it’s not that, it’s that the whole system is gamed by corporations and the government and has fucked society
where the trouble is patents, every gmo is patented by an corporation (the most notable being monsanto) and in the united states and in other countries, there are a ton of bars to agriculture leaving farmers with basically the only option to either, you know, use a gmo that is not the best crop actually because you cannot have any excess, you can’t recollect seeds for next years crop and a shit ton of other things because GMO seeds are rigged to keep farmers dependent on giving all of their money to corporations
so say if you want to, not, use GMO patented seeds, then you’re basically fucked as a farmer because there’s a huge process of registration and a whole bunch of basically busy work the government makes you do so you can legally sell your crops, it’s all an expedited process with GMOs because that’s all done for you, which is a huge incentive to use it because honestly? the government system that the United States have (that corporations have been lobbying for decades to make) makes it nearly impossible for the average person without a very fucking good lawyer and accountant to do anything
and say you do, if you live anywhere near some other farmer that works with GMO crops then you’re once again fucked, if there’s any sort of cross pollination (which i wanna say will happen within a 20 mile radius i’m not sure but it’s fucking huge) between your non gmo crop and the gmo then the corporation can sue and will, and the least they will do is force you to burn all your crops for the year which, is hell,
so like, the whole issue with GMOs is not that they’re healthy or bad for you or not it’s that they’re literally killing the American economic system from the inside out with an increased need for subsidies while letting one single corporation for the most part control the entire agricultural system
the whole health thing to be honest with you, is a scam also done by the corporations to hide the real issues with GMOs, I don’t remember the numbers it’s been about 6 months since i did my research on it but i believe it’s around 80% of those studies that are researching if GMOs are dangerous (and subsequently come back with “unclear results”) are in fact done by the very corporations that own the patents which, results in a huge bias where they can manipulate the results however they please (so take the whole! they’re not bad for you with a grain of salt)
(not to mention there’s a huge issue with monoculture and it’s shit affects on people not to mention the environment but that’s like…another rant)
tl;dr it’s not about whether GMOs are healthy or not it’s about their negative impact on society as a whole through patents which don’t allow other innovation to happen within agriculture and harm farmers and is a huge drain economic wise
