There was something on the TV, but he drowned out the sound, staring at the screen with that glazed over look that meant his mind was miles away from there.
“Earth to Dan.” He snapped out of his daze to look at Suri, who was sitting next to him on the couch. Her belly was full and round now, but other than that, she hadn’t changed much. Maybe filled out her cheeks a little. Dan thought it was cute. “Where have you been, space walker?”
“Sorry. I keep thinking about tomorrow…”
“Big day for the future Ink Master?” Her smile was teasing, but it earned a genuine one from him. Things were messy between them now.
When Lori showed up, Suri told his brother about the baby. Mason pulled a Mason and started playing games, dumped his new girlfriend ( allegedly ) to be with ‘the mother of his child’. Suri didn’t exactly take him back, but she was letting him court her. Give it his best shot. They were kind of a thing now. It broke Dan’s heart, again. Lori was there to put him back together, even after he told her he slept with someone else ( he didn’t want to get Suri in trouble so he called her Rose ). Dan broke her heart too and he knew it was pretty unfair to Lori to go back to dating her while he was pretty sure he was in love with someone else, but he loved her and that could be enough again, right? Now that his brother took back whom he really wanted.
Mason was somewhere in the backyard outside, drinking and chatting away with his equally douchey friends, Tommy fucking Crane included, and Lori was running late. She was very dedicated to her job at the new clinic. He didn’t notice when Suri stepped in and took a seat next to him, but it couldn’t have been that long ago. Dan wished they weren’t sitting in Mason’s couch, where it all began, that one night she was dressed in his shirt and her black lace underwear. He wanted to go back in time so very badly, but that wasn’t how things worked. He didn’t know if he was thinking about the wrong woman when he slept with the right one, or the other way around. His head was all fucked up now. Just in time for his appearance in the new season of Ink Master.
“Dan?” She was looking at him with furrowed browns. Suri still worried about him. Sometimes Dan wished she hated him just so he knew he hadn’t imagined that whole thing between them.
“Sorry. I’m freaking out a little.”
“I can see that.” She kept looking at him. He thought she had very pretty eyes. It was the first thing that got him out of his head and kept him there in hours. “Are you gonna be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” He didn’t really believe that, but maybe she would.
Dan looked away for a second before he felt her hands on his face, turning his attention back towards her. It caught him completely off guard, but he never fought it. Suri leaned in to kiss him and all his worries washed away in an instant. She had always had that sort of effect on him, making the rest of the world seem small and unimportant when she touched him.
It wasn’t a long kiss, just enough to turn his head upside down. Back in place, really. One small kiss and he was reminded of how much it felt like they were meant to be together. “For good luck,” she said as if it was nothing. Dan knew it wasn’t because she knew he wanted her. They hadn’t kissed in weeks and now this? He wondered what it meant.
If she finally believed he wanted to be with her and not Lori. If she would take him back. If she still wanted him.
Dan wanted to kiss her again, but Mason’s voice filled the house, startling them. “Dan!” He stepped into the living room, tossing something over to him. Car keys. “Go get us more beer, yeah? Since you’re not doing anything.” Mason shifted his attention to Suri, curling his lips into a malicious smile and winking at her. It made him furious.
He tried not to grind his teeth. “Sure.” His brother was most likely about to flirt with Suri and he would rather do anything else than watch. Dan left the room quickly to get to Mason’s car. He didn’t even notice he was no longer nervous because all he could do then was think about her, that kiss and his brother taking his place next to her.
