Laugh in your love life: make women laugh and encourage them
The most important time to be able to laugh is when things look worst. The economic recession may be quite dark when you try to stretch a fixed income or watch the hard earned money as investments fade. But this is not really the time to remember how to laugh. The humor can be extremely therapeutic. Before going further, it is an important distinction to make about the kind of humor that I advocate here. The only person you should make fun of yourself. At your weaknesses, your flaws, your situation. It's all fodder for jokes if you're the only one to do. However, laughing at others is not therapeutic. Words. As minor and short on the creative genius. All great comedians know, but you do not have to stand to benefit from this vision. Laugh with others. Laugh at yourself - even if you're looking to bankruptcy, foreclosure, or having to live with your brother incredibly disorderly young people because of this pesky economic downturn. Why? Because laughter really is good medicine. Norman Cousins was confronted with an incurable spine when he chose this strategy. Instead of staying in the hospital, he moved to the hotel and after a dose of humor to himself every day as a comedy film classics. He wrote about the experience gained in Anatomy of an illness, the statement that if he laughed for three hours in the morning, it would pain the rest of the day. Laughter can be more effectively with the emotional pain. So find ways to laugh. Martha Beck devotes an entire chapter to laugh at the Joy Diet - and his writing is certainly laughter therapy. As an option, it suggests stupidity. I am very happy. I've been a fan of personal stupidity in my entire life, but he gets a very bad rap. The stupidity in this culture is interpreted as inconsistency, naivety and a lack of appreciation of the seriousness of the situation. What a waste of a good tool. Stupidity can do more to help you let go of the emotions than anything else you can do standing. Stupidity requires that you waive your problem, at least temporarily, to the point of ridiculous. Therefore, my brothers spent their time in the waiting room while Dad had the quadruple bypass invent a card game with rules of goofy impossible. That's why I cross my eyes when I can draw the attention of a friend in the midst of a lengthy presentation. Silly is not just for kids. It is your right and responsibility. Do something silly today and make the world a better place. One way to be ridiculous when times are tight is with games that are fun than cutting. At one point when my husband and I were facing an economic gap, we launched a contest to see who could use both their paper lunch bag more. At right, the idea is being able to throw when you have finished your meal. But how much fun is that? He won - I think it all the way to the fourth week, something like 21 consecutive meals out of that bag. Mine developed a terminal tear on Day 16. Dang. There are benefits beyond the pleasure in this kind of stupidity. Have you noticed that "going green" and save money often involve the same behavior? "Use it up. Wear it. Recycle it. "Is good for the environment and the wallet. And if you can find fun ways to do so, it is also good for your sense of well-being. If you're ready to work, you can learn to laugh at anything. Just "Ha ha" to the therapeutic value it offers. There are clubs that meet to do this. Really. I have not progressed to that point. Even when I try to just laugh, I finally think of something funny and laugh louder. You have your own style on this, for sure. But only if you put a little effort into its development. "Style" requires action. Refining and polishing your sense of humor is an ideal stage of action for a slowdown. Defenders Beck laughs at least thirty one days and recommended a hundred. (Did that make you laugh?) When things seem terrible, find a way to laugh. It can change your mood in the blink of an eye, only the costs of energy it takes to do so, and has no negative side effects. Maybe we should make our first treatment for all - even before a bandage.
