“Let’s hit the new cafe on the block.”
“I mean sure, I’d be soo down for a hot chocolate right now.”
Just like that, the Uconn’s Women’s basketball team was on their way to Velvet Roast, on the one day they were off basketball practice due to the weather.
They picked a corner booth, not wanting to attract too much attention to themselves, too tired to have to deal with any one of Paige’s fans today.
“Okay, who’s ordering?”
“I’ll go.”
Paige took down her friend’s orders before making her way to the cashier, not really bothering to look up from her phone just yet.
“Hello, welcome to Velvet Roast!“
Paige lifted her head at this, and connected the sweet voice to an even sweeter face, with luscious curls pulled back into a bun with 2 front pieces framing her thick jawline, and her eyes — oh my gosh, her eyes
And apparently, Paige had gotten so distracted she hadn’t realised the girl had already asked her for her order, and now they were both just staring at each other.
The girl smiled nervously, “hello?”
This seemed to snap Paige out of whatever star-stuck trance she was in, because she quickly blurted out, “4 hot chocolates.”
The girl seemed slightly taken aback by the sudden order, but with the same soft tone, just said, “okay, anything else?”
“And an Iced Americano. Sorry. Thank you.”
The girl simply nodded and typed in the order. “Could I have a name?”
“Paige. Paige Bueckers.”
Paige was hoping there’d be some recognition. She was hoping she’d be able to use her “I’m a really good basketball player and I’m lowkey famous” as a way to flirt, because in all honesty, this girl was actually quite cute.
But again, the girl just nodded. Nothing else. No eye-widening-eyebrow-lifting-recognition. Just a simple, “okay. I’ll have your 4 hot chocolates and Iced Americano out for you soon.”
Usually, Paige doesn’t want to be recognised. Sure, she loved meeting her fans, and she would never turn a fan down, but she doesn’t really like getting special treatment. At the end of the day, she was still just a normal girl.
But this time was different. She wanted the girl to notice. She wanted her to notice and strike up a conversation. But that didn’t happen. She just did her job and moved on to the next customer.
And Paige had just deeply embarrassed herself.
Paige walked back to her corner booth, knowing her order would take a little while especially with the crowd. Her walk wasn’t as confident as it was when she had first walked in. It held a slight drop. Her shoulders were hunched slightly and her feet were dragging. She had a defeated stare, as if she couldn’t believe she just did that.
“Damn P, what happened at the cashier? You look like you just lost a battle.”
She did. “I did.”
“What’d you do now?”
“I just embarrassed myself in front of a cute girl.”
This got a laugh out of her teammates.
“You? The big ol’ flirt? Paige Bueckers? The woman who has ladies left and right? Failed to flirt with a cute cafe worker?”
Paige just sat down and put her head on the table, too tired to entertain her teammates.
“I took too long to answer. And then I was too blunt. And she doesn’t even know who I am. I used my name. My full name. She spoke like I was a normal customer. She works this close to Uconn and she doesn’t know me? Like, me?”
“Maybe she’s just not into basketball. It’s not the end of the world. Just ask her for her number when she hands you the drinks.”
“No, KK. You don’t understand. I humiliated myself. She’s never going to want to talk to me again.”
“You’re so dramatic. Just go get our drinks.”
Paige stood up and walked over to the counter to wait for the drinks, and right on cue, she heard a “4 hot chocolates and an Iced Americano for Paige?”
she didn’t even say my full name.
But fuck,
my name slid off her tongue so naturally.
Paige walked up and collected the drinks. In an attempt to recover from her embarrassing moment from before, she made eye contact with the girl and muttered a quick thanks before quickly walking over to her booth.
From this interaction, she had gathered the girl’s name was Azzi, as per her name tag.
When Paige got back to her dorm, she had one mission. Find Azzi’s Instagram.
It couldn’t be too hard, right?
Wrong.
First she checked the Uconn’s student page, in hopes she could stalk the following for some lead.
Okay. Nevermind. Abort that mission.
Then, she tried searching Velvet Roast’s Instagram page. But there was also no lead. (She did find a couple photos of Azzi, so she was still slightly satisfied, but it wasn’t enough)
So, she resorted to asking around.
First she considered asking KK, but the girl didn’t seem to be in the same grade as KK, so she aborted that and moved on.
Then, Jana. Nothing.
Aubrey. Also nothing.
Nika. Guess what? Absolutely nothing.
Exasperated, she went to Caroline’s dorm, where the rest of the girls were hanging out.
As the extrovert she is, she bursted in.
“GUYYYYSUGHHHH! I CANT FIND ANY INFORMATION ON THIS DAMN CAFE GIRL ANYWHE-“
She stopped dead in her tracks.
She was met with a familiar face.
But it wasn’t Caroline’s.
Or KK’s.
Or Sarah’s.
Or any of her teammates.
No.
It was the devil angel herself.
Paige almost fainted. She swore that she’d rather never play basketball ever again rather than have to experience this.
The cute cafe girl she was just complaining about.
That she just admitted she was stalking for,
Is standing infront of her. Staring at her with her beautiful brown orbs In a pink crop top and jeans shorts, her curls out and a
mother fucking belly piercing.
Paige didn’t realise she could get even more attractive.
Guess she could.
“Oh, hello, we meet again”
Paige opened her mouth, in hopes whatever came out now didn’t make her sound as stupid as she felt and looked right now.
“Uh-I-hello!”
Of fucking course. She stuttered.
Paige cleared her throat, trying to salvage some of the any semblance of dignity she still had.
“Hello.”
“I’m Caroline’s new roommate. Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you or anything. If you’re looking for your teammates, they’re in Carol’s room”
“What- no! Don’t worry about it. Was just shocked is all.”
She then proceeded to let out an awkward chuckle. Great. Great first second impression Paige.
However, the good thing was it didn’t seem like she realised Paige was talking about her.
“I’m just gonna- go- it was nice meeting you! Again-”
Paige (once again) quickly dashed off to her friends, leaving a (quite confused) Azzi in the living room.
