The metadata course I am currently enrolled in is really interesting. It's fast-paced but there is a lot to cover so that is understandable. We began with an introduction to XML which I picked up fairly easily as I am familiar with HTML and its similarly formatted. From there, we've covered Dublin Core, CDWA, PREMIS, PBCore, MIX, and METS schema. It's a lot to remember but aside from a few technical issues, I'm keeping up fairly well.
