Authorities recovered more than 300 bags of heroin and a handgun on Thursday inPhillipsburg, continuing a torrid pace of drug-related arrests in recent days.
Luis Diaz, 19, faces 16 charges as a result of the bust, including heroin distribution and weapons possession, court records say.
Daniel Baker, 21, and Miguel Aguilar, 20, who share his address in the 600 block of Green Street, were charged a single count of possession of synthetic marijuana, according to court papers.
With the arrests, Phillipsburg police have now charged at least 20 people with drug crimes in the past 10 days.
In court papers, police say Diaz was observed selling heroin in July within 500 feet of property belonging to the Phillipsburg Housing Authority. When he was busted on Thursday, he had a black 9mm Kel-Tec handgun, brass knuckles and 334 bags of heroin, court papers say.
Police noted the serial number on the gun was scraped off.
Diaz was also alleged to have been in possession of 57 bags of synthetic marijuana.
He was scheduled to make his first appearance this afternoon in New Jersey Superior Court in Belvidere and remains in the Warren County jail this afternoon in lieu of $75,000 bail. Baker and Aguilar each were issued a summons and released.
Drug-related arrests have become almost a daily occurrence in Phillipsburg as of late as authorities continue to crack down on drugs in the downtown area.
A majority of those arrested, who range in age from 19 to 52, face distribution and related charges. The arrests are largely associated with potent drugs such as heroin, crack and cocaine.
In a news release Wednesday, town police said the arrests are the result of a multi-department investigation which started in May.
Mayor Harry Wyant Jr. has described the operation as a concerted effort by law enforcement to bring down drug dealers.
Authorities today declined to reveal more details of the case, only saying the investigation is ongoing.
