you with the same expression.
“The tea is at perfect temperature, You think I was going to let this go to waste?” Jane grabs two random mugs and the still semi warm kettle. He begins pouring the tea into each mug with a practiced pression . You just role your eyes and shake your head at Janes antics that you were used to by now.
Patrick?” You call to him as makes his way over to your couch with the two mugs of tea.
“yeah?” Jane responds.
“I love you.” You say simply. The words are foreign but feel comfortable finally being able to say them out loud to the man you’ve been wanting to say them to forever.
Jane smiles at you with the most warmth and pure happiness you’ve ever seen from him. “I love you too y/n.”

You and the rest of your team watched as Lisbon and Patrick walked out of Minelli’s office, and down the stairs, and to your desk area. Of course all meetings with your boss didn’t usually end in your teams favor but this felt different, something was wrong.
You, Vanpelt, Rigsby, and Cho all stand up around the same time eagerly awaiting what Lisbon had to fill you all in on. Expectantly you waited for her to tell you what was what, Cho and Rigsby stood next to you while you leaned against the desk Vanpelt sat at.
“We’re off Red John.” Lisbon said and out of everything you had expected her to say that wasn’t it. Your team collectively started talking over each other in retaliation. “Quiet.” Your boss had a stern voice that hushed everyone quickly.
“It’s my fault,” she started, “It’s a wake up call for all of us. We’ve grown slack and unprofessional.” Lisbon looked at you and your team mates as she spoke and you could feel the seriousness flowing through every word.
“We need to earn back the trust that we’ve lost.” As your boss spoke Patrick finally made an appearance from where ever he had wandered off too. Without acknowledging him, Lisbon continued.
“From now on we work one hundred percent straight. No more short cuts no more-” Behind Lisbon, Patrick was putting away the things on his disorganized desk into a box. It had caught the attention of everyone on the team and now Lisbon too. “What are you doing, you leaving?” Lisbon more demanded than asked the consultant who just perked his head up.
“Well frankly if I can’t use this job to seek some kind of personal revenge then uh,” Patrick paused and looked around at his team mates, it felt personal when he spent a few extra moments of hesitation staring at you. “There’s not a whole lot here for me.” Patrick said with a shrug of his shoulders but it felt much more like a punch to the gut.
How could he even say that? Was your friendship and the bond you had built here just nothing? You went to say something, anger bubbling in your throat but Patrick continued. “I don’t make anything better,” Patrick explained, “I can’t bring people back to life. What good do we do?” Patrick asked the group.
Now you really were upset, Patrick always had a different idea of what you were doing here at the CBI than you or the team did. You spoke up before the others. “We bring people to justice and stop them from hurting more people.” Vanpelt nods like she was going to say something similar.
You hear Patrick let out a “Justice” under his breath followed but a chuckle and shake of his head. There are many times you feel like punching Patrick in the face but this trumps all of that.
“Hows that been going lately?” Patrick asks as he looks up from his box. You go to say something but Cho cuts in.
“We put bad guys away where they can’t hurt people.” His voice is usually void of emotion but you can hear the anger he has for how Patrick views the job in every word. “That’s good enough.” Cho has a sort of ‘final say’ vibe when he talks that makes everything he says carry a whole lot more weight.
Patrick waves him off and shakes his head, “Ah yeah I was doing more good as a psychic.” You see the way every ones demeanor shift, Patrick could be a real dick sometimes. “I was giving people hope at least.” The man waved a finger in the air as he spoke and bent down to grab a book off his desk. “False hope but hope anyway.”
Before the team can react in a mix of offense and hurt, Vanpelt gets a call. That gives reason enough for everyone to split to their respective corners of the room, except you that is. You and Patrick had a connection, or at least you thought you did. You and the consultant were friends and you at least thought he valued you and the team a bit more than he’s acting like he did. You understand the importance of Red John and the case to him but there were other things of importance in this world.
“Do you really think that?” You ask as you move away from Vanpelt’s desk to instead get in Patrick’s space. Behind you Rigsby and Cho give each other a look before Lisbon tells them to get ready to leave. “All that stuff about our jobs just being useless.” You finish.
“Now that’s not what I said.” Patrick explained while looking at some of the things on his desk. “I think that what the we do just stops a problem. We don’t fix anything we just bring an end to something bad and at the end of the day what does that do?” You give Patrick an offended look that he just waves off.
“You know what.” You say while your team files out behind you. You try to find the words but everything you have to say is wildly unprofessional or make you found like you care much more about Patrick then he cares about you. And god does that hurt to think. “Have fun being a full time fraud while we can go back to our small little jobs here.”
With that and a “Let’s go” from Lisbon you grab your phone and keys from the desk behind you and leave. You leave Patrick. You can hear him behind you and it sounds as if he was going to say something but you pay no mind and keep going. If he wasnts to leave this all behind so he can play shrink then why should you even care?
You’re a bit behind your team when you make it outside theyre filling into a van already. Lisbon rolls down her window. “Don’t let Jane bother you he's just an asshole.” You shake your head, eyes darting away because you know Lisbon’s a good enough detective to know what the look in your eyes means.
“Yeah I know wish he was a bit more subtle about it tho,” You hear a chuckle from Rigsby in the back seat which helps lighten your mood a little bit.
“Alright, we need you to take a second car in case we need to split up,” Your boss informs you of your duties to which you nod. “We’ll fill you in when we get there.”
“Yes boss,” and with that Lisbon rolls up her window and you turn to find the secondary vehicle you have for this type of situation. It doesn’t take long for the rest of your team to pull out, honestly you usually hated egtting put in the second car but this would be a good time to think everything over at least.
Patrick just always had to be so difficult and you put up with it everytime but he crossed a line talking about the job like that and just being ready to throw it all away like that. You had been mindlessly going through the motions of pulling up the address on your phone, starting the car, getting your seat belt on, etc etc. A sudden knock on the passenger side window pulled you out of your thoughts.
The knock belonged to the one and annoying Patrick Jane. When your eyes met through the rolled up window he smiled and made a motion towards the door handle signilling he wanted it open. Reluctantly, and you aren’t even sure why you did, you unlocked the door with a sigh.
“Hello Y/l/n,” Patrick said cheerfully as he settled in the passenger side seat and secured his seatbelt across his waist. “Where we off too?” The consultant, or ex-consultant, or whatever, asked curousily and it took everything out of you to not strangle him right then and there.
“The hell are you talking about Jane? You quit just to turn around and come to the crime scene with us?” You ask as the anger bubbles up threatening to spill over more than it already was. “I mean really who does that?” You say rehtorically before Patrick can answer your first set of questions.
Despite how you feel you pull put the parking lot anyway. “Well I couldn’t just leave you guys like that, you need me.” Patrick spoke as if it was the simplest concept in the world and didn’t just insulte your entire team. You chuckle at the audasity.
“Oh really? Thats what you think of all of us?” You ask gripping the steering wheel tighter. You couldn’t believe what Patrick was saying, sure you knew he was prideful and didn’t care what people thought most of the time it still hurt to find out he thinks so lowly of all of you.
“Of course I think you’re all very competent detectives but I’m what solves cases you know?” Patrick explains his thought process to you and maybe the backhanded compliment was ment to smooth things over with you but it wasn’t working by any means.
“Right.” You say, maybe it was all the frustration but angry tears were welling in your eyes as you drove. “If you just think we’re all living in Patrick Jane land I assure you we are not. You are just some asshole who doesn’t care about people.” Once the words start flowing out of you they don’t stop. And you don’t dare look over at Jane while you drive and talk beacuse the tears start flowing too.
“So what we lost the Red John case? It’ll probably be good for you to get away from it all. I can- we can see the way it’s destroying you Patrick.” It’s like word vomit that you start to choke on as it comes out. “We care about you Patrick so maybe stop being such a dick and just leave if thats what you want to do.”
Once you finally get what you needed to say out of your system the tears come to a halt and you can finally breathe again. But you can also think clearly again and can realize what you had just been saying. Dread washes over you like a flood.
“Jane I didn’t-” You start but Patrick cuts you off.
“I’m sorry Y/n,” He says looking over at you and while you’re too focused on the road ahead you don’t catch the look in his eyes. “I’m sorry for how I act it’s not,” Patrick hesitates, “It’s not fair to you or the team.” You want to say something but it’s patrick’s turn to talk now and he’s not letting you take it from him.
“I do care about you, all of you. I’m not leaving the team, I didn’t mean al that I just needed to feel like I’m above Red John but at the end of the day I’m not.” You sigh a breath of relief, Patrick wasn’t leaving.
“You are above Red John, you don’t need to be a dick about it though.” You say, a hand going up to your face to wipe a stray tear away. Avoiding the embarassment you feel about crying infront of your colleauge and friend you find something else to say.
“I’m glad you’re staying though,” You say sincerely and wiht a bit more love for the man you wanted to show, “And not because we need you to solve cases. We can do that fine on our own.” You joke with him to lighten the mood and hopefully make him forget about how sappy you sounded for a minute there.
A hummored hum comes from the not-ex-consultant and youcan finally feel yourself realx. Yours and Patricks relationship was an interesting one to say the least, you were friends but you wished to cultivate your connection into something more. When he said he was leaving you worried youd never get the chance to have an actual relationship with Patrick but here he was.
Thee rest of the car ride was quiet in a calm warm way. Sometime throughout the drive you had taken a hand off the wheel in relaxation and Patrick had taken that hand in his gently. Neither of you said anything, eyes staying on the road ahead, but when he squeezed your hand you knew what he was trying to say.

Never in your life did you expect something like this to happen in your small little town. But of course that how it happens. No one expects to turn up dead and when it happens it shakes the whole town. He CBI, whoever that is, was coming around town investigating anything and everyone.
You didn’t really have any part in anything, didn’t even know the victim. Well not really, everyone knew everyone to some degree. You hadn’t even thought the CBI would want any part in talking to you but the victim apparently had come by the diner you worked at before she died. Now the owner was being talked to by a woman with dark brown hair and a serious look stuck on her face. The man with her was quite the opposite though. There was a permanent smile plastered on his face it seemed genuine enough though, his blond hair was striking and beautiful.
The man didn’t seem too interested in the conversation happening though. He was walking all over the place and hadn’t sat down or asked a question once. Your boss, who was being questioned, told the staff to keep working like normal but you didn’t have nay tables so you just sat around doing some small tasks.
You hadn’t realized you were staring till you met the blond mans eyes and he gave you a small smirk. Your eyes were immediately diverted away from him, embarrassed to be caught. Dread slowly washed over you as the sound of his foot steps coming closer and closer reached your ears.
“Hello,” the man said simply as he found a spot near you to stand. You didn’t meet his eyes just nodded a little.
“Hello.” You said back, short and with a quiet voice. You were never good with interactions lie this, let alone ones with CBI agents. The man looked behind him to his colleague and then back to you.
“I’m Patrick Jane I’m with the CBI,” the man you now know as Patrick Jane introduced himself and paused. “You know I am with the CBI but I’m not an agent so don’t let that intimidate you.” Patrick finished.
You sigh a little, “then what are you?” You ask, still not meeting his intense gaze.
“I’m a consultant, I just help out.” Patrick explained with a shrug of his shoulders. You watched him lean against the counter you were standing at. You sigh a little when you realize he was planning to be there for a while.
“What’s your name?” Patrick asks curiously. You look up at him for the first time and notice his striking blue eyes are intently fixated on you. It makes you blush a little at all the attention Patrick was giving you.
“I’m just y/n,” You say. It felt a little silly that an agent - scratch that - a consultant was taking so much time on you. Maybe he was just bored, he seemed bored.
“Well ‘Just y/n’ do you know about the girl who was murdered?” The consultant made quotation marks with his fingers when he mocked what you said. The teasing tone in his voice and the smile you saw on his face when you looked up from what you were doing told you he was just joking.
“No I don’t really know people like that, I mean I knew who she was but,” you paused before you could keep scrambling. “I don’t know, I don’t know many people at all. And she definitely didn’t know me.” Is all you say.
You needed Patrick to hurry up with all this because your current task was almost all up and then you wouldn’t have anything to focus on and take your attention away from the man next to you. Patrick nods along as you speak even though it’s practically incoherent.
“I see,” The consultant says, “Why is that?” Patrick asks as if he’s genuinely curious. It makes you chuckle, the absurdity of the question.
“Well I’m not really that big of a people person for starters.” You respond and Patrick hums in acknowledgment but he just shakes his head. “What?’ You ask, glancing over at him.
“No ones a ‘people person’, not really. There’s a secret to being out going and a ‘people person’.” Patrick explained, his hands waving around as he spoke. You just scoff a little under your breath.
“I guess.” You say, used to people telling you things about having to be out going and just getting ‘out of your shell’ which was stupid.
“You don’t believe me.” Patrick said looking over at you with that same intense stare as before.
“It’s not that I don’t believe you but I’ve been told stuff lie that my whole life. This is just who I am.” You said, gaining a little courage from your annoyance with the man.
“So you don’t want to know the secret?” Patrick asks ,with a cunning smile plastered on his face.
You sigh, “Sure why not, what is it?” you ask as your shoulders slump as you turn your body a little to look over at the consultant who had a mischievous loo on his face.
“Well I can’t just tell you. How about you show me where a good diner is around here and we can get lunch.” You blush a little and look away shaking your head.
“I don’t know-” You start but Patrick cuts you off quickly.
“Why not?” The man asks and you don’t have a good reason not too. You stumble over your words for a second trying to thin up an excuse but yours and Patrick’s attention is caught by the agents calling Patrick’s name.
“Jane we gotta head out. Now.” The woman says, waving at the door as she walks out. The man made a face of acknowledgment and stood up straight fixing his coat.
“Well that’s my cue to leave, I’ll be back here tomorrow for lunch and we can find somewhere to eat. Yeah?” Patrick asks as he slowly makes his way to the door.
“I uh, yeah I guess but-” you scramble to find the right thing to say but eventually just give in. The bright smile that floods Patrick’s face is enough to make you blush and turn your head away.
“See you then y/n!” Patrick exclaims with a wave goodbye, and happily jogs to follow his partner through the door.

“Do you even know how to make coffee? Really do you? Because this tastes like shit and not what I payed for!” The man before you was an angry customer going on and on and on about everything in the world it felt like.
He was mad about the wait time on his drink, even though he waited a reasonable amount of time. He was angry about how it tasted, even though you gave him exactly what he ordered. He was even angry about your customer service.
Throughout all the yelling, in a luckily pretty much empty cafe, you tried your hardest not to let the insults get to you, but your patients were getting thin.
“And damn can you not spare me a fucking smile after I gave you such a nice tip? All you bitches are the same I swear to god.” Thats what really got under your skin. The tears welling in your eyes were barely choked back enough for you to speak.
“Sir I’m sorry but-” You were cute off by a voice speaking out from behind the angry customer in front of you.
“Excuse me,” the voice spoke and you immediately recognized who it was. Paired with the blond curls poking out from behind the mans shoulders proved it was none other then Patrick Jane himself. You hadn’t even noticed he had come in because of the angry customer who preoccupied your attention.
Speaking of which, he turned around with an annoyed and confused expression only to find Patrick standing behind him with his hands in his pockets and a sour but calm look on his face.
“What?” The mans voice went up a decibel if that was even possible, he was mad that anyone was bothering him and interrupting his harassment time.
“I’d just like to ask you how you get off talking to her that way? What has she done to you other than provide you with excellent service?” Patrick asked the man in a retorhical sort of way, his voice was the most serious you had ever heard it. You watched as the man’s shoulders slouched a little and the puff in his chest deflated a bit.
“Hows your relationship with your mother? Bad huh? Must be considering this is how you treat a random woman you don’t even know.” Patrick just kept going, he was talking fast and held himself with such confidence there was no cutting in and denying what he was saying.
“Now listen to me you are a small, pathetic fool who needs to put women down just to feel like you’re a man which by your standards I’d say you weren’t.” Patrick looked the man up and down as he insulted him, it was as if he could see right through him and saw every flaw that made him the way he was now.
“Now you listen here asshole-” The angry customer started in defense of himself but Patrick held a hand up and cut him off.
“No now you listen here asshole, you will apologize to Miss. Y/n about what you have said about her and you will tell her the drink she made for you is fantastic. And then you will turn around and walk right out that door do you understand?” Patrick practically commanded him. His blue eyes were baring into the man he was demanding an apology from as if he had cast a spell on him.
Nevertheless the man turned around and looked at you, he shared the same shocked expression you were wearing yourself. His was much more ashamed though.
“I’m sorry about yelling at you and all that.” The customer’s voice was low and embarrassed, his eyes darted around to see if anyone was looking at him which of course the like five people in the shop were because this was the only thing interesting happening in the whole cafe.
“And?” Patrick encouraged him with a nod to you. The man rolled his eyes and sighed.
“And the drink is…” He looked over at Patrick with a look that said ‘you really gonna make me say that’ and of course that answer was yes.
“Fantastic.” The blond consultant finished for him. With a smiled that seemed fake but you knew it was at least some what genuine because Patrick was a proud man and he was proud of himself for this.
“Right fantastic.” The not-so-angry-anymore customer rolled his eyes at the word and turned to walk away. You heard him mumble some curses under his breath that didn’t go unnoticed by Patrick you were sure but his focus was now on you.
“Hello Y/n,” Patricks voice was cheery and a direct opposite from the cold harsh tone he held when talking to the man from before.
“Hey Patrick,” You spoke still a little shaken up from the prior events, “thank you so much for that. Really thank you that was incredible.” Your gratefulness for Patrick saving you was dripping from every word. A bashful smile reached his face and he just waved the compliment off.
“Oh it was nothing really he was a jerk who needed put in his place that’s all.” He said but the little blush you could see tinting his cheeks confirmed he was happy with himself.
“I’m not too good when it comes to the whole ‘de-escelation’ thing with bad customers.” You said rubbing the back of your neck a little.
“It’s easy once you get the hang out it.” Patrick told you.
“Yeah says the CBI agent-” you spoke but patrick waved a finger in the air to which you roll your eyes, “right consultant. But still you’ve gotta deal with that kinda stuff all the time.” He was always so adamant about you remembering the ‘consultant’ part of his job.
“You don’t know the half of it. I make people quite angry when I’m in the feild.” Patrick admits and it makes you laugh.
“I can imagine.” You say through a chuckle. Patrick was coming in sort of on the regular ever since he came in for the first time a couple weeks ago. He’d pop in every few days to get coffee for his coworkers, which you found out work at the CBI, and tea for him. The two of you were becoming sort of friends but on a more shallow level than you would’ve liked.
You were fond of Patrick, very fond of him. And he seemed to be fond of you as well, at least you hoped. He was caring and funny and oh so nice to you as he proved only minutes before. Patrick told you about his work with the CBI and you told him about how you were in your lasts years of college just about to get your last degree before you were out in the world for good. The blond consultant was interested in what you had to say which was one of the best feelings in the world. All of your interactions with him were on a base level though considering the situation the two of you were in. You a barista, and Patrick a customer. What you wouldn’t give to really get to know him.
“What will you be having today Patrick?” You asked him, your hands reaching for the iPad you used to take orders. A smile was finally reaching your face which was two seconds away from crying just a bit ago. How Patrick was able to shift the mood of a room so quick you’d never know.
“Oh I don’t know, my coworkers don’t need anything so it’s just tea for me today.” He said, he didn’t need to look at a menu anymore from coming in so often. Though you suspected he had some sort of an eidetic memory from how quick he was to learning things.
“Oh I know!” You exclaimed excitedly, “We got a new tea order in, just this friday so it’s new to the menu. I’m sure you’ll love it!” You had been waiting for Patrick to come in for a couple days now because of the new order. The man smiled at you enthusiasm, his lips curling up in a cute little grin.
“Well if you’re so sure then I’ve got to have it, a large please.” Patrick told you as you input his order into the iPad and reached over for a cup.
“Oh and no reading my mind to figure out what it is, it’s a surprise!” You jokingly pointed your finger at him accusingly to which he put his hands up in defense.
“You have my word.” Is all he said with a smile. As you wrote on his cup - ‘Secret tea ;)’ – you got to thinking.
“Have you ever been surprised before Patrick? Like really?” You ask the consultant, you watch as he thinks to himself for a moment before shaking his head no.
“Not really, I mean little things yes but it’s very easy to tell when people are lying,” Patrick said and then leaned in close and looking around as if he was about to tell you some big secret, “most people are bad liars which makes them bad at hiding something.” Patrick grinned like he was the smartest person on the planet which you were inclined to believe.
“Maybe you’re just good at finding out the truth?” You prompted to which he shook his head.
“No no, people are bad liars.” Patrick says very sure of himself.
“Well you must be fun to play two truths and a lie with huh?” You joke with him while turning around to set the cup behind you for later.
“Wouldn’t know. Never played.” Patrick said simply to which you dramatically – over dramatically – gasp at.
“Really? I mean not too surprising since you’re you but wow.” You say mostly thinking aloud till you are struck with a very bright idea.
“We should play!” You exclaim, the excitement evident in your cheery voice. Patrick’s face imitated your excitement with a smile and he shrugged his shoulder.
“Sure why not, I’m not busy.” Is all he said making you clap you hands together a little before quickly finishing out his order on the iPad so you could get to steaming Patrick’s tea.
“Ok let me go make this I’ll be right back,” You inform the blond before turning around to grab the set aside cup and hurry off to the tea brewing station.
“Don’t go anywhere!” You call behind you as you rush off out of sight. Patrick smiles and waves you away. The blond walked over off to the side and out of the way, it was a comfy little spot with a armchair. It was now that Patrick was choosing to stop being blissfully unaware of the buzzing happening in his pocket. Of course. Missed calls from the one and only Rigsby. Patrick picked up the phone.
“Hello,” The consultant said simply.
“‘Hello’? ‘Hello’, really Jane? Where are you? Lisbon wanted to head out to that Johnson guy’s house like twenty minutes ago and you just disappeared.” Rigsby spoke quick and upset to which Patrick assumed his dear team leader Lisbon had been giving the poor agent a hard time. Considering the fact he was supposed to be watching – more like babysitting – Jane for the afternoon it made sense.
“I’m getting tea, is that not allowed?” Jane asked, his voice offended as if he was getting accused of something horrible.
“Tea? Oh my god Jane we have some here I swear to god I just restocked cuz of that stupid bet I lost.” Rigsby sighed heavily and Patrick could basically see him shaking his head at the consultants antics.
“It was important,” Patrick spoke while looking over his shoulder. He saw you. You were putting unknown tea leafs into a steamer with utmost care and filling it was hot water with the perfect amount.
“How is tea important-” Rigsby asked but cut himself off, “oh I know what this is. You’re visiting your little cafe crush huh?” Rigsby laughed to himself but his words caught the attention of a certain redhead.
“Jane has a crush?” Vanpelt asks, her head suddenly poking up from her computer in interest. Rigsby looked behind him and with a smirk he put his phone on speaker.
“You don’t know? Jane’s been going off to some cafe so he can flirt with the barista.” Rigsby teased Patrick with a wicked grin and a small chuckle obviously amused with himself. Vanpelt rolled her chair around so she could be close enough to her colleagues phone to both hear and speak.
“Jane really? That’s cute who is she?” Vanpelt had a much more innocent interest in the topic then Rigsby did. Through all of this Patrick just sighed and rolled his eyes at his coworkers. His eyes still fixated on you as you worked. He could see that you were seconds away from being done so he had to wrap this up quick.
“I’ll tell you all about it later Vanpelt but I think something more interesting is the crush Rigsby had on-” Patrick starts to say but is very quickly cut off by being taken off speaker by a now flustered and nervous Agent. The more confused agent Vanpelt just give her colleague a weird look and rolls back over to her desk now that the conversation is back to being between Rigsby and Jane.
“Not cool Jane.” The flusstered Rigsby mumbles into his phone. “Just be back soon ok?”
“Yeah yeah I’m about to play two truths and a lie I’ll be back in a bit.” Jane tell his colleague and with that he hangs up the phone and puts it back into his pocket. It was just in time, you were bringing over Patrick’s large tea with a big smile of your face.
“It’s really hot so give it a second to cool down ok?” You tell his as you set it down on the little side table next to his chair.
“Thank you y/n it smells very nice.” Patrick thanks you with a smile and a nod.
“Ok you wanna go first or me?” You ask him as you lean against the sides of one of the other armchairs near Patrick. The man just waves his hand in the air.
“You go first, show me how it’s done and all that.” Patrick said, clearly amused. You think for a second before nodding.
“Ok ok give me a moment to think of something good.” Every possible fact about you crosses your mind but you either have told Patrick about it or it’s something that’d be too easy to catch.
“Ok I’m ready, One: I legally changed my middle name to what it is now because I hated what it was before. Two: I once tried to do acting and I acted in this really low budget film that never got released. And three: I’ve broken fifteen bones.” You came up with a lie that was very close to the truth and hoped that wasn’t cheating. Because you had broken fourteen bones not fifteen. Patrick hummed as he thought, his brows furrowed together in concentration.
“You haven’t broken fifteen bones it was actually,” he paused and thought for a moment, “fourteen bones.” The man leaned back with a proud, smug look on his face. It was a stark contrast to the shocked expression you wore.
“Wow Patrick you’re good.” You were surprised, genuinely surprised. You kinda thought of yourself as a good lair but I guess you never know.
“Don’t worry you’re a decent liar but this is kinda what I do for a living,”Patrick just shrugged his shoulders like it was the chillest thing in the world.
“Whatever,” you say, “You’re turn.” You shifted the weight in your feet as you patiently waited for Jane to answer.
“Hm well One,” He held up a singular finger, “I have the phone number of a known mob boss on my phone.” Patrick spoke casually like he didn’t drop a bomb on you.
“Two,” another finger, “I I have an intense irrational fear of water.” Patrick said.
“And three,” a third and final finger went up, “I grew up in the circus.” The blond consultant finished off and got comfortable in his chair with his cooled off tea ready to watch you think about what he’s said.
You on the other hand were at a total loss, racking through your head for any sort of trick you could use to figure out what was the lie.
“Well I don’t think it’s the one about the mob boss, while it’s concerning I think it’s too crazy and is just something you said to throw me off.” YOu spoke aloud, tapping your foot on the ground in concentration.
“Good good,” Patrick complimented you as he took a sip of his tea. He hummed in happiness, “Oh now this is very good. Great suggestion y/n” Patrick went back in for another sip. Even though it was just a compliment about tea it still made you blush a little at all the praise.
“Thank you but stop you’re distracting me,” You accused him, the man put up his hands in surrender. You thought a little bit more.
“I feel like you being in the circus is fitting. you could’ve been a psychic act of something like that.” Ok I’m locking in my answer, you don’t have a fear of the water.” You spoke confidently and watched as Patrick’s face brightened.
“You’re right! Look at you, practically a psychic yourself.” Patrick exclaimed happily, your mouth drops open a little in surprise but you clap your hands together anyway.
“Really? Wow I wasn’t expecting to be correct,” You state, you were a little proud of yourself you gotta admit.
“Wait a minute, a mob boss? Really?” You ask Patrick in disbelief to which he just shrugs his shoulder and puts this look on his face that says he’s innocent. Before either of you can say anything else the door is swinging open with new customers that you’re forced to acknowledge.
“One sec Patrick,” you say to your friend before greeting the new customers. It was now Patricks turn to once again pull out his phone and call back Rigsby.
“Hello?” The consultant says simply, the same way he did last time. He takes a sip of his tea.
“Jane you need to get back here like now. Lisbon is getting pissed and I’m the one taking the blow here.” Rigsby’s tone was different this time around, it was more like he was pleading with Jane than anything else.
“Ok ok give me like five minutes I’ll get to leaving now.” Patrick says goodbye to his colleague and hangs up the phone reluctantly. Slowly the man gets up and grabs his tea making his way over to the register to say farewell to you before leaving. You’re just finishing up with the new customers as he gets up there.
“You heading out Patrick?” You ask while looking at the cups you set out to see what you needed to prep.
“Yup duty calls,” The consultant nods his head and takes a step towards the door. “Good bye y/n, see you next time.” Patrick takes a step through the door waving goodbye to you.
“Bye Patrick come back soon!” You call out to him as he leaves.
“Thanks for the tea,” The man smiles at you.
“Anytime!” And with that he’s gone and you’re left with the same longing ache in your chest you always feel every time he leaves. Oh well what’re you gonna do. You are a barista. And Patricks the customer. Maybe one day.
Bonus!!!
You were still looking out the window of the cafe deep in thought when you heard the sweet hoarse voice of an old lady behind you.
“It’s so sweet of your boyfriend to come in and see you dear!” You hear the lady exclaim happily. You feel your cheeks flush red at her words. You quickly turn around.
“Oh Mrs. Cathy Patrick isn’t my boyfriend he’s just a friend!” You wave your hands up as you desperately try to defend yourself against your regular’s teasing. She’s just a sweet old lady but boy does she have the whole situation all mixed up.
“I know when a boy likes a girl, believe me I was quite the heartbreaker back in the day deary.” Mrs. Cathy waved a finger at you as she made her way to the door.
“I bet you were Mrs. Cathy but you still got it all wrong with Patrick.” You say but your voice was getting a little less confident.
