In this way, the solid fact of Steptoe and Edwards's achievement to date is embedded in a series of layers: of speculation about the prospects of human cloning; of ethical argument concerning the need to consider possible consequences not just of a particular line of research but of other, later developments which might thus be made more acceptable; and the whole wrapped up in the Frankenstein myth.
