Paul Merson has urged Chelsea to sign Manchester City defender John Stones (Picture: Sky Sports)Paul Merson has urged Frank Lampard to sign John Stones and says the Manchester City defender can be a ‘success story’ at Chelsea. Stones is widely expected to leave the Etihad this summer having fallen down the pecking order at Man City and has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. Lampard is keen to bolster his defensive options and is looking at the likes of Declan Rice, Ben White and Lewis Dunk as well as England international Stones. Former Arsenal and England star Merson told StarSport: ‘Chelsea should go and get John Stones because there is a success story there waiting to happen. ‘When you hear they have put defenders like Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen up for sale, you can see they need a centre back. ‘I’ve said all along Stones would do well there. And they should go and get him now. He has no future at City. Stones has been heavily linked with a move away from Man City (Picture: Getty)‘Guardiola was playing a midfielder, Fernandinho, ahead of him last season, and a defender in Eric Garcia who wants to leave the club! ‘I’d be amazed if he was still there by the end of this window. But lots of clubs should be looking at him. ‘Stones is homegrown. He’s an England international. He has plenty of experience. But he’s still young. He ticks a lot of boxes. Alex Bruce has praised Tottenham talisman Harry Kane for his heroics since the Premier League restart while at the same time condemning his critics. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hull City defender claimed it is “ridiculous” that people are still doubting Kane’s commitment following his return from a hamstring injury. Jose Mourinho has never been one to shy away from confrontation and fired a barb at Paul Merson after the Sky Sports pundit implied the Spurs striker could question his future at the club as a result of Mourinho’s methods. Kane scored his 18th goal of the season as Spurs thumped West Ham at home to leave their London rivals in a precarious position. The ex-Premier League ace lauded Kane for his successful comeback after a lengthy layoff. Bruce told assistant editor Russell Edge “the one person who stood out the other night, because of all the criticism which I thought I was absolutely ridiculous, was Harry Kane. “The way he bounced back showed his strength with a great finish and good composure in front of goal in the last minutes of the game. “To go and burst through and slot it into the back of the net showed what a quality player he is. He’s been out for a long period of time and to have criticism after just one game I thought was ridiculous.” It is hard to argue with Bruce here, as Kane is the club’s top scorer this season, despite the fact he missed a huge chunk of games after sustaining an injury in the defeat to Southampton on New Year’s Day. Moreover, Merson’s suggestion seems rather unjust. In Mourinho, Kane finally has a manager who has won it all, as his track record more than speaks for itself. Unlike his predecessor, the Portuguese actually knows what it feels like to win the Champions League, and has made it clear he wants to win trophies with the Lilywhites. As it stands, Mourinho’s side are currently seventh in the table, nine points away from fourth-placed Chelsea. While a top-four finish seems evermore unlikely, it is not too far-fetched to believe Spurs can at least make it to the Europa League. Paul Merson has hailed Manchester United transfer target Jack Grealish (Picture: Sky Sports)Former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson says ‘special’ Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish would be a ‘massive asset’ to Manchester United. Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his squad at Old Trafford this summer and has expressed interest in signing Grealish. The 24-year-old midfielder took his boyhood club back up into the Premier League last season and has impressed this term despite Villa’s struggles. Merson named Grealish as one of three players he ‘cannot wait to watch again’ following the coronavirus pandemic and says he would be an ‘asset’ to any Premier League club. ‘He’s the best three or four-yard passer I’ve seen in the game for a long, long time,’ the Arsenal legend told Sky Sports. ‘People will say: “Three or four-yard passes? So?” but you watch the game and see how many people roll a three-yard pass back to the left back and he has to take a touch to get it under control. ‘Or if someone goes on the overlap and the pass goes out of touch. His passing is always pitch-perfect. Grealish is believed to be open to joining Manchester United (Picture: Getty)‘He’s a special player, very comfortable on the ball and very gifted. ‘I personally think he’d be a massive asset for any club in the Premier League.’ Following a difficult start to the season, Manchester United had climbed to fifth in the Premier League before the campaign was suspended. Against the bigger boys, teams that come and have a go, they’re a better team, playing counter-attacking football, but you have to mix it up. ‘When you become a better football team, teams kick off and put 11 players behind the ball and do that counter-attack to you.’ Follow Metro Sport across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Paul Merson has likened Chelsea’s Reece James to David Beckham (Picture: Getty)Paul Merson has likened highly-rated Chelsea star Reece James to Manchester United and England legend David Beckham. James, 20, has made 18 appearances for his boyhood club this season and Arsenal hero Merson believes he can force his way into England’s squad for Euro 2020. The full back spent last season on loan at Wigan Athletic and was named in the Championship Team of the Year before returning to Stamford Bridge. Manchester United hero and former England star Beckham (Picture: Getty)Merson has been impressed by his performances in west London, telling Sky Sports: ‘He crosses the ball as well as David Beckham used to. ‘His crosses very rarely go to waste. He always does the right thing. He’s a forward’s dream. He whips the ball in on a consistent basis. ‘It’s David Beckham-like. That’s exactly how Beckham used to hit the ball. His defending will get better but going forward he’s great. Paul Merson does not believe Mikel Arteta is the right man for the Arsenal job (Picture: Getty Images)Paul Merson has compared Mikel Arteta taking the Arsenal job to Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather as he slams the appointment. The Spaniard was announced as the new Gunners boss on Friday afternoon, taking over from Unai Emery who was sacked at the end of November. A former Arsenal captain and successful coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, Arteta is highly regarded at the Emirates, although this is his first job in management. Merson believes this lack of experience is a huge negative and the 37-year-old does not have the necessary know-how to turn the struggling club around. The appointment reminds Merson of McGregor taking his first ever boxing match against one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mayweather. ‘Mikel Arteta taking on the Arsenal job is like Conor McGregor trying to fight Floyd Mayweather,’ wrote in the Daily Star. Conor McGregor was beaten by Floyd Mayweather in August 2017 (Picture: Getty Images)‘It’s one of the biggest jobs in football and you’re giving it to someone who has never managed in his life! ‘If the Arsenal board think they are suddenly going to start playing like Manchester City just because Arteta has worked with Pep Guardiola for a bit, they need to wake up and smell the coffee. ‘Arsenal don’t need a quick fix. They need a long-term plan. But you need that experience to start with.’ A number of candidates were considered for the role in north London, with Max Allegri, Carlo Ancelotti, Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino all being linked with the job. However, one man that wasn’t spoken about that Merson believes would have been an appropriate target is Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who has done a stunning job with the Blades. ‘Look at Chris Wilder and the job he’s done at Sheffield United. How has he not even been mentioned?’ Merson continued. ‘He’s done everything right, been through the leagues and been hugely successful. Worked his way up. Coped in difficult situations. Gained years of experience. ‘Doesn’t even get a look-in. I’m not saying he should have got the job instead but to not even be considered?’ Arsenal take on Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League at 12.30pm on Saturday.
