The Interview Project: PBS
I had a written test and 2 interviews (both subject interviews) all in the same day. Being a home student from Hertfordshire, my dad drove me up to my college in the morning. When I arrived, the porters gave me directions to the JCR and allowed my dad to come with me to find it as I was super nervous! I then said goodbye to my dad and he went to wander around Cambridge while I sat in the JCR to wait for my written test. There were other interviewees also waiting (I think all for PBS too) but I didn’t talk to any of them as I imagine we all felt pretty nervous. When the time came, we were shown to quite a grand and pretty room and each sat at a table. We were given some instructions, allowed to ask questions should we have any, and then had 45 minutes to complete the written test in test conditions.
After that, I had some time before my first interview so I met back up with my dad and had a much needed McDonalds breakfast.
My first interview was with my DoS and the waiting room was a chair outside their office. Once they had finished with the interviewee that came before me, they introduced themselves to me and invited me into the room. I was quite intimidated by my DoS as they were very direct but tried to act as calm and as friendly as I could. If there were questions I wasn’t grasping, they would give me hints and clues and ask related questions to try and help me along. There was one question that I started to answer in a very long-winded way but they stopped me halfway through (I’ll never know if it’s because they were getting bored or if they could see I was going in the right direction with my answer!). I came out of that interview thinking it hadn’t gone too well.
My 2nd interview I felt I did much better despite me having trouble finding the room even though there was a paper sign pointing to where I should be going (which I obviously wasn’t observant enough to see!). This interviewer mentioned my personal statement but ultimately it was just more subject related questions like before. I felt like my interviewer really liked me and we had some banter. All in all, I remember leaving Cambridge that day not sure of how it had gone, but I got in so I must have done something right!
