I’m really late with this entry! The next one’s gonna be even later, but I’m still writing it. It’s going to be the last one, though! No Free Day entry from me, I’m afraid.

Excerpt:

“Some of your memories are still hazy,” Crystal finished for him.

“I have most of them,” Edwin protested. “I’m just not sure if I can remember every ghost I’ve met.”

“Maybe you did,” Charles said. “It’s probably just a coincidence.”

“I don’t know.” Edwin frowned. “Something feels… off.”

Charles got up from where he was perched on the desk and came around to Edwin’s side. He placed his hand on the back of the chair and leaned in a little, hoping to provide comfort. Edwin turned to look up at him and Charles smelled the gentle, woody tones of Edwin’s subtle cologne. For a moment, Charles wanted to close his eyes and inhale, but he stopped himself. That would be super creepy, especially since he and Edwin had only known each other for half a year. 

Shaking that urge away, Charles said, “Mate. This isn’t like David, yeah? You don’t need to worry about it. Not everyone who flirts with you is gonna be dangerous. Or a crow.”

Edwin groaned. “Did you need to bring that up?”

Painland Week 2026: Aug 3rd - Aug 9th

We are pleased to welcome you to the third fandom week dedicated to the celebration of the pairing Charles Rowland/Edwin Payne from the series Dead Boy Detectives.

Additional information about each of the day's prompts:

Day 1 - Dancing together / First date

The works focuses on Charles and Edwin are dancing together, maybe for the first time, which leads to a romantic connection or the realization of feelings between them. For some reason, they wind up dancing to some slow romantic song that requires waltzing or some other dance typified by close body contact. It is a powerful way to show a developing or newly realized attraction, as it requires trust, vulnerability, and physical closeness, creating an intimate and emotional moment that can change their relationship dynamic.

The work could be about how guys go on their first date. It could be a work in which one organizes a date for the other, and it's a grand romantic gesture, like a surprise date planned by one, while the other is caught off guard, or it could be about something going wrong during the date. Or perhaps they'll go somewhere exciting, and it'll be the best date in the afterlife? We look forward to your works!

Day 2 - Sharing clothes / Like an old married couple

Your work could focus on how Charles and Edwin exchange clothes. Perhaps it's a situation in which one boy shares their clothes with the other, or one wears the other's clothes. More often than not, this suggests comfort, an emotional connection, and a "piece of you" emotional connection.

The plot focuses on how the boys act like an "old married couple" and this shows that they feel very comfortable with each other, this highlights their deep connection and understanding that goes beyond words, so much so that it seems as if they have been married for a very long time.

Day 3 - Forehead kiss / Almost kiss

Forehead kiss signifies a deep emotional connection, respect, and a promise of support, conveying comfort, adoration, and often a sense of deep love, and used to show affection in many contexts, from a quiet moment of reassurance to comforting someone in distress.

The work highlights how a forehead kiss is a means of comfort and affection for boys, emphasizing their emotional closeness and trust, and being a way to say "I love you" without words.

The work centers on a tense situation in which boys are about to kiss, but are interrupted, creating emotional tension. This could be a sudden sound, a sudden noise, or someone accidentally interrupts them.

Day 4 - Silly traditions / Gift giving

The boys have been together for over 30 years, and during that time, they could well have developed some important, silly traditions that they share only with each other. So, what could it be? You can use all your imagination!

The works may focus on how boys give each other gifts. This can be a way to express their feelings for each other, show affection, or simply a way to please each other. The work places great emphasis on the thoughtfulness with which the gift is given, emphasizing how well they understand each other.

Day 5 - Act of true love / Devotion

An act of true love irrefutably proves that Charles and Edwin are willing to put each other's interests above their own, that they are faithful and devoted to each other. This requires sacrifice on someone's part, at a minimum, significant effort and/or risk. The action must be motivated not by morality or principles, but by pure personal affection. When one boy is in dire need of the other's help or is in great danger, the other does something, attempting to sacrifice himself for the other's safety, well-being, or happiness, thereby irrefutably proving that he puts the other's interests above his own. It could be a sacrificial act that removes a curse or resolves a problem.

The work focuses on the boys' devotion to each other, often to the extreme. This can manifest as unwavering, almost irresistible love, a single-minded determination that drives each of their actions, or a deep-rooted commitment to each other or their relationship that lasts for many years.

Day 6 - Curse / Magic

The work focuses on a curse. This can involve one or both boys falling under the influence of a curse. This forces them to endure hardships or perform heroic deeds to lift the curse, which can range from a simple, mild curse to a terrifying one that threatens the boys' existence. Curses can be cast by various entities, including angry gods, witches, or other magical beings. A curse can manifest in various ways: from cursed objects such as jewelry, books, or weapons that must not be touched, to verbal ones. It can be a direct curse, which can lead to specific consequences, a transformation or illness, or a cursed location that is dangerous to enter.

The work's plot could focus on how boys learn or use magic. It could also be about how they encounter magic in its most fundamental form, or something magical.

Day 7 - Free day

Free day for all works that do not fit with any of the themes.
