#pattern questions

Hi there! I am working on your Entrails pattern for a friend and I wondered if you had any advice about doing the half stitches in the 'halo' around the raven. I've never really done anything with this complex a pattern of half stitches like this, so I thought I'd see if you have any advice before I just jump right in! Other than those, this is a super fun pattern and I'm loving it so much—I'm using The Gentle Arts' 'Raven' floss for the raven and it is looking so cool.

Hey! I’m actually stitching Entrails myself! I don’t really have any advice other than to just jump in and go with you heart. The little ‘starbursts’ they make are extremely satisfying, I do have to say.  I looked up that floss and *chefs kiss*. That is going to look lovely.

hi, i'm currently making the Compassion pattern and i'm wondering whether the backstitch for the plaid and barbed wire is meant to be made with one or two threads? i can't find any indication of which it is written on the pattern itself, though i think i've read other places that one thread is the standard?

One thread is standard, but as we’ve stated before, go with whatever feels right/looks good to you!

I feel you might know this so I'll ask you. You know when you crochet the tentacles of an octopus? Is there like a certain stitch/technique so that they twirl like that? I have fluffy yarn and I saw the reblog and I want to use my yarn to make those octopuses (octopi?)

I haven't actually tried those patterns yet that I reblogged though I really want to. http://nocturnalcrochet.tumblr.com/post/81349460177/insertcrochetpunhere-mcalhen-creations     this does have the pattern to making the squid so it should have how to do the twirl, but I think honestly, it sort of does that on it's own from just being long.However, if you do have questions I would highly recommend sending an ask to mcalhen-creations, they are ABSOLUTELY fantastic and love to talk crochet and loves to help people with their patterns and def 10/10 recommend them.

Sorry if this isn't too much help! But I hope it was at least some what.

Ballgown dreamer collars

My ballgown collar was honestly one of the weirdest pieces of crap that I’ve had to draft a pattern for.  It doesn’t connect in the front, but rather in the back with a magnetic snap between the seam line between two of the colored stripes.  Honestly I’m kind of embarrassed to show how I did it because I had these lofty dreams of precision and it ended up being more of a matter of capping the ends with cardboard and hot glue and smashing things to deform the cardboard until things looked kind of acceptable.

The other detail I tried for was that I sewed the short edges of the stripes together first and then used the final long seam to attach the lace to the collar, so there was only one seam going length-wise around the collar.

Here’s the basic process of how I drafted the collar, minus a lot of the expletives I wanted to put in there.

If you don't mind me asking, did you use a pattern or something to make that skirt? I'm looking to make something similar ish for a Bioshock Infinite cosplay and I'm having trouble finding a pattern/advice on how to make that type of skirt.

I drafted the pattern myself, but A-line skirts are pretty much the EASIEST PATTERN EVER to draft.  Here is the basic pattern I used:

X = your waist circumference divided by 4, plus 1/2” for seam allowance

Y = length from your waist to desired hem location, plus 1” for seam allowance (1/2" each for top and bottom of the skirt)

Fold the fabric lengthwise, then place the edge of the pattern along the center fold.  You’ll need to cut two pieces, so the length of your fabric will need to be at least 2*Y.  Sew the pieces together and use a zipper for the top 4-8 inches of one of the seams so you can get into the skirt.

If I wanted to be fancy, I could even curve line X to make it match the shape of my waist better.  But that is for people who aren’t working on their costumes on Tuesday night before Acen.
