#victoria regina #summer #1964 #granada #classic tv #laurence housman #peter wildeblood #stuart latham #patricia routledge #joachim hansen #jolyon booth #geoffrey dunn #jennie linden #james ottaway #barbara couper #john brooking #paul williamson #patricia greene #tom payne #john raven #where part one concentrated on Victoria's ascension to the throne‚ part two is a closer examination of the relationship between her and #Albert. it's both a loving and turbulent relationship‚ complicated by disparate factors: the traditional gender roles of victorian era #marriage in conflict with Victoria's position as Queen over Albert‚ their different nationalities and approach to customs and behaviours‚#as well as the pressures of external influences in politics and court members. this is very much a theatrical piece but it speaks to the #quality of both the writing and the performances that it is very easy to forget that this is basically just 50 minutes of conversations in #a series of different rooms. one aspect of the plot is Albert's (illegitimate) parentage‚ and I do wonder if this is an addition for tv #whilst the theory is not unknown (but unproven) and i believe featured in the more recent Jenna Coleman series‚ I'd be surprised if Housman #had included it in his original play (which appeared after all only 33 years after Victoria's death‚ and required special permission to #even be staged‚ as stage depictions of recent monarchs were considered taboo; it took King Edward VIII himself to overturn the rule).#not having a copy of the play in my collection i unfortunately cannot check but it does seem unlikely to me

The Bits Watson Doesn’t Tell us

The front cover, page 1, 2, 3, 15, 17 and 19 (I counted both sides even though some are empty). This book is really thick and most of them have comics on both sides of a page. Sometimes there is a lot of text. I will happily share more pages in the future (not by number since it is not number pages in this one) but not the whole thing. I mean it wouldn’t be right of me to do so even though this is one book that is not easily found.

I'm only one episode in of course so I don't want to call it prematurely #But I may have rather over excited myself for this. A curiously atypical Mackintosh product it seems to be eschewing the hard drama and #Intricate plots with a dash of humour of his earlier Warship and subsequent masterpiece Sandbaggers in favour of something..#Well humour is much more to the fore (and rather more obvious) whilst those strong plots have melted into the background. Again I'm only #On the first one so I should chill out I guess. Mackintosh had worked with Lee and Burton on Warship and would go on to work with Willis in #Sandbaggers; as in all his work the casting is excellent throughout. The late Stride is irascible but mischievous and makes his thriller #Writer adventurer strangely likeable (strangely because he unfortunately demonstrates a very 1970s attitude to domesticity and sharing the #Work load in a marriage: i hope further episodes will ease back on this because its pretty off putting tbh). Foster is much more #Straight forwardly loveable and will be a big boon to this series I think. The rest of the cast is rounded out with some decidedly oddball #Characters (huggable old Pat Newell playing of all things an amateur pornographer... Smh). We will see where this goes....

Martin would already have made the Sweeney pilot by this point and was probably working on the first #Series and whilst there are aspects of that shows style evident here there are also a lot of other things going on: there's a whole mix of #Influences from The Avengers (the unbalanced bomber and the postman disguises feel very Avengers) to Callan (the way the script #Follows the villains as much as the heroes and the general grubbiness of the corrupt diplomat angle; also Callan regular Williamson has a #Brief cameo as a bomb expert) to the more burgeoning style of 70s TV and increased violence (Craven's ott take down of the villain should #Have lost him his job). Shaw had worked with Sewell on UFO and in a nice touch Craven impersonates a diamond expert called Straker (the #Name of Ed Bishop's character in UFO). Lovely Susan Jameson seems to have been promoted to regular and there are indeed hints of that #Romance I predicted last time. She gets a central role here and is very good although a sudden left turn into very adult and serious #Territory half way through is perhaps... Well maybe Martin bit off more than he could chew. Its a good try but the topic (Jameson is the #Victim of a violent assault in the course of duty) is far too serious and needed much more sensitive treatment to be a ten minute side plot #In a nonsense ep of an action cop show. No fault of Jameson (who is very good in the scenes) it's just this kind of topic demands a much #Thoughtful and careful treatment than the one here which feels shoe horned into the ep to fill up time and provide Craven with some rage
