Francis Picabia 'Pavonia' 1929

👨‍🎨Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde painter, poet and typographer. Known for his versatility, irreverence and constant reinvention, Picabia was one of the most unpredictable and provocative figures in Modern Art.

🖼️Picabia created a series of panels, known as "transparencies", for the bedroom of Madame Rosenberg, which included 'Pavonia'.

Inspired by classical mythology, the overlapping figures, flowers and architectural details in Picabia's work evoke a sensuous and surreal dream.

Sold for €10 million at Sotheby's in 2022, at a record price for a work by Picabia.

This shrub reaches a height of 4 to 6 feet tall (1.2 to 1.8 m), and it is native to northern Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brasil. The bright red flowers look like little hibiscuses, and indeed they belong to the same family - Malvaceae.
