design for a deck piece...that might get done...
Best past of #TumblrArt Symposium was meeting GH Hovagimyan, one of first artists using the internet as a platform. He started making art when there were only BBS - before WWW in early-90s!!! Like ArtNetWeb.com, Thething.com & Rhizome (I didn’t know rhizome started out as a BBS!?).
His piece, Barbie & Ken Politically Correct is one of earliest GIFs (1994 - 14.4 baud modem).
When I asked GH why an artist like him would go to a BBS to make art in the early-90s, he said he was wanted to get away from the art scene. There was no hierarchy on message boards & it was a different place. He had to figure our how to upload an image on a 96k modem back then. Then he talked about the significance of linking - “Linking is more important than actual object. Your decision to use something is more important than that thing. It’s not curating, its clarifying an aesthetic choice.”
