#the saint #the effete angler #1962 #leslie charteris #itc #anthony bushell #Norman Borisoff #roger moore #shirley eaton #george pravda #patrick mcalinney #paul stassino #jack gwillim #roland brand #kevin scott #gladys taylor #ronald wilson #after a couple of strong episodes im sorry to say we hit a dip with this one; it livens up a little once the wonderful George Pravda and #Paul Stassino arrive on the scene (two long time favourites); but before that it's really a bit of a slog‚ as Simon spends his time in #Miami trying to rent a boat and objectifying women. once he gets the boat there's an interminably lengthy fishing sequence which #nearly kills the episode before the plot has really begun. oh we also get our second gratuitous bath scene so far! (i really wouldn't have #included the image except that it's a pretty neat BTS photo). once the fishing is done we get a minor smuggling mystery #it's fine‚ nothing very new or different‚ but this suffers simply from having Simon be pretty unlikeable throughout. the way he talks to #Shirley Eaton's character at times is pretty gross‚ and what was i suppose meant to be flirtatious often comes off as just a little creepy #Pravda's enjoyably agitated bad guy makes up for it a little‚ but considering this is a pretty low stakes case of smuggling it's weird #and kind of off putting just how hard Simon goes into Saint mode. i mean yeesh he had a very different view of smuggling in #the second episode‚ where he considered it a pretty minor issue in the grand scheme of things; here he's going out of his way to get #involved and bring 'justice' to those he deems deserving. chill out Simon. you're on holiday ffs.

"You know what the worst thing with coming in the nick is? Leaving it. You're sent out with a dollar or three half a crowns. My first time, I had one and threepence. So you're scratching already, you got nothing. Supposing you did have a job to go to, your gear shouts ex-con. Once you start tapping fags and sneaking looks at other people's sandwiches, it don't take 'em long to fit you in, dead right. Then you can collect your old picture cards and get back to the Palace of Varieties, the old Labour Exchange - you're free for work again. But where? And at what? So the whip cracks fair, don't it? Well, it cracks."

#the pot carriers #1962 #british cinema #peter graham scott #t. j. morrison #mike watts #ronald fraser #paul massie #carole lesley #dennis price #paul rogers #davy kaye #eddie byrne #campbell singer #alfred burke #patrick mcalinney #neil mccarthy #vanda godsell #david davies #norman chappell #stanley black #adapted from a well received ITV play of the week (the archive status of which I've been unable to determine) with Fraser recreating his #leading role (the only time in his career‚ in fact‚ that he had top billing). social realism meets light 60s comedy drama but never quite #nails either: not funny enough to be really comic‚ nor sincere enough for the social commentary. there is one scene‚ slap in the middle‚ in #which Fraser lays out his philosophy on prison life (and from where the title is drawn) which is just a brilliant bit of dramatoc writing‚#a searing indictment of a judicial process more interested in punishment than rehabilitation. unfortunately this drum beating doesn't #extend to the rest of the film. regardless this is a fun enough little film‚ stuffed full of brit character actor faves. unsurprisingly the #main draw for me was Alfie B‚ who's superbly slimy as a tobacco 'baron'‚ but Dennis Price (having altogether too much fun in a brief turn #as a conman turned chef) and Eddie Byrne as the hard but perceptive prison guard both add great value too.#this is no deconstruction of the prison system‚ but it's a fun enough bit of early 60s drama and it looks beautiful in network's new blu

Its a rare example of #Inter referencing in these filmed episodes (one of the main things I've missed thinking about it). The ep itself is standard protection of #Visiting dignitary. The holidaying fella is good old Ken Warren playing a South African bigwig on business in the UK. Cue some slightly #Uncomfortable scenes in which Haggerty warns off black protestors of apartheid in a heavy handed manner. The script is fine but deftly #Waltzes along without really making any moral judgement on Warren or showing support for the free African opposition. I feel like the #Nesbitt era might have handled it all with a little more guts and a little more confidence. Scott is the lone gunman in waiting who the #Team are looking for; they repeatedly describe him as a madman but frankly his motives are more than a little sympathetic..
