Betrayal

    “ What?? ” He turned around, looking at Toni with confused eyes. He wasn’t sure if he had heard it right. “ What was that, Toni? ” He asked again, backing away INSTINCTIVELY. He had already been a bit too paranoid with all the stuff going on recently and that felt like salt on a wound. “ Toni… ” At this point, he was not holding her hand anymore, a feet away from her as he kept his gaze locked on her.

A smile crept across Toni’s lips, relief washing over her as she realized he had heard her.  She no longer had to pretend.  “Hail Hydra.” She said louder, stepping closer to the man. “Do you have a problem with that?”

Ringing

Three...Four...Five. Toni flipped the phone closed quickly, hearing the small click from the speaker signaling that it had been connected.  She had called so many times.  More than she could remember.  But she hadn’t spoken to Ste- Rogers since she had read the letter.  His handwriting, so neat and tidy almost militaresque, mocked her from the page.  If she needed him Of course she needed him.  Was that not clear with how often she called before things went south? Sure she had been living in Malibu, but she had called them all the time.  She had made endless tech and upgrades and base modifications, any excuse to stay involved with the team.  

Lifting her eyes from the ancient satellite phone, she regarded the shield, displayed lovingly across the room.  It was hidden away, in her bedroom, so that no one else could see it.  Toni knew that she shouldn’t have taken it from him.  But there was a part of her that hadn’t believed he would really drop the shield, that he wouldn’t give up that piece of himself.  The piece of him hat she knew the best.  Instead he left, not hearing the rasping of her breath or understanding the gravity of the injury he had caused.  She was lucky that FRIDAY called in the cavalry.  

Picking the phone up again, she dialed the number, the only number in the phones contact list.  Steve.

Toni sat back and watched, staring at her phone or out the window.  She couldn’t look at the conference table, she could tell just by the tone of voice that Steve hated the resolution she had been able to garner.  She didn’t want to see that same disappointed look that he always gave her, like she should have known better, she should have done better.  He didn’t understand what the other options had been.  This was the best possible outcome, if she hadn’t gotten involved and lobbied for this then the accords would have had a very different bill to vote on.  

The secretary of state left the building, leaving Toni alone to deal with the disgruntled avengers.  Never before had she been more sorry to see a politician leave a room.  She almost wanted to call him back, but she knew it had to be her who did this.  Sighing heavily, she took her place at the front of the room and turned to her team, well....more like ex-team. “This is the best deal that we’re gonna get.”

The first thing she heard was the beeping, an incessant noise cutting through the haze of sleep.  Her body felt heavy, her eyelids heavier, and there was something wrong with the arc reactor.  Or maybe not, her chest felt heavy, very heavy, almost like she couldn’t draw enough air into her lungs.  Taking stock, she realized that there was something foreign against her arm, an IV? Did she do something? How did she get to the hospital? The last thing she remembered...pain shot through her mind like a lightning bolt, shatteringthat train of thought.  

Her eyes fluttered open and she found herself staring at a white ceiling.  She was in a sterile room, probably half naked in one of those stupid hospital gowns. Turning her head to the left, shock and sadness clenched at her heart.  Seated in the chair beside her, holding her hand was Steve.  Seeing him made it all come rushing back, the video...the fight...the betrayal.  She took a breath, still feeling that weight on her chest and turned her head to the other side.  “Aren’t you supposed to be on the run?”
