a classic example of post-war modernism in the rhineland is the administration building for foncordia versicherung built by wilhelm riphahn and paul doetsch. its design is simple, symmetrical and of cool elegance. i find it particularly beautiful in the early evening hours when the light shines through the windows but you can still make out the exterior façade with its natural stone elements.

nord-süd-fahrt // köln innenstadt

wdr archivhaus

completion: 1968

another building that can be experienced in a completely new way due to the road closure of the nord-süd-fahrt for cars is the wdr-archivhaus, which rises omnipresent in the city centre, but which can otherwise hardly be approached except on narrow footpaths. so the dimensions were tangible in a completely different way and I wondered how many unrealised historical treasures of the wdr's past in film or sound form are stored in this gigantic building.
