UCR Katipunan presents it's 25th annual PCN "The Weight of Words"
Killer Queen Myth #3: Alternate Universe
"Philippines" is not mentioned once in the play. Which may mean that King Marian and Ferdinand aren't a royal family in the Philippines, but in a country in an alternate universe...
Killer Queen Myth #2: Gabriella's fantasy
When Imelda leaves her to go on a date with the mayor's son, her imagination creates Doug, Willy, Dick, and Aunt Demi so she can celebrate her birthday with someone. No one is actually there.
When locked in her room, Gabriella cries herself to sleep. The rest of the story is a dream.
Imelda doesn't interact with Willy or Dick until the "magic" occurs. Therefore, their voices come from inside her head.
Remember she even begins with the intro to Bohemian Rhapsody:
"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide. No escape from reality..."
She also ends the play singing "Somebody to Love."
"Some fairytale, isn't it?" - Jose Rizal
My grand finale, "Killer Queen"
Dear Family and Friends,
Please come out to support a college organization that I have been a member of for all five years at San Jose State University. Akbayan, the Filipino-American organization has become my adopted family at SJSU. It is a blessing to be surrounded by so many talented and gifted people.
On April 26th and 27th at Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, the 25th annual Pilipino Cultural Night will showcase Killer Queen.
Killer Queen is the 2nd play I've written and directed for PCN. This play is puts a fairytale twist on the Philippines' most infamous couple, Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos. The story follows Gabriella, Imelda's younger step sister, who has hopes to court the prince, Ferdinand Marcos. Ferdinand announces a ball and invites all of the maidens of the kingdom. With the help of Gabriella's fairy godfather, Jose Rizal, she turns into the woman she has always imagined with the gift of magical shoes. Imelda, on the other hand, has different plans.
The play will feature traditional Philippine dances and songs from the legendary band, Queen performed by members of Akbayan.
For those who have not been to a Pilipino Cultural Night before, I invite you to this unique experience that showcases the Philippine/Filipino-American culture.
If you have been to a PCN or have performed in one, then you're in for a show that you'll never forget! In my opinion, it will be the best PCN you've ever seen. Yes, you can hold me accountable for my confidence!
This spring I finally graduate and this show will be my last hurrah and grand finale. So, please join me and my peers at my final curtain call.
