Historically, the land of Cambodia was divided amongst many different ethnic cultures. Like most countries, indigenous people were pushed out of their main land. The pockets of Cham communities (ethnically Muslim) remains strong as a minority amongst the Khmer. My PCV friend @fallengymnast has had a beautiful opportunity to live and serve in a Cham community. She’s gained a unique insight adding layers of knowledge to her experience. I live vicariously through her stories of successes and challenges. She’s found her niche becoming the “henna lady” for cultural events. Thai is some of her beautiful art work on me. #peacecorps #peacecorpscambodia #howiseepc #pck11 #henna #hennadesign #cambodia #cham (at Cambodia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzf6aXSjH6o/?igshid=xy9o34lu6zvq

I had the honor of being a bridesmaid in a Khmer wedding. It was beautiful accompanying a wonderful, lively couple. 👰🏻🤵🏻She’s a teacher and he’s an ocean archeologist. People had mistaken me for a Khmer Chinese bridesmaid and the MC didn’t know what to do when he realized I was American. Lots of laughter throughout the crowd. The people in my community always remind me why I love being a PC Volunteer. We are all more similar than we are different. Life is beautiful when we can share culture and live in harmony. #peacecorps #peacecorpscambodia #howiseepc #pck11 #khmerwedding (at Cambodia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwgyraZnrNb/?igshid=c4d3kv1x4f61
Hello Family and Friends,
I am very excited to announce that the grant project for my community, “Let’s Get Moving,” has been posted online.
I am aware that it says I’m from “Iowa.” I am very confused as well and I’m currently in the process of changing it.
This project aims to tackle the current and future health issues related to non-communicable diseases. Naturally, as cases of communicable diseases decrease, NCDs become more prevalent. We will build a shaded space on the health center property to hold weekly health education workshops and daily exercise classes. NCDs can be prevented and mitigated by practicing healthy lifestyles and community members are interested in learning different types of exercises. We want to increase the general knowledge of health of the community.
Thank you so much for your support throughout my Peace Corps journey and this grant. If you feel inclined to donate to “Let’s Get Moving,” go to this website. Whether $5 or $50, any amount is wonderful. My counterpart and I are very excited to get this project started ASAP. Our goal is to be fully funded by March 4th.

Happy Peace Corps Week! Theme: A day in the life of a PCV - Laundry. Contrary to many beliefs, I love washing my clothes by hand. It’s a time for me to meditate during my lunch break. Cultural fact: I’m washing a sarong in the photo. A sarong is worn when taking a bath or lounging around the house. In the past, before bathrooms, people would bathe on the side or back of their house with rain water from a cistern. Typically, women wear a sarong and men wear a kroma, like a large scarf or smaller version of the sarong. I heard people in the cities don’t really wear them (that’s how you know people aren’t from a city). They are very practical and cool in this heat. I wear it everyday around the house. My sister laughs at me when I want to tie it like a pareo. #peacecorpsweek #peacecorpscambodia #howiseepc #peacecorps #pck11 #laundrybyhand (at Cambodia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuYeZainsXr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19527y0m0avxz
