Hey, do you have any advice for plotting out multi-chapter fics?

UHHHHH not really? I’m sorry-

I have a hard time writing ANYTHING or being able to stay focused on more than one thing. That’s part of the reason why the next chapter of Walls and Holes is taking so long. I also don’t like the idea of posting chapters without having at LEAST one lined up and ready to post.

I CAN tell you my process tho!

For starters: It’s best if you have the whole thing planned out first. Don’t worry about details or dialogue, just worry about Actual events and the Most Important moments. Those are the Best moments usually where the meat of the story is. Like, literally lay the bricks out before you put the mortar in.

For Walls and Holes I started out with a single one shot that couldn’t have been more than 1k words. It was super vague, covered all the Stops, and included important emotions the character was feeling. Basically what I wrote was a detailed synopsis (in story mode) of what I wanted to happen.

I’ve always hand written everything first. I write out everything in my brain. I don’t worry about cohesiveness of dialogue or staying on topic when writing character monologues. That’s for draft 2, which I type. I make revisions as a type, which usually will bring my 500 word first draft to over a 1,000 words in the second (sometimes a little above). When I’m done, I pass it off to my beta reader who dissects it and makes suggests, to which I add more which brings my word count to 1,500 or 2k (this happened to the Sink chapter which was over 6,000 words and by far the longest chapter I’ve ever written).

So I guess you could say my main advice? Have a beginning middle and end planned out and good chunk of the stuff in between ready. Don’t hesitate from writing!! Just do it. You don’t have to do it in order, you can write certain parts in advance! I did that for Sink and for some other future chapters.

If the story changes a little as you write, that’s okay to! Just make sure you have milestones and that you KNOW WHAT YOU WANT! I don’t have much more advice aside from that, this is honestly the first fic I’ve written/planned out that might actually have a future of being finished :,) We shall see tho!

Is there anything you consider "out of bounds" in terms of content for any AU? Like you won't put a character through ABC because XYZ?

I usually keep AU themes as close to the original contents themes as possible. It may have gotten a little out of hand with mermaid AUs, but I usually strive to keep everything as In Character and Rekevant as possible. I’ve reconstructed entire plots for AUs (the Frozen AU is a big one).

In terms of what I won’t put a character through: if it’s not relevant to the story, I don’t put it in. I don’t like senseless violence or angst just for the purpose of angst and making the characters miserable, because at that point tit doesn’t make sense and I’m not invested or feeling sympathy for the characters, I just feel Bad. There’s LOTS of things I could do to Jekyll in LOTS of my AUs but I hold back.

The Severed Head ending for the Frozen AU was PURELY for the drama of it and increasing the stress level but it’s not canon to my actual AU because at some point the angst just rises so high that it doesn’t feel satisfying anymore. I had a third even MORE upsetting ending that I discussed with my friend a while back but honestly it was just Too upsetting and had so many plot holes.

Anyway.

Angst/Hurt is good when it’s done in well thought out doses and done tastefully and true to the story. You gotta let it Sit, Simmer, stew, until it boils over~
